The man who shot Washington State Patrol (WSP) Trooper Dean Atkinson in the face and hand in 2022 was sentenced to more than 25 years in prison on Thursday.

Brandon O’Neel previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder after shooting Atkinson on September 22, 2022, and was sentenced to 309 months.

“I appreciate the work of the court and the jury in this case and am relieved that such a dangerous individual was fairly and appropriately sanctioned,” WSP Chief John R. Batiste wrote in a statement.

Eviction notice triggers violent response

On September 22, 2022, an eviction notice was served on O’Neel’s residence, but officials found a note on his door with a specific sentence underlined.

“Evict me and I will execute any cop or manager you send period,” the note read, according to probable cause documents obtained by KING 5.

Inside the residence, a sign with the word “bomb” on it was found, prompting an evacuation and a WSP bomb squad response to clear the area. A bomb was not located inside the residence.

O’Neel was not home at the time of the WSP response, but returned home at approximately 5 p.m., and was no longer able to enter his apartment.

A witness relayed to a police officer that a masked man stopped his car in the road near the 1300 block of W. Poplar Street shortly after 5 p.m.

O’Neel’s car was stopped next to Atkinson, who was in a fully-marked police vehicle. The witness claimed O’Neel exited his vehicle and fired four or five shots at Atkinson, according to probable cause documents obtained by KING 5.

After the shooting, Atkinson was able to drive himself to Providence Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries. He was subsequently flown to Harborview Medical Center.

Atkinson’s father, Dean Atkinson Sr., detailed the chilling scene as Trooper Atkinson arrived at the hospital.

“[Trooper Atkinson] walked up to the ER door. It’s a secure facility kind of like this and banged on the door,” Atkinson Sr. said, according to KIRO 7. “His hand prints and blood were on the glass door of the ER. There was a blood trail from his car to the door. He protected himself with his hand when he got shot, and that’s what caused the hand injury.”

Law enforcement later identified O’Neel as the suspected shooter, who had already fled the scene.

O’Neel traveled to Oregon before deciding to change directions and head back into Washington. Officers stopped O’Neel on SR 125, and he was arrested.

Seattle space to house beer hall, 2 new restaurants

In April 2024, Sea Creatures signed the lease to take over the former F.X. McRory’s space, which closed in 2017 after 40 years of service at the location.

“Pioneer Square has always had a special energy — beautiful old buildings, art, sports, history, music and creativity all living side by side,” Jeremy Price, designer and co-owner of Sea Creatures, stated in a news release, according to The Puget Sound Business Journal. “We’re excited to add three new places for people to gather, eat, drink and hang out.”

Lowlander Brewing will be a brewery and beer hall that can accommodate approximately 100 guests in its 2,500-square-foot space. The brewery will also include an outdoor seating area equipped with a 12-foot-wide TV wall and a food menu featuring sausages, fries, and salads.

Un Po Tipsy will sit right next door, serving New York-style pizza by the slice inside its 1,200-square-foot restaurant space. The pizza spot will offer cocktails, wine, and canned beers alongside its pizza offerings.

My Oh My will be a fine dining experience with Sea Creatures describing the menu offerings as “Rome meets London meets Seattle,” according to The Puget Sound Business Journal. My Oh My will have a capacity of only 32 guests for its dinner service within a quaint 1,000-square-foot space.

The Sea Creatures restaurant group currently operates nearly a dozen restaurants across Seattle, including Wilmott’s Ghost, located inside The Spheres.

It also managed The Whale Wins, a James Beard Award-winning restaurant in Fremont that had its last day of service on Tuesday after it was forced to close. Eater Seattle reported the restaurant had been losing money for a number of years.

A Lakewood man was charged on Oct. 22 with allegedly making multiple death threats toward Washington Governor Bob Ferguson via comments over social media.

Casey Cutter Patterson, 34, made several “veiled” death threats toward Ferguson that were posted as replies on the Governor’s X account, according to The News Tribune.

After Patterson was arrested on a bench warrant Monday, he pleaded not guilty to the charges the following day, and his bail was set at $200,000.

