Some activists and media members would like to pretend this past weekend’s Seattle demonstration was simply a protest and not an anti-police riot. They’re all wrong.

I was there. I witnessed the arson, assaults, vandalism, and taunting.

Fifty-nine Seattle police officers don’t get injured at your typical protest. Arson, vandalism, and assault aren’t committed at protests. Hours of hurling incendiary devices at police isn’t in protest of anything. It’s being a … well, a word I can’t print at MyNorthwest, but I’ll let you fill in the blank with what you please.

Here are 69 photos I took during the Seattle anti-police riot. And for my written observations and analysis, click here.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — More than 7,500 people turned out to a high school in Vancouver, Washington and another 10,300 showed up at an arena in Seattle on Sunday for Bernie Sanders rallies, two of three taking place in the state that day.

The Vermont senator spent the past week in Arizona, and now is taking his campaign to Washington and other West Coast states that he hopes will help him make up ground after a solid delegate lead built up by Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

“Let us have a record-breaking turnout here in Washington,” Sanders said at KeyArena in Seattle, rallying supporters with many familiar themes.

Clinton has a lead of more than 300 delegates over Sanders from primaries and caucuses following a sweep of five states last Tuesday, so the Pacific Northwest has become important territory for him. Washington state, Alaska and Hawaii hold Democratic caucuses on Saturday, and Washington has the most delegates ultimately at stake with 101.

In Vancouver, Sanders declared to a packed gymnasium that the nation’s economic, campaign finance and criminal justice systems are “rigged” and criticized pharmaceutical companies for rising drug costs.

What riled up the young, rowdy crowd most were Sanders’ comments on health care and his support of gay marriage.

“Ten years ago, if somebody jumped up and said, ‘I think that gay marriage will be legal in 50 states in America in the year 2015,’ the person next to them would’ve said ‘You are nuts, what are you smoking?'” Sanders said.

In Seattle, Sanders applauded the city’s move to incrementally phase in a $15-an-hour minimum wage by 2017 that took effect in April 2015.

Lines outside the stadium were huge before the event, and according to Seattle officials, 5,500 people remained outside during Sanders’ speech and another 1,500 left when they didn’t make it into the stadium. Sanders addressed the overflow crowd outside before his official remarks. Some in line said they had arrived at around 10:30 a.m. for the rally that began around 5:40 p.m.

Inside the arena, Sanders pledged to make it easier for people to vote. He elicited huge roars when addressing a number of issues such as racial justice, his intent to implement universal health care and fight climate change.

“In my view we have a moral responsibility to leave this planet to our children and grandchildren in a way that is healthy and habitable,” said.

Washington is reliably Democratic when it comes to presidential elections. It hasn’t gone for a Republican candidate since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

Vancouver, which has a population of 167,000, has been historically overlooked during presidential campaigns.

Tacoma cops shot and killed a woman trying to run them over with her car, all while allegedly harboring an armed criminal with two outstanding warrants, so naturally there was a protest against the cops.

A Tacoma cop shot and killed a woman trying to run him and his partner over with a stolen car, all while allegedly harboring an armed criminal with two outstanding warrants, so naturally there was a protest against the cops.

Donning ridiculous signs like “Stop police terror!” and “Stop murder by police,” some 200-protesters near Route 509 on their way to downtown Tacoma U.S. Courthouse.
According to the <a href="http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/local/article66457942.html" =new target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tacoma News Tribune, cops were on the lookout for Kenneth Wright Jr., a homeless man with outstanding warrants for first-degree robbery, drug possession, and illegally possessing a firearm. Two Tacoma PD officers spotted him in the passenger seat of a car being driven by Jacqueline Salyers.

As the officers approached the car, she allegedly hit the gas pedal to try to run them over with her car. Because officers prefer not to be run over by a speeding car, one officer fired his weapon at her. She was hit with one bullet, and Wright, carrying a rifle, ran away.

