A 4-year-old Lynnwood boy shot his mother Tuesday morning after accessing a loaded firearm, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

“At approximately 8:01 a.m., South County deputies responded to a report of an assault with a weapon in the 3100 block of 164th St. SW in Lynnwood,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a 4-year-old child had accessed a loaded firearm and accidentally shot his 42-year-old mother.”

The boy reportedly got the gun from his father, who was asleep on the couch at the time of the incident.

The mother was shot in the upper left arm and transported to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries. She is expected to survive.

The child sustained minor injuries. A second child, age 9, was also in the home. Both children were released to family members.
