Seattle police chief discussed the department's staffing surge, potential drone use, and the CARE team.

The Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) current workforce includes 1,200 sworn officers and 631 civilian employees, according to the city’s website. The department rebounded from a low point in April 2024, when it had just 424 active officers — the smallest force since at least 1957.

SPD hiring back on track

SPD Chief Shon Barnes said the department is on pace to hire its 150th officer in the next couple of days.

“The people want to come here and work. They want to come here and be a part of what we have going on in the Seattle Police Department,” Barnes told “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio.

He added that the department is not losing as many officers to other agencies, but instead, officers are retiring.

“We’re not seeing as many. I think we’ll definitely see a higher net. My goal is a net of 100 for this year. Last year, we had a net of one. So if you do the percentage markup, that’s better,” Barnes shared.

Police drones in Seattle next?

Moving on to the topic of drones, as the Redmond Police Department currently uses the technology to nab suspects, Barnes sees the need for the crafty devices in Seattle.

“With FIFA coming up, we’ll have drone detection systems up, obviously, and some of our partners, especially those that are assigned to FIFA, federal partners, will have drones that are up,” he explained. “And it’s just about keeping people safe, being able to see what that call is or what it is not.”

However, he did acknowledge that residents could have privacy concerns.

“Every city has a different tolerance for technology, and so we have to see what the tolerance for technology here is in Seattle,” he said.

Seattle police chief makes case for CARE team

As for responding to a crime, Seattle is expanding its Community Assisted Response and Engagement (CARE) team. The CARE Department is Seattle’s third branch of public safety and operates the 911 Communications Center and the Community Crisis Responder (CCR) Team, according to the city’s website.

However, critics worry the CARE team may be ill-equipped to handle dangerous 911 calls.

Barnes noted that when someone calls the 911 center, which is no longer operated by police, the responders go through a list of questions to assess the situation. One of those questions is if there are any dangerous weapons involved. If the answer is no, then the CARE team will be dispatched.

“For most calls, you go to them, it could be nothing, and then you’re like, ‘Why am I here?’, CARE team could help. Or you could go to calls and it comes out as nothing, and then it turns quickly, but they all have the capability to give us a call, or get on the radio, or not intervene at all if they think it’s going to be dangerous,” Barnes explained.

Join us as a Seattle resident attempts the world's deepest marathon for a Guinness World Record today.

A Seattle local is participating in a Guinness World Record today for the world’s deepest marathon.

Chris-King Sidney will be part of a group of 60 others running more than 3,675 feet below sea level — more than twice the length of the Empire State Building — in the Garpenberg Zinc Mine in Sweden on October 25.

The underground challenge will be Chris’ first marathon, begging the question: why this one?

“Well, I’ve never done one before. I’ve done a half before. I used to run cross country when I was in high school, and I figured, kind of bit of a bucket list thing. Why not?” Chris shared on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio. “Do one, and this will be one and done. I don’t plan on doing another one. And if I’m going to do one, I might as well do something that’s a little bit crazy.”

He added that a large part of the event is to raise money for charity and spread awareness around mine safety. Chris said while mining has gotten a bad safety reputation, it’s actually an “incredibly safe profession.”

“A bit of what we’re trying to do here is to raise awareness around the safety of mining and the importance of mining for just our global economy and energy transition, and where it’s going,” he shared.

During the record attempt, the group will face temperatures of up to 86 degrees, will be in total silence, and will only have their head torch for light.

“We have headlamps that are affixed to the top of our helmets. We have high viz reflective shirts and socks, and everything so that we can be seen. We have transponders on our helmets, should something ever happen. And at the beginning of the run, there will be a sort of a staging area where there will be some lamps that are set up so that you can see. And there’s a turnaround point, because it’s not that we’re doing 26 miles all in one direction. It’s about a four-kilometer loop,” Chris explained.

Explore Jake's insights on unpermitted food vendors shut down for health violations outside Lumen Field.

More than a dozen unpermitted food vendors were shut down outside Lumen Field, many of which were operating without sufficient refrigeration or handwashing, KING 5 reported Wednesday.

KIRO host Jake Skorheim shared his own experience with a food vendor outside the stadium.

