Homicide suspect killed, officer injured in Yakima shooting

A suspect was killed and an officer was injured after a shooting in Yakima.
Yakima police officers were trying to approach a wanted suspect in a neighborhood on the east side of the city, just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The suspect was connected to a shooting that left a 33-year-old woman dead and a 13-year-old boy in the hospital with gunshot wounds, according to KIRO 7.
After a short vehicle chase, police were able to immobilize the suspect’s car at the intersection of East Walnut Avenue and 3rd Street, according to the Yakima Police Department.
During the encounter, gunfire erupted after a passenger in the car shot at officers, who then returned fire.
Officer hurt in Yakima shooting
The 36-year-old homicide suspect was killed, while the driver of the suspected car is in custody with non-life-threatening injuries.
A Yakima officer was also shot, but the injuries were not life-threatening. Medics transported the officer to the hospital, but the hospital later released the officer.
The Washington State Patrol’s Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit is investigating the shooting.