Officers called paramedics but she died on the scene.
Now, protesters are angry, insisting these officers are murderers.

While the investigation is ongoing, Tacoma PD spokeswoman Loretta Cool told the Tribune that “All indications at this time are that the officer acted when he felt his life was endangered.”

Let’s not allow the facts to get in the way of a good anti-cop protest. Can we stop pretending that these protesters are legitimate in their concerns when we have situations like this?

Oftentimes, we’ll hear excuses that historically, certain communities have become victims of overzealous and corrupt cops; we shouldn’t fault a “victim’s” family member who is grieving and looking for anyone to blame to cope with something they can’t emotionally handle.

There is no doubt that, historically, we certainly have seen rampant abuse by cops acting illegally in this country (and targeting communities unjustly) and that it is obviously difficult to cope with a family member being shot, this shouldn’t excuse this sorry and disgusting protest. These people seem hell-bent on going after cops, not keeping them accountable. How could they? They have a disturbing lack of regard for facts and they don’t seem capable of looking at an incident without an incredibly anti-cop bias.

Unfortunately, we’re not really allowed to call these protesters out for what they are: ignorant, anti-cop extremists. If you do, you’re called racist and whatever other lame insult the activist bullies can muster up in their attempt to silence you. They’ll do it to me for this piece.

But what we can’t forget is every single time we get an outrageous protest like this, you hurt your own cause because when actual police abuse happens, you’ll end up turning to a protest-fatigued public who won’t pay attention to your message.

A group of protesters demonstrating the death of Che Taylor made their voice heard.

The demonstration began outside police headquarters.

Police officers rode alongside the group. Protesters marched to Westlake Center, creating delays on the express lanes and other traffic blockages.

At least one demonstrator said not all officers are looking for violence, but some are, and that needs to change, <a href="http://www.kiro7.com/news/rally-outside-spd-headquarters-will-protest-police-shooting/114595440" =new target="_blank" rel="noopener">KIRO 7 reports.

Taylor was <a href="/11/2918550/Video-Seattle-police-officers-shoot-armed-felon"target=new>shot and killed by Seattle police on Sunday. Police say he reached for a gun. Because he was a felon, he was prohibited from possessing a gun.

On Tuesday night, the Associated Press identified the two officers who fired their weapons were identified Tuesday as Michael Spaulding and Scott Miller.

Did you see that viral picture of the Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain?

Did you see that viral picture of the Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain? Hundreds of journalists wearing virtual reality headsets, completely oblivious as Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, the interview they’d all kill for, brushes past unnoticed.

Remember the early 3-D goggles? Big, crude, clunky. You felt like an idiot wearing them. And when you saw someone else wearing them you realized that not only do you feel like an idiot, you look like an idiot.

Related: Can you really trust your iPhone?

Well, the new 3-D will be lighter and thoroughly absorbing. It will eventually include touch, acceleration, and smell. And while it will be used for serious applications, the big money will be in immersive experiences in fantasy universes.

I suppose you could argue that at least it’s safer than marijuana. But you could also argue it’s much more dangerous. Because unlike marijuana, you’re not just surrendering yourself to the random eruptions of your own brain, you’re surrendering to sensory manipulations from the mind of a stranger.

It’s a whole new type of drug &#8211 just as addictive but protected by the first amendment. Plus, no smuggling is necessary. And unlike ordinary drugs, this is a drug that, in the wrong hands, could plant the same new reality in millions of minds.

As that viral snapshot from Barcelona demonstrates, the headsets still make people look like idiots, but only until the last guy watching from the outside finally puts on his headset.

At which point it will no longer matter.

The first flight of the Boeing 737 MAX is scheduled between 9-10 a.m. today.

The first Boeing 737 MAX took off just after 9:40 a.m on Friday.

The first MAX 8 was unveiled in Renton early in December.