“My son and I went to a Mariners game, like, a month and a half ago, and we walked right by one, and I see this guy, he’s like, flinging up hot dogs. He’s pulling hot dogs out of a backpack, shoving them on the grill. And I’m thinking to myself, there’s just no way that this is a safe way to store food,” Jake said on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio.

According to KING 5, there has been a surge in illegal food carts, with King County shutting down 27 carts in 2023, but then shutting down 111 in 2024 — a 300% spike.

“They’re not licensed, they’re not legal, they’re not healthy,” KIRO host Spike O’Neill remarked.

Greta Niehaus recalls a crucial hit near her father's statue during a memorable Mariners game, celebrating Dave Niehaus' legacy.

During the Seattle Mariners’ chaotic 15-inning game, Greta Niehaus found comfort sitting near the statue of her father, Hall of Fame broadcaster Dave Niehaus.

“It just came over me. It was almost just like I was being led,” Greta said on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio. “I was pacing back and forth, like everyone watching, but also just so anxious and nail biting. And I went out in the hallway, and I was pacing up and down. And they have these beautiful photos of old ball players lined in the hallway. And I was touching them all and saying, ‘Come on, need all you guys here.’ And then I just saw the sign that said stairs, and so I just felt drawn to go to the statue, and I just went straight down, kept walking instead of turning around and pacing backwards, and went down the stairs to the 100 level.”

Greta said she wiggled her way through the crowd, to her dad’s statue. When she got there, something magical happened.

“I just felt this pull, this urge to be there, and it was crazy, because as soon as I sat down, I just grabbed on to him, and that’s when it happened — that’s when Polanco did it, that exact moment — and I just was so happy, like everybody just jumping and hugging all these people,” she shared.

Greta said two ladies pulled her aside and showed her a photo they had taken of her with the statue.

“I said, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s so special. Would you mind sharing that with me?’ Because it just meant so much and and they went on to tell me a little bit about their stories and how they grew up watching the Mariners and with their dads,” she shared. “And one of them had lost her dad a couple years ago, and just this special connection, that baseball brings to people, it brings us together.”

Explore Spike's defense of the 1% property tax cap affecting Edmonds and its impact on local homeowners.

In 2007, the Washington legislature voted to reinstate a 1% annual cap on property tax increases for cities and counties, which Representative Ross Hunter viewed as “the single worst vote” he made in his career. Years later, Hunter is advocating for the passage of Proposition 1, which would allow cities and counties to go beyond the 1% cap on property taxes.

As a resident near Edmonds, KIRO host Spike O’Neill noted his frustration with potentially removing the 1% property tax cap on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio, further stating that the initiative was created with the thought of tax raises through other avenues.

“It sucks. I’m glad [Hunter] is doing so well, I’m glad he can afford another 5% of his home’s value coming out of his pocket, but respectfully, you should walk a mile in my shoes,” Spike said. “I think they voted to cap it at 1% knowing some foresight that other things are also going to be raised. You can’t come at them from every side. You can’t dip your hand in every pocket. They should keep the cap.”

“It seems like he’s not speaking for the average person. The average person is sick of property taxes,” KIRO host Jake Skorheim said. “I think [Hunter] is way off, which is why I’m glad he’s not in the office anymore.”

Discover the implications of Washington State Ferries' first out-of-state shipyard contract in 50 years for new vessel construction.

Washington has decided to contract with an out-of-state shipyard for the first time in 50 years to build new Washington State Ferries (WSF) vessels.

Reporter Tom Banse outlined the arrangement in an article for The Washington State Standard and discussed it on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio, calling the deal “interesting.”

“The deal was interesting from the get-go, because there were competing values, of spending our tax dollars locally or getting more for our buck by going to a Florida shipyard,” Banse said.

He explained that state officials announced in the summer that Washington would contract with Eastern Shipbuilding, a shipyard in the Florida Panhandle, for three new hybrid electric ferries.

“My colleague and I were interested to actually look at the contract and read it, once that was signed, and that only recently was made public. And this interesting arrangement became even more interesting because, on top of the issue of taxpayer savings versus local jobs, there is now the issue of time versus money. And Eastern Shipbuilding got a few changes to the standard template of the contract that Washington State Ferries first put forward for all the bidders nationwide, and one of them is an extra year to deliver each of those three new ferries,” Banse continued.

He added that he only found out about the extra time because he noticed a change in the contract.