Pierce County Superior Court Commissioner Barbara McInvaile also ordered a 10-year no-contact order for Patterson, who is currently in custody at the Pierce County Jail.

Lakewood man allegedly captures photos of Ferguson’s home

Investigators revealed that Patterson began to reply to Ferguson’s social media posts while he was the Washington Attorney General in 2023.

Initially, Patterson’s comments were not deemed threatening and were protected under the First Amendment as free speech, but in January 2024, Patterson’s tone shifted.

Patterson allegedly posted photos of the front door of Ferguson’s home several times, accompanied by threatening statements, with a specific March 2024 post being highlighted.

“Hey Bob, here’s your frequent reminder that you actually have no power over the people,” Patterson posted, according to The News Tribune, citing court documents. “The constitution limits you, not us. We have the right to alter or abolish our government when it no longer serves us. Here’s a picture of a quaint front door to help you sleep at night.”

Patterson’s threatening behavior continued, as he allegedly posted the photo of Ferguson’s front door four times over 19 days.

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) Criminal Investigations Department previously claimed it was unknown if Patterson took the photo himself, but it was later determined that he did allegedly capture the image of Ferguson’s front door.

A WSP lieutenant contacted Patterson on March 24, 2024, stating that his social media behavior had raised concerns.

“Mr. Ferguson does not want to be contacted, followed, tracked, or monitored in his personal life,” the lieutenant reportedly said, according to The News Tribune, citing court documents.

Patterson claimed he did not make any threatening statements toward Ferguson, and did not post or reply on the Governor’s pages for a long time after speaking with the lieutenant.

Threatening messages return months later

The concerning statements returned in November 2024, when Patterson allegedly replied to an account not affiliated with Ferguson, stating that he would continue using photos of the Governor’s front door.

“I know he’s worried about his address, which is public information,” Patterson said, according to The News Tribune, citing court documents. “He had WSP contact me for tweeting a picture of his front door. I’m going to keep tweeting it.”

Court documents revealed that Patterson allegedly continued to post photos of Ferguson’s door, or posts disclosing his address, through the end of 2024 and into 2025.

Another August 2025 post that raised concerns was Patterson allegedly uploading a photo of an AR-15, which was followed up with an Oct. 2 statement alluding to Ferguson’s security detail.

“I’d like to remind you that we have more guns than you and your WSP PSD, and we know where you live,” Patterson posted, according to The News Tribune, citing court documents.

Detectives pursued an arrest warrant for Patterson, alleging that his statements had escalated in severity and posed a legitimate threat to Ferguson.

Court documents noted detectives opted to move forward with an arrest warrant due to the possibility of Patterson resorting to physical violence in response to a court summons.

Patterson does not have any prior convictions, according to The News Tribune, citing court records.

Edmonds spa owner, employee brutally assaulted by convicted felon

The suspect first entered the spa at 5:39 p.m., holding a backpack and charging towards one of the employees. The man closed the front door to the business and began to attack the victim with his backpack.

The woman was repeatedly punched and shoved with a backpack up against a door, which eventually opened, and the assault continued out of view of the surveillance cameras.

More than seven minutes later, a second victim entered the spa to help the woman who was being beaten. The victim, attempting to assist, was then chased towards the front door and was assaulted in the doorway.

While the second victim was on the ground being punched by Boswell, the other victim exited from the backroom and tried to help the other victim in the entryway, but was punched and thrown to the ground by the suspect.

Shortly after, one victim was chased into the parking lot by the suspect, and another victim ran to the property manager, Daniel Mann, for help.

“[She] ran to my business, and my employee called the police,” Mann told KIRO 7. “He was trying to kill them, and he didn’t succeed, so they’re really lucky they’re alive.”

While officers were taking Boswell into custody, he said, “I’m very displeased that I didn’t kill those ladies,” according to court documents.

Victims continue recovery long after the assault

Both victims were transported to a local hospital, and the spa owner continues to recover from her injuries more than a month later. The other employee has also been unable to return to work because of the severity of her injuries.

