A 3-alarm brush fire on the shoulder of I-5 in South Beacon Hill created heavy smoke and flames that spread to nearby homes and injured two people.

The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) said it received a call at around 3:53 p.m. Sunday.

More than 120 firefighters and support personnel responded to put out the fire and help residents evacuate.

Crews also went to the location where the fire started, which was downhill near I-5.

Firefighters blocked two lanes on I-5 northbound to contain the fire there.

Two people, a man and a woman, were treated at the scene before being taken to Harborview Medical Center.

Four houses on S. Myrtle Street were burned during the fire.

According to SFD, two homes sustained significant damage and were deemed uninhabitable. The two other homes sustained minor exterior damage.

An Alert Seattle and Wireless Emergency Alert were reportedly sent to the impacted area, encouraging residents to keep their windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering.

SFD said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