Banse explained that there was a local bidder in the beginning, Nicholas Brothers, based on Whidbey Island. Nicholas Brothers said it could deliver the first ferry in 2029, the second one in 2030, and the third one in 2031 — but they bid over $1 billion for three new ferries.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Shipbuilding bid was $714 million.

“So the state leaders, all the way up to Governor Ferguson, decided, ‘As much as we’d like to keep our dollars at home and grow the shipbuilding capacity and know-how in our state, we just can’t afford it,” Banse said.

Discover how Jeremy Bellwood celebrated the Mariners by flying his plane and tracing a Trident pattern in the Seattle sky.

A Seattle Mariners superfan, Jeremy Bellwood, expressed his love for the team in a unique way by flying his plane above downtown Seattle and tracing the Mariners’ trident into the sky.

The longtime season ticket holder and pilot for 13 years told “The Jake and Spike Show” how he used Google Earth to map out his route to create a Mariners trident above Seattle.

“I’ve actually seen other planes that have done these line art drawings using a single, continuous line,” Bellwood said. “I always thought it’d be cool to do something, but never really had an idea of what it was that I wanted to do, until the Mariners clinched the division and we were headed to the playoffs.”

Bellwood built the plane himself back in 2017, and after considering various Mariners logos, he landed on a trident to be traced directly above T-Mobile Park ahead of Game 3.

“I was looking through all the logos of the Mariners, and I was trying to play around with a big S with the compass in the middle, but that’d be too challenging,” Bellwood said. “I ended up on the Trident, which works great because Trident stuff has kind of been the motto of the season, and now with ‘Seize the Moment,’ I mean, what better way to celebrate the team and what they’ve done.”

M's owner and Microsoft exec support Bruce Harrell's campaign in recent Seattle Mariners playoff ad during critical game.

Campaign advertisements for Bruce Harrell and Katie Wilson, both vying to be the mayor of Seattle, were broadcast during one of the Mariners’ playoff games on Monday.

Funding for the ad placement of Mayor Harrell’s commercial came from some of Seattle’s biggest names, including Mariners majority owner John Stanton, Tod Leiweke, part-owner of the Kraken, and Brad Smith, the vice chair and president of Microsoft.

“These are big names. There’s a reason why these folks want Mayor Bruce Harrell to keep his job,” KIRO host Jake Skorheim said on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio. “They’re not necessarily saying they think he’s the best mayor in the history of the town, or even the best option. But of these candidates, they seem to think Harrell is the better option than Katie.”

“It’s a better option for their particular business interests,” KIRO host Spike O’Neill responded. “That’s what the election cycles are all about. Giving to the candidate who’s going to help your business, and your employees do better.”

Mayoral race heats up

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and mayoral candidate Katie Wilson have participated in numerous debates leading up to the general election, discussing various Seattle-based topics.

Wilson earned nearly 51% of the vote in the August primary, compared to Harrell’s 43%.

“We need a mayor’s office that is responsive and effective, and right now we are failing,” Wilson said during an opening statement of an Oct. 3 debate. “We cannot have another four years when the rates of unsheltered homelessness go up and up and up. I cannot keep watching families like mine move out of the city because they cannot afford to live here … I know that together we can build a city that we can all believe in.”

Harrell, who served on the Seattle City Council from 2008 to 2020 before becoming mayor, has been exhibiting his experience as both a lawmaker and a Seattle native, having grown up and attended school in the city before assuming a leadership role.

“I need four more years to right the ship, and we’ve laid the foundation for it,” Harrell said.

It’s been a contentious race, marked by numerous allegations and controversies between the two. Harrell and his campaign team claimed that Harrell’s skin was edited to a different color in a photo posted by Common Power, which Kate Wilson and her campaign team later promoted.

Wilson was also accused of falsifying an endorsement from Claude Burfect, a prominent civil rights activist who was the first vice president of the Seattle-King County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Earlier this year, former Seattle Deputy Mayor Monisha Harrell accused Mayor Bruce Harrell of sexism and running a toxic office where sexism was the apparent norm. Monisha is the mayor’s niece.

Crystal Mountain and Stevens Pass prepare for an exciting ski season as Washington's mountains see early snowfall.

As Washington sees its first notable mountain snowfall, Crystal Mountain Resort is projected to open on Nov. 28, while Stevens Pass’ opening date is scheduled for Dec. 5, The Seattle Times reported.