Court records revealed that Boswell has had 18 prior convictions that date back to 1992, with crimes in Washington, Oregon, and Texas.

Many of Boswell’s criminal charges include robbery, assault, identity theft, and drug possession.

“He should be separated from everybody. Whether it’s mental health, some facility or prison,” Mann said. “He needs to be put away.”

Boswell is currently facing several felony charges, including two counts of attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and first-degree burglary.

Bail has been set at $1 million for Boswell, who is being held at the Snohomish County Jail.

A GoFundMe and GiveSendGo fundraiser has been created to assist with both victims’ recovery expenses.

Both individuals were transported to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries. Despite life-saving efforts, both the male and female died from their injuries.

The incident is currently being investigated as a homicide-suicide by TPD detectives and crime scene technicians.

A Bremerton man has been arrested after he allegedly broke into two Kitsap Transit ferries on Oct. 20, causing significant damage to each vessel.

The 36-year-old suspect had been at large for nine days before he was arrested by the Bremerton Police Department (BPD) on Wednesday, BPD confirmed.

The damages to both of the Kitsap ferries, the Lady Swift and Rich Passage, have been estimated at approximately $2,600.

Kitsap ferry vandal smashes windows, unties boats from dock

Officers responded to reports of vandalism and noticed a man had broken into the terminal around midnight, and an additional individual entered the property at approximately 3:30 a.m.

BPD said one of the suspects used a fire extinguisher to break windows on each ferry and untied them from the docks. Both ferries drifted a short way away from the dock before they were retrieved. Damages were also made to a power cable that was disconnected.

“There’s a lot of potential if they knew how to start the vessel, you know, we’ve got the Navy sitting right next to us. So there could have been a much worse situation,” Kitsap Transit Executive Director John Clauson told KING 5.

Surveillance camera footage and community tips led to the identification and arrest of the suspect. The suspect was booked into jail on multiple charges.

The second suspect was accused of stealing alcohol from a bar nearby and breaking into a vehicle.

No information has been released on the status of the second suspect.

Ballard High School teen dies after fall at Gas Works Park

Mattheis Johnson, 15, was killed in an accident after an outdoor pop-up concert at the park, according to the family’s GoFundMe.

A Seattle Fire Department spokesperson said that Johnson fell from a platform roughly 50 feet in the air. Johnson was later taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Mattheis was a bright, blossoming soul—an artist, musician, and friend to many. Though he may have seemed shy at first, those who knew him best saw that he lived with incredible vibrance,” Fundraiser organizers Amber Kolln and Katrina Hupp wrote on GoFundMe.

The GoFundMe fundraiser has received nearly 700 donations totaling more than $60,000.

“The outpouring of love from friends, classmates, and neighbors has meant so much to his family. We’ve created this space for those who’ve asked how they can help during this time of profound grief,” Kolln and Hupp wrote. “As his family processes this unimaginable loss, we’re asking for your support in easing the financial burden of end-of-life expenses. Funds raised will go directly toward funeral and memorial costs and to help the family as they take time to grieve.”

The Johnson family mentioned Mattheis played ultimate frisbee and ran track for Ballard High School. Additionally, the family noted that Mattheis sang and produced music, which can be found on Spotify.

“He was constantly making new friends and was never afraid to show a sweet, open-hearted love for his mom—even in public,” Kolln and Hupp wrote. “He was often seen walking his dog with his dad and/or younger brother, just being present in the world around him.”

Seattle Public Schools offers counseling services

In a letter from Seattle Public Schools sent to families, Seattle Public Schools (SPS) wrote that it would provide support and counseling services to those affected by the tragedy.

“I am confident our school community will come together to support one another during this difficult time,” SPS said in the letter. “At present, our school administrative and counseling teams are available and working with known and immediately impacted groups to provide support.”

SPS also noted that ways for students in the community to get in contact with its counseling department upon their return to school in the fall.

“We will also work to ensure that additional supports are in place as students and staff return to school in September. If your student needs support, please have them reach out to our counseling department leads Gail Olson Laing, gsolsonlaing@seattleschools.org, and Sonja Petersen, slpetersen@seattleschools.org.”