“Today marks another in a long series of milestones that our team has achieved on time, per plan, together,” Keith Leverkuhn, vice president and general manager of 737 MAX Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said at the time. “With the rollout of the new 737 MAX – the first new airplane of Boeing’s second century – our team is upholding an incredible legacy while taking the 737 to the next level of performance.”

The single-aisle airplane will use 20 percent less fuel than the first Next-Generation 737s, and the lowest operating costs. It is the first in Boeing’s newest line of airplanes to begin production.

I avoid trying to reflect on this day. But there's no avoiding it this year.

I avoid trying to reflect on this day. But there’s no avoiding it this year.

The motorcade sequence, the cameras panning to the Texas Book Depository. The words themselves – “Book Depository” “Zapruder” “Oswald” “Ruby” – they’re words that create a darkness when I hear them.

I was 11 when JFK was shot; not old enough to understand it, but old enough to witness what horror looks like.

Like most kids, I was at school. And my teacher, who was a stern, red-headed woman, was suddenly running across the room in tears saying “they killed him, they killed him.” I had never witnessed an adult cry and certainly not the helpless cry I heard that day.

My only memory after that is all of us sitting in front of the TV for hours. Just watching.

As Walter Cronkite reported, “There is weeping on the streets.”

Over the years, I’ve done interviews about the conspiracy claims, but I don’t think about conspiracies or how history might have been different. What I think of when I think of the JFK assassination is being in that classroom and having it shoved in my face that this is a world where things can disappear in an instant. Where people you think are bigger than life can be suddenly gone.
And that you can’t dwell on it, but you might as well be prepared for it because that’s the way it is.

Sweat, grit, and talent converged on the gym floor at Shorecrest High School Wednesday night for The Clash on the Court.

Dori and Governor Inslee and their all-star basketball teams went head to head for two 15 minute halves.

710 ESPN Seattle’s Groz and KIRO Radio’s Dave Ross called the game and fans eager to see a mix of talk show hosts, local athletes, coaches, politicians, and a reporter cheered them on!

Dori’s team lost by one lousy point: 58-57.

Then it was time for Dori to avenge the loss in a one-on-one game against the governor. Dori had an age advantage, but the governor is easily six inches taller. Dori took the win: 20-12.

What a night! And all to benefit Food Lifeline and Sports in Schools.

An overweight Little Red Riding Hood and an alcoholic Cinderella. A Vancouver, B.C. conceptual photographer envisions what happens to princesses in reality.

See photos of the ‘Fallen Princesses’

Some day my prince will come. Some day we’ll meet again and away to his castle we’ll go to be happy forever I know.

The first storybook I read as a little girl was Cinderella. I believed I was Lindarella and someday a prince would find me working hard on the farm, take me away to a big city, and we’d live happily ever after.

Turns out, I’m not a princess.

Generations of little girls grow up believing in fairy tales.

A Vancouver, B.C. conceptual photographer envisions what happens to Disney princesses in reality for her fascinating photography series “Fallen Princesses.”

Snow White is dealing with an unhappy marriage. Cinderella is a lonely alcoholic. Rapunzel lost her golden hair during chemotherapy for cancer treatment.

Poor Pocahontas watches television alone surrounded only by dozens of cats while Belle is getting plastic surgery.

Jasmine is in the middle of a war zone, still looking fabulous in her purple camouflage clothing.

Little Red Riding Hood has become overweight as she walks through the woods sipping a large sugary drink and carrying a basket of fast food.

<a href="http://dinagoldstein.com" =_blank target="_blank" rel="noopener">Photographer Dina Goldstein grew up in Tel Aviv, Israel and wasn’t exposed to Disney’s version of how life should be for young women. Instead, she read the original Grimm stories which have more dark and gruesome themes.

When she moved to Canada and had her own daughter she began to explore some of Disney’s twists on classic fairy tales.

They all seemed to have the same theme. A sweet, innocent girl with a pure heart finds herself trapped in a life with an overbearing female villain. Fortunately, a man rescues the young woman and she becomes a princess.