KIRO host Spike O’Neill shared what it was like for him to ski for the first time at 31 years old.

“Horrifying, and then the most gratifying and invigorating feeling of being able to control yourself rolling down a hill. It’s an amazing feeling everybody should experience at some point in time,” he said on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio. “And we’re so blessed here in the Northwest, when we get snow, and we’re getting snow pretty regularly.”

Spike highlighted that people don’t have to travel very far out of the Seattle area to ski.

“You’re an hour out of town. Almost any direction you can get water skiing and snow skiing in the same day, and that’s the only place in the world you can do that,” he said.

KIRO host Jake Skorheim pointed out the various options for skiing in the area.

“We have Snoqualmie, which is great. If you’re out on Highway 2, you can head out to Stevens Pass. There’s Crystal Mountain over on the east side, there’s Baker,” he said.

Looking at the forecast, Jake noted that a weak La Niña is expected for winter, which typically brings cooler, wetter, and snowier conditions.

In a touching moment, Greta Niehaus honors her father after the Mariners' thrilling 15-inning win.

In the middle of all the chaos of the Seattle Mariners’ 15-inning victory on Friday, the daughter of Hall of Fame broadcaster Dave Niehaus, Greta, chose to sit with her father amid the late-inning hysteria.

An article written by Mike Gastineau summarized the touching moment Greta shared with her late father’s statue. Mike spoke on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio to reveal the background of how this amazing story came to fruition.

“It’s an amazing story. Greta started the game in her seat, ended up in the owner’s suite for a while, but said she was driving herself crazy. She’s pacing and nervous,” Mike said. “Finally, she said that in the 15th inning, she felt something call her to go to [Dave’s statue].”

Greta Niehaus sits with father’s statue as Mariners win in extra innings

Mike explained that Greta often visits her father’s statue, located beyond center field of T-Mobile Park, but this moment was one of a kind.

“She’s been to the statue lots of times, but she’d never gone during a game,” Mike said. “The way the statue is built, there’s a little chair next to Dave where you can sit next to him and get your picture taken. Nobody sits there and watches the game, but Greta comes over in the 15th inning and works her way through the crowd and sits down.”

Greta’s feeling that she needed to spend this historic moment with her father proved to be the correct instinct, as Jorge Polanco lined a single into right to walk off the Tigers and send the Mariners to their first Championship Series appearance since 2001.

“Greta works her arm through the arm of the statue, she’s engaged, and holding on to her dad. Then the next pitch is Rizzs going crazy,” Mike said. “It is a beautiful, serendipitous moment that was captured forever.”

Mike praised Dave’s career as a Mariners broadcaster for 34 seasons, further claiming that Dave was instrumental in helping develop his career.

“Anytime I can do anything to further the knowledge, love, and appreciation of Dave Niehaus, I will do it because I knew Dave very well, and he was so influential to me, and so kind. He helped guide me in my career and was a great broadcaster,” Mike said. “[The story] is a neat thing to happen in the middle of this beautiful baseball run that we’re all enjoying.”

The Reptile Zoo in Monroe reverses its closure plans and reopens this November after nearly 30 years of captivating visitors.

The Reptile Zoo in Monroe was set to close this fall after nearly 30 years—but not anymore.

Reptile Zoo owner Isaac Peterson told “The Jake and Spike Show” the zoo will remain open after all, with ticket sales nearly tripling.

“We’ve been really busy, and we’re just going to try one more time to keep the zoo going. We’re gonna shut down for about four weeks, open back up in mid-November,” he said.

Isaac previously told “Jake and Spike” that COVID and inflation were difficult for his business, but after cutting down his staff, he’s optimistic about the future.

“We just appreciate the public for keeping us going. There was nothing that I did. We were just really busy, and it worked out,” Isaac said.

Last time, Isaac showed off his friend Linguine, a 10-foot, 40-pound, albino Burmese python. This time, he brought a little 23-year-old alligator named Boots.

“The main thing I gotta mention is, so like other reptiles, they don’t have a bladder, so you might get peed on,” Isaac warned.

Spike O'Neill uncovers the chilling details of a potential ghost presence within his home and how he is grateful for the company of his ghost.