Mayor Harrell's plan aims to ensure police accountability by banning face masks for law enforcement in Seattle.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell proposed a new city ordinance Wednesday that would ban the use of face coverings by law enforcement officers to increase transparency and accountability.

If the legislation is approved, Seattle would be the first city in Washington and among a few major U.S. cities to adopt a law enforcement mask ban, the City of Seattle announced.

“Federal law enforcement officials operating in Seattle are not above the laws of our city,” Harrell stated. “The Trump administration’s tactic of using masked, unidentified agents to carry out their inhumane deportation agenda with impunity not only erodes accountability but also sows fear in our communities and creates a dangerous possibility for copycat actors.”

Face coverings and identification requirements

The face coverings that could potentially be outlawed include any mask, garment, helmet, headgear, or additional items that conceal law enforcement’s facial identification. Other facial coverings include a Balaclava, tactical mask, gator, or ski mask. The ordinance would also require officers to visibly display badges and emblems of their agency.

Various exemptions are provided for law enforcement officials who use medical or surgical masks to protect against the transmission of diseases or other environmental hazards.

Violations of the proposed ordinance by an agency or officer would result in a civil violation and a penalty of $5,000, enforced by the Office for Civil Rights.

“Accountability is not punishment, it is a promise kept,” said Derrick Wheeler-Smith, Director of the Seattle Office for Civil Rights. “This legislation strengthens civil rights by ensuring that masked or unidentified federal agents, and those pretending to be, are seen, documented, and addressed rather than swept aside.”

The ordinance aligns with two previously signed executive orders by Mayor Harrell earlier this month. The orders focused on the City’s preparedness in the event of unilateral troop deployment in Seattle, and its role in not aiding civil immigration enforcement.

The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is also developing policies for officers responding to cases where masked and unidentified individuals are detaining people. The mayor’s office noted that the increased use of masks among officers has contributed to civilians impersonating federal immigration enforcement officials, which poses a severe threat to communities.

“Our officers’ appearance will be consistent when someone calls 9-1-1 for help and Seattle police officers are dispatched. They will show up ready to serve the public with their faces uncovered and their SPD badge and name proudly displayed,” Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes said. “At our core, we are peace officers, and our goal is to protect people and keep the peace.”

DNA helps to solve 31-year-old Renton murder case

DNA technology advancements assisted investigators in connecting Jones to the murder, who was already serving time in California for an unrelated murder.

“After over 30 years, justice has finally been served for Stacy, Jacob, and their family,” Chief Jon Schuldt said. “Over the years, 50 different detectives have worked tirelessly to reach this moment. We hope the Falcon and Dewey families find some comfort in knowing we never gave up.”

RPD noted Jones will be sentenced on Dec. 12 for two counts of aggravated first-degree murder with deadly weapon enhancements.

Former UW grad takes ownership of U-District’s College Inn Pub

Jae Chang, a graduate from the University of Washington and owner of neighboring Cafe Happy, assumed the lease and launched a soft opening over the summer.

“There were some issues before, but now we’re able to bring it back to the original state and legacy,” Chang told the Puget Sound Business Journal. “Everyone who went to UW is really familiar, or has some sort of memory, with the pub.”

As the pub changes hands once more, Chang will be the sixth owner of the pub since it was founded in 1973. The College Inn Pub will be led by Dan Carlisle and Mark Kurtz, two former employees who will manage the joint.

“It came into my world like a storm, I really wasn’t prepared,” Chang told the Puget Sound Business Journal. “But there was a good crew, everything was operational, plus the good reputation since the beginning made it nice.”

The pub is currently running with limited capacity as various renovations are underway. A downsized food menu will be provided for the foreseeable future until Chang’s vision of a full-scale kitchen can offer a fully developed menu.

Notable renovations have been made to the pub’s interior, adding updated artwork and table arrangements. Chang aimed to target a younger audience with his modernized renovations, but longtime specialty offerings like Trivia Tuesdays and pool tournaments will remain.

A former JBLM sergeant faces justice for trying to deliver classified military information to China, threatening national security.