A few of the later princesses – Jasmine and Mulan – were tougher. But, generally the Disney way to happiness is with a handsome, though slightly inept at first, prince.

Goldstein wondered what those princesses would be like when confronted with real-world issues. They’d probably be, like the rest of us are.

Her collection has already been published in several books and opens in Vancouver’s Buschlen Mowatt Gallery in October.

She’s hoping the photos will provoke discussions about what “happily ever after” means and the disservice we do to girls when we encourage Disney’s version of reality.

“By placing iconic characters such as Little Red Riding Hood or Snow White in modern situations, the series became a commentary on such everyday scourges as poverty, obesity, cancer and pollution,” Goldstein says.

(AP) LONDON —

It’s a boy!

Prince William’s wife, Kate, has given birth to a prince who is now third in line to the British throne.

The child was born Monday afternoon, after many Britons woke up to the news that Kate, also known as the Duchess of Cambridge, had gone into labor with the couple’s first child.

The royal birth announcement said the boy was born at 4:24 p.m. weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces. William was present for the birth, the statement said. The announcement did not include a name for the future monarch, though one is expected to be revealed in the coming days.

“Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight,” it said. William also issued a brief statement, saying “we could not be happier.”

Cries of joy erupted from the waiting crowd amassed near Buckingham Palace as the news came through, and hundreds of onlookers – some of whom had camped outside for hours – crushed against the palace’s fences to catch a glimpse of the bulletin formally announcing the birth placed outside the palace’s forecourt.

“It’s a crazy atmosphere, everyone is getting very excited,” said Andrew Aitchison, 47, outside the palace. “It’s great to be part of history, to say we were here and saw it all happen.”

William’s father, Charles, and his wife, Camilla, spoke of their joy and pride in becoming grandparents for the first time.

“It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy,” Prince Charles said in a statement. “Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.”

It could be some time before the baby’s name is made public. When William was born, a week passed before his name was announced. Charles’s name remained a mystery for an entire month.

The royal birth at central London’s St. Mary’s Hospital recalled that of the baby’s father, William, in 1982, at the same hospital. Many remember the moment when he was carried out in his mother Princess Diana’s arms with proud father Prince Charles at their side.

William and Kate’s son is expected to follow Charles and William to the throne.

The baby’s gender had been of particular interest because the prospect of Kate’s pregnancy had prompted a change to laws of succession to ensure that a daughter would not be passed over for the crown by a younger brother.

No one can tell what political and personal changes the intervening years will bring, but the baby can be expected to become the head of state of 16 countries, including Britain, Australia and Canada. The child will also eventually become Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

The little prince represents a living link to Britain’s imperial history – the infant is the great-great-great-great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria, who ruled at the peak of British power.

The couple waited, however, until William was nearly finished with his military work as a search and rescue helicopter pilot based at an air base in a remote island off the coast of Wales.

That allowed Kate to ease into royal life, and to become more comfortable in the spotlight, before becoming a parent. It also allowed her to play a supporting role during Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations last summer.

The first months of her pregnancy were not easy, and she was hospitalized in early December with acute morning sickness that left her weak and dehydrated. She seemed to recover her stamina fairly quickly and made a series of public appearances until the final weeks before giving birth, drawing praise for her poise and good cheer.

The royal couple and their newborn are expected to spend much of their time in the coming years in renovated quarters at Kensington Palace, where William and Harry also spent much of their childhood.

Royal officials say Kate and William will try to give their child as normal an upbringing as possible. That may be challenging in an age when the British royals are treated as major world celebrities.

A fire believed caused by illegal fireworks has destroyed 14 boats at a storage facility on Northlake Way in Seattle.

Illegal fireworks are being blamed for a massive fire that destroyed 14 boats and damaged several others at a boat storage facility on the north shore of Lake Union.

Firefighters found 14 boats engulfed in flames when they arrived at the fire at Lake Union Skylaunch Marina shortly after 10 p.m. on Thursday.