In Washington, there are no laws requiring home sellers to report if there has been a death inside a home at the point of sale. Other states, such as New Jersey, require home sellers to report if there have been any ghost sightings in the house for sale.

Jake Skorheim and Spike O’Neill, co-hosts of “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio, uncovered Spike’s chilling details of a potential ghost presence within his home and how he is grateful for the company of his ghost.

“Why do you think your house is haunted?” Jake asked.

“There are little things that happen around the house. I’d close doors, and they’d be open again. I’ll walk into a room sometimes, and it’s just colder than the rest of the house,” Spike said. “I have emptied a cabinet looking for a spice, put it all back inside, walk away, and come back 20 minutes later, and the spice is just sitting by itself on the counter.
King County Regional Homeless Authority announced there were 16,886 homeless people in the county and has spent more than $2 billion to fix the homeless crisis.

In April, the King County Regional Homeless Authority announced there were 16,886 homeless people in the county, a 26% increase from 2023, and the county has spent more than $2 billion in an attempt to fix the homeless crisis, according to The Seattle Times.

KIRO host Jake Skorheim questioned the idea of allocating funds towards King County’s homeless crisis in general, claiming the issue has worsened despite billions of dollars being spent on it.

“Where could that money have been spent better? It’s certainly not fixing the homeless crisis,” Jake said. “All this money, and we’ve seen not only no improvements, but we’ve seen a decrease in available services for people, and an increased number of homeless on the streets. I would rather they just leave it alone and not spend $1 than to spend $2 billion and see it grow by 26%”

"I had no idea until we heard it in the media," Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus said regarding Kevin Coe's, also known as the "South Hill rapist," release.

Kevin Coe, the man known as Spokane’s “South Hill Rapist,” was released from state custody after more than four decades behind bars and in civil commitment.

Coe, 78, registered as a Level 3 sex offender, is now at a home on 15th Street S.E. in Auburn, after plans to place him in Federal Way received pushback. According to the City of Auburn, leadership had no prior knowledge or communication that Coe would be moving into a home in the area.

“I had no idea until we heard it in the media,” Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus said on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio. “They were calling, asking us how we felt about Kevin Coe’s relocation to Auburn, and we were surprised. We had no idea that he had been released to an Auburn adult family home.”

Coe, 78, was arrested in 1981 and initially convicted on four counts of first-degree rape. Those convictions were partially overturned due to the use of hypnosis on victims, which raised concerns about the reliability of their testimony. A second trial in 1985 resulted in three convictions, but two were later overturned by the state Supreme Court, leaving only one conviction intact.

Coe is still linked to at least 43 rapes in the Spokane area between 1978 and 1981. His alleged victims were between 15 and 51 years old.

“What did Federal Way do when they heard this that allowed them to say no and forced Coe’s removal from their community?” KIRO host Spike O’Neill asked.

“My understanding is that they were notified well in advance, and the media was aware. I believe that there were media and outraged residents at the location when Kevin Coe was going to be placed at the adult family home, so they had a backup plan to relocate him to Auburn,” Backus answered. “So that’s what they did. And we had, again, no notice. Had we had notice? We would have had people there as well, so that he had to just continue to move on.

“I’m not wishing him on any other community,” Backus added. “This is not a situation that any community deserves to find themselves in.”

Clashing reports on Coe’s health

Coe was in custody for more than four decades, but, due to his advanced age and deteriorating health, multiple state psychologists believe he is no longer a threat to commit predatory acts of sexual violence, leading to his unconditional release. Coe was bound to a wheelchair when he was released and transported to Auburn.

“When our police officers went up to determine if he was actually residing there, he was not in a wheelchair,” Backus said. “So when we’re hearing that he has been that he’s resigned to a wheelchair, I don’t know that that’s the case.”

Coe is currently residing in a licensed family care facility in Auburn.

“The laws need to be changed, and I commit right now that I will be in front of the state legislature this year, making changes or asking for changes, because nobody wants this in their community,” Backus said. “Nobody deserves this. There has to be a better way. The state has to find a better way to do this.”

A Mariners fan ate dirt as a way to change the mojo for the Seattle Mariners, and it ended up working.

KIRO host Spike O’Neill thought: Why not give it a try?

“The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio asked the Mariners if they could have some dirt from the field.

