More than 100 Meta employees, the parent company of Facebook, are being laid off in Washington.

The layoffs, 101 employees in total, affect roles in artificial intelligence (AI), including engineers and researchers.

According to The Puget Sound Business Journal, Meta is trimming down its AI staff after growing too fast. The company called it “organizational bloat.” In total, 600 people are being let go from Meta’s Superintelligence Labs.

Meta has approximately 8,000 employees in the local area. The layoffs are slated to begin Dec. 22.

Layoffs in the tech industry continue to escalate locally. Amazon, the Seattle-based retail giant, confirmed it is cutting approximately 14,000 corporate jobs, with employees receiving layoff notices starting Tuesday, Amazon announced.