“This spread quickly but with heroic effort of Seattle Boat Company staff, we have prevented a much worse potential circumstance,” said Alan Bohling, CEO, Seattle Boat Company. “We are thankful for an outstanding team who reacted professionally and quickly in this extraordinary circumstance.”

There were no reports of injuries. Damage is estimated at $1.5 million.

Authorities say the fire was under control in about 10 minutes. The cause is under investigation, but Bohling said in a news release that “we believe that an errant firework from the hillside above landed inside a Skylaunch vessel.”

Boeing is taking on rival Airbus on the French manufacturer’s home turf, and it’s competing for billions of dollars worth of airplanes and thousands of jobs in the Puget Sound.

Airbus opened the air show with a big splash on Friday debuting the A350, the long-awaited and much-delayed rival to Boeing’s 777 and 787. It wowed the crowds in Toulouse, France, as it flew for the first time.

But Boeing made a big splash early in the show too. It officially started talking about the third version of the 787 Dreamliner, the 10X. GE Capital Services committed to buying ten 10X’s on Monday. That’s the first commitment for the largest version of the Dreamliner, which has yet to officially launch as a program.

Speaking on CNBC from Paris, Boeing CEO Jim McNerney said the wide-bodies are expected to steal the show this week.

“I think there’s going to be a lot of wide-body action here,” he said. “Last year was Neo’s and MAX’s. This year is going to be wide-bodies.”

Boeing also inked some deals on the first day of the air show, including a $2.8 billion deal for nine 777’s from Qatar Airways on Monday, and Japan’s small carrier Skymark Airlines signed on to replace its fleet of 30 737’s with the new 737 MAX. It is the first Japanese carrier to sign on with the MAX.

While Airbus is debuting its new semi-composite A350, McNerney says Boeing is way ahead of its rival in dealing with the issues of putting a new plane with new technology into service.

“All the pain and suffering from the 787, all those technologies are moving to the 777 and moving to the next generation derivatives of the 787, and so we’re now maturing this lead,” he said. “We are now reaping the benefits. We’re harvesting the hard-fought gains of the 787 experience, and it’s going to serve us well over the next two decades.”

Boeing Vice President of Marketing Randy Tinseth also told KIRO Radio that a major announcement on the official launch of the 787-10X could be made in the next day or two, and that means the discussion of where the plane will be built can officially heat up.

Now that Boeing has announced its plans for the 787-10X, the question of where it will be built can now be asked.

The Seattle Times reports the 15 percent larger airplane might be too big to be built in Everett. Boeing already plans to build the fuselage for the plane in South Carolina, but it might be too big to fit in the Dreamlifter for a trip to Everett for final assembly.

Tinseth said no decision on assembly has been made.

“When we look at it, we have an extremely flexible production system,” he said. “We have options available to us, and we’ll make a decision on where it’s going to be built at the right time.”

A procession of hundreds of police cars traveled down Interstate 5 from the Smokey Point rest area to the public memorial service at Comcast Arena in Everett for Washington State Patrol Trooper Sean O’Connell.

The 16-year patrol veteran died in a collision with a truck while directing traffic detoured around the collapsed Interstate 5 Skagit River bridge.

The procession to Comcast Arena in Everett began at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Smokey Point rest area near 188th St. The public memorial service begins at 1 p.m. in Everett.

O’Connell’s brother Francis will speak at the memorial. He tells KING 5 his brother was much more than a Washington State Patrol Trooper.

“He was very personable, very engaging, very compassionate, loved to talk to people. His greatest strength was being able to open up a conversation with somebody who was a complete stranger and connecting with them.”

KIRO Radio’s Brandi Kruse will be reporting live from Comcast Arena in Everett. Check back here and listen to KIRO Radio for updates.

For those that would like to honor O’Connell’s memory with a monetary donation, his family suggests donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Washington State Patrol Memorial Foundation.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