“We asked for permission to go up and scoop some dirt out of the infield. And the Mariners were like, ‘Well, we don’t want to tell anybody to eat dirt. Maybe there’s a liability issue here,'” Spike said.

KIRO host Jake Skorheim said the official team spokesperson urged people not to eat the dirt.

“It’s not actually dirt. There is a chemical mixture that the field is made up of to absorb water,” Jake explained.

The show managed to acquire just enough dirt for Spike. Clinging to hope, he swallowed it down with some milk.

Washington's students' test scores have revealed startling results, with nearly one-third of students failing to reach basic grade level skills in math.

Washington’s students’ test scores have revealed startling results, with nearly one-third of students failing to reach basic grade-level skills in math, and among low-income students, 45% fail to reach that benchmark, according to The Seattle Times.

KIRO Host Jake Skorheim was concerned with a request for more money from Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal, which would be spent on a problem that has shown little to no improvement. The request asked for $10 million to improve math teaching skills for elementary educators and math software for students.

“I guess they’re going to get certified to teach children math, which I assume they needed to do the job in the first place,” Jake said on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio. “These are drop in the bucket, nonsense things that mean nothing.”

Jake explains that the current Washington budget for education is $33.6 billion, the largest allocation of funds in the state’s budget. Despite the heavy financial focus on children’s education, the needle hasn’t moved.

“We should be appalled at that number; it’s the largest spending in the state,” Jake said

“No, we should be appalled at the results,” Spike responded

“But the number doesn’t justify the results, right?” Jake asked. “Why are we spending that much? The problem with that argument is that more money is going to lead to better results, which is not the case.”

Learn from Geoff Gould how Washington grows colossal pumpkins and the tips for cultivating these massive fruits.

Fall weather has arrived in western Washington, bringing with it the season’s signature gourd: the pumpkin.

Geoff Gould, president of the Pacific Northwest Giant Pumpkin Growers, knows all about growing the largest pumpkins.

“Carpinito’s Pumpkin Farm and Corn Maze, we had one grower, the one that won it, a repeat winner—2,088 pounds. So he got first place and a bonus,” Geoff told “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio.

To create a pumpkin that large, Geoff said you would need a specific seed and fertile soil.

“You need the Atlantic giant seed variety to grow a big one that’s going to go a few hundred pounds or a few thousand pounds. You need good soil. You need to germinate those seeds at 80 to 90 degrees. You can’t just throw them out there in the ground. You need a lot of manure, water,” he explained.

Spike highlights NFL's smelling salt rules after Myers' kick. Explore the loophole and its impact on the Seahawks' game.

Leading up to the Seattle Seahawks’ game-winning field goal on Thursday night, Seahawks kicker Jason Myers utilized smelling salts — known to stimulate athletes’ senses — ahead of his kick.

The National Football League (NFL) had previously banned the use of smelling salts, but “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio detailed a tiny loophole allowing players across the league to continue using the tactic.

“The league did ban smelling salts, but teams cannot provide them because they have been accused of masking concussion symptoms,” KIRO host Spike O’Neill said. “When someone gets cracked, they do a concussion protocol. The smelling salts can clear their senses, so teams can’t provide them, but players can provide their own. They’re not banned.”

Governor Ferguson's tax increase poses challenges for Washington small businesses facing financial strain.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson signed the largest tax increase in state history in May, a $12 billion tax and fee package that takes effect Oct. 1.

KIRO host Jake Skorheim described one of the many small businesses affected by this new tax, which impacts niche business experiences such as the Creative Hands pottery studio in Bothell.

“This new tax that will be imposed on [Creative Hands], which technically qualifies as a live presentation, has an additional 10.2% sales tax. With just a sign of a pen from Governor Ferguson, he decided to make it harder to do business for these people,” Jake said on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio. “This poor business is already saying people are leaving, they’re losing business because of this tax.”

“There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of small businesses struggling to get by, subjected to the same tax,” KIRO host Spike O’Neill added.

The U.S. Census Bureau revealed that Seattle is one of three cities where the median income for married couples with kids is more than $250,000, joining San Francisco and Washington, D.C., according to The Seattle Times.

In light of the recent statistics, KIRO host Jake Skorheim posed a question about whether Seattle is completely out of reach financially for residents, or if the data is primarily counting a majority of wealthy people in Seattle.

“I don’t think it’s out of reach.