A former Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) sergeant was sentenced Tuesday for attempting to deliver national security information to China.

Joseph Daniel Schmidt, 31, was sentenced to four years in prison and three years of supervised release for two federal felonies, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced.

In June, Schmidt pleaded guilty to attempting to deliver national defense information and to retaining national defense information.

U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour noted the sentence given was based on the seriousness of the crimes and Schmidt’s mental health at the time.

Schmidt was an active-duty soldier from January 2015 to January 2020, where his primary assignment was at JBLM. While in this role, Schmidt had access to “secret” and “top secret” information.

After Schmidt left the military due to a mental health episode, he contacted the Chinese Consulate in Turkey and Chinese security services by email, offering national defense information.

U.S. Sergeant attempts to meet with Chinese officials in Hong Kong

Schmidt later traveled to Hong Kong in March 2020, continuing his efforts to provide Chinese intelligence with classified military information. Several lengthy documents were created by Schmidt, revealing various “high-level secrets” he had to offer to the Chinese government.

“As a retired Army officer, I find it unconscionable for a former soldier to put his colleagues and country at risk by peddling secret information and intelligence access to a hostile foreign power,” U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd said. “These cases remain a priority for our office to keep our country safe.”

Schmidt kept a device that allowed access to secure military computer networks, which was offered to Chinese authorities along with his assistance in gaining access to the networks.

Seventeen days after Schmidt made contact with Chinese officials, he was granted a work visa for China.

Schmidt stayed in China, spending most of his time in Hong Kong until October 2023, when he flew to San Francisco. Schmidt was arrested after he arrived at the airport.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg spoke in court Tuesday, claiming Schmidt “created documents based on classified and national defense information. He used his training to provide sensitive information to the Chinese security service. He knew what he was doing was wrong – he was doing web searches for such things as ‘Can you be extradited for treason.'”

The Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Seattle field office, W. Mike Harrington, stated that Schmidt betrayed his country’s trust by providing sensitive information to China.

“As a soldier, Mr. Schmidt swore an oath to protect the United States and its citizens who, in turn, entrusted him with their security and the secrets necessary to defend it,” Herrington said. “Instead of upholding that trust, he betrayed it by handing over classified information to China, as his admissions make clear. The FBI and our partners will remain vigilant in our mission to safeguard our nation, making every effort to uncover those who endanger it and hold them accountable.”

The FBI led the investigation in the case, with assistance from the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Command.

I-90 overpass replacement near Cle Elum will take several months, warns Governor Ferguson following damage from an oversized vehicle.

During an update Tuesday, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson revealed the process to replace parts of the westbound I-90 Bullfrog overpass near Cle Elum will “likely take several months” to fix, although westbound I-90 reopened ahead of schedule on Friday.

Ferguson provided this update regarding the I-90 Bullfrog overpass after it was damaged by an oversized load on Oct. 21.

Crews hired by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) worked nonstop over a 22-hour period to remove damaged portions of the overpass in response to an emergency proclamation signed by Ferguson on Thursday.

“Thank you to the WSDOT crews and contractors who moved quickly to reopen westbound I-90,” Ferguson said. “Our work to repair the damage is just beginning.”

Westbound lanes will remain open until WSDOT begins to replace the Bullfrog overpass, which requires the complete closure of westbound I-90 on a limited basis.

The communications manager for WSDOT, Meagan Lott, previously told KIRO Newsradio how impactful the closures will be for thousands of travelers who use this route each day.

“I-90 is one of the busiest routes in the state for east-to-west transportation,” Lott said. “We see about 17,000 drivers going westbound, and about 1,500 vehicles traveling over the overpass every day. It is going to have an impact on drivers, specifically if you’re trying to get somewhere in a timely manner.”

Most of the work is expected to take place at night, with limited daytime closures to occur only if necessary. A complete, updated timeline for the project is expected to be released in December.

“The loss of this overpass severely impacts the Cle Elum, Roslyn, and the Suncadia area. We will work as quickly as possible to replace this vital connection for the community,” Ferguson said. “We’ve seen too many bridge strikes — and their impacts on local communities — in the last few months. They are preventable, and we are working on strategies to reduce them.”

Looking ahead to WB I-90 replacement efforts

WSDOT is currently designing plans to repair the damaged section of the Bullfrog overpass. Engineers will choose the solution that “allows for rapid construction of the new span.”

Ferguson previously issued an emergency proclamation for the Bullfrog Road overpass, allowing the state to seek federal funding to begin work more quickly.

Ferguson noted that to remain eligible for the requested funds, the state must work alongside the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which is operational throughout the federal government shutdown, and delays are not currently anticipated.

As winter weather can be challenging for road construction, WSDOT will analyze the weather conditions and other needs once the design process is finalized, with additional information expected to be released in December.

When construction is underway, drivers can expect a full closure of westbound I-90, with detours via the on- and off-ramps during that time. WSDOT crews will install girders during the overnight closures, and travelers will receive updates in advance.

The state is also seeking reimbursement for the damages and repair costs from the truck operator and all responsible parties.

Driver who hit Bullfrog Road overpass cited for violating permit

The semi-truck driver who hit the Bullfrog Road overpass was cited for permit violations.

Allan Bergsma, 64, from Ontario, Canada, was issued a permit to carry the oversized load but did not follow the guidelines.

As part of the conditions for the permit, Bergsma had to use certain exits. In this case, Bergsma was supposed to get off on Exit 80 and then re-enter I-90 to avoid the ramp, but he kept going, Jeremy Weber, Public Information Officer for the Washington State Patrol (WSP), explained to KIRO Newsradio.

A Kent suspect in a Seattle shooting was mistakenly freed from a California prison, prompting an urgent manhunt for his capture.

A Kent suspect involved in a fatal Seattle shooting was accidentally released from jail in Northern California last week.

Isaiah Jamon Andrews, 20, was released by the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) on Oct. 22 from the Martinez Detention Facility, CCSO announced.

Andrews was being held on a juvenile warrant from Sacramento and an out-of-state arrest warrant for a homicide.

After CCSO noticed Andrews had been released, search efforts were conducted in the surrounding area. Officials concluded Andrews was no longer in the area.

The search for Andrews is ongoing, led by the U.S. Marshals Service. Local law enforcement agencies have also been notified of Andrews’ accidental release.

CCSO urged anyone with information on Andrews’ whereabouts to call 911 or CCSO at (925) 646-2441.

Northgate light rail station shooting

Andrews is suspected of shooting and killing a 20-year-old man near the Northgate light rail station on Oct. 15.

The shooting took place on N. Northgate Way just before 5 p.m. When police and fire personnel arrived at the scene, they found a man shot in the chest in the parking lot of a hotel. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Gunfire and, of course, homicides are difficult things for us all to deal with. This has no place in our society,” SPD Detective Eric Munoz told KIRO Newsradio.

SPD was previously investigating what led to the shooting. No suspects have been arrested, as of this reporting.

“The circumstances leading up to the shooting are under investigation,” Munoz previously said. “Our detectives are basically trying to figure out what happened and what led up to this shooting.”

Kent suspects found asleep in a vehicle with drugs

As officers arrived, three suspects were found asleep in their car. Officers observed drug paraphernalia and what appeared to be a rock of fentanyl through the windows.

KPD noted the rock of fentanyl was in the lap of the front seat passenger. Additional units were requested for assistance as KPD assumed the suspects had fallen asleep due to drug use.

Officers delayed waking up the potentially intoxicated driver until tire deflation devices were in place, intending to prevent the driver from reentering the roadway and endangering others. A police car was also strategically positioned directly behind the suspect’s vehicle to deter an escape.

The driver was identified as a 30-year-old Chehalis man, who was cooperative when he woke up, and exited the vehicle after officers instructed. The man was “slow and sluggish” but followed all of the officers’ commands. KPD later determined the man had fentanyl in his pocket and was booked for possession of illegal narcotics.

One of the passengers was identified as a 43-year-old Kent man, who was not compliant with officers. The man refused to exit the vehicle after several commands from officers and did not keep his hands visible to officers.

The Kent man aggressively resisted officers as they attempted to remove him from the vehicle. As the man was being removed from the vehicle, an officer identified that the suspect had a handgun. The suspect was eventually placed into custody, and the firearm was determined to have been stolen from Everett in August 2025.

The male passenger was arrested and booked for an escape warrant, four counts of possession of legend drugs, possession of a stolen firearm, and resisting arrest.

The third passenger, a female, was detained without incident and not charged.

“We are thankful for a city that supports extensive officer training,” KPD stated. “This type of incident can go very wrong for our officers, but they slowed down, restricted the movement of the vehicle, had the appropriate gear to handle the job, and had extra officers present. All good decisions that protected the community and the officers.”

Three E. coli infections in PNW lead to recall of Twin Sisters Creamery's aged, raw milk cheese for public safety.

Three Pacific Northwest individuals have reported Escherichia coli (E. coli) infections linked to the consumption of aged, raw milk cheese from Twin Sisters Creamery in Ferndale, prompting a recall on Monday.

The illnesses occurred between Sept. 5 and Sept. 16, with two Washington patients and one person from Oregon who developed infections, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) announced.

One individual is a child, younger than 5 years old, and the other two are adults. Of the three cases, one individual has been hospitalized. Molecular fingerprinting of all three cases revealed extremely similar bacteria, suggesting there was a common source for each infection.

The Oregon individual reported consuming Twin Sisters Creamery Farmhouse cheese before noticing symptoms. The cheese is aged for at least 60 days to reduce potential pathogens, which is required by law.

Multiple samples of Twin Sisters Creamery cheese have been collected for testing, including unopened and opened samples. Both tested positive for E. coli, and additional unopened samples of cheese from various locations have been collected and are pending results.

Explore Kirkland's new cold case website to aid in solving unsolved investigations and bring closure to families.

The Kirkland Police Department (KPD) has introduced a Cold Cases webpage for the department’s unsolved cases, which is intended to keep each case in the public eye and find additional information.

“Our goal is to keep these cases in the public eye and encourage anyone with knowledge of these cases to contact our Investigations Division,” KPD stated. “Even the smallest detail could help bring closure to victims and their families.”

There is one open cold case provided on the webpage, a 2006 homicide of John Schuoler, and KPD continues to seek the community’s assistance in closing it. Additional cases are expected to be posted as they become available.

Details from the 2006 homicide of Kirkland’s John Schuoler

John Austin Schuoler, 23, was found dead in his bedroom by his roommate on September 15, 2006. The cause of death was ruled as a homicide due to blunt force trauma.

KPD noted that despite an extensive investigation, no suspect was charged in the case, and the investigation went cold.

Schuoler was known as John LeBar in high school, lived at the Sunset Shores apartment complex in Kirkland, and worked at a local restaurant. The post recognized Schuoler as a “local fixture” in the Kirkland community

On September 14, 2006, Schuoler had the day off from work. He met with a friend for lunch at Cucina-Cucina in Kirkland, and later went shopping at Old Navy in Bellevue.

At 3:47 p.m., Schuoler called his mother, Elaine “Lani” Faye, and left a voicemail. KPD stated this was the last time Lani had contact with her son.

John returned to his apartment at approximately 7:00 p.m., visited with his friends and his roommate, and communicated with others on his computer and cell phone until roughly 10:00 p.m.

Schuoler would later be discovered dead by his roommate after the roommate returned from work the next day.

The KPD investigation did not find evidence of a forced entry into the apartment. Schuoler’s hunter green “army style” canvas backpack, purchased from REI, was missing from the room.

Investigators believe John’s killer was someone he knew, and not a random act of violence.

On August 3, 2012, Schuoler’s mother, Lani, passed away without knowing the identity of her son’s killer. KPD noted that at the time of her death, she continued to be convinced that people with information regarding John’s murder would come forward.

KPD is asking for the community’s help in bringing closure and justice for John and the rest of his surviving family.

Those with information regarding John Schuoler’s case can submit a tip here.
