Across Washington, government agencies and nonprofits are scrambling to help 930,000 state residents who will lose their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, food benefits starting Nov. 1 due to the ongoing federal shutdown.

On Friday, a federal judge in Rhode Island blocked the Trump administration from halting SNAP benefits that feed 42 million Americans amid the ongoing government shutdown.

During the hearing, an attorney for the Justice Department argued the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program no longer existed because Congress had not appropriated funds for it, and that it was up to the administration whether to tap $6 billion in contingency funds to keep the program running.

The Rhode Island ruling came just minutes after a federal judge in Boston said plaintiffs in a similar case are likely to prevail on their claim that suspending SNAP benefits is unlawful. That judge said she is still weighing a request for a temporary restraining order to maintain the payments.

Gov. Ferguson diverts $2.2M to local food banks

In a last-minute effort, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson is diverting $2.2 million to food banks across the state. Many low-income, no-income, or disabled residents who are SNAP-eligible people rely on food banks for groceries every day.

However, Aaron Czyzewski, Director of Advocacy and Public Policy at the non-profit Food Lifeline, said it may be too late for governments to intervene, and SNAP recipients are now left to rely on the kindness of friends, family, and their communities for help.

He said they are also seeing more and more federal government and military families in need and actively reaching out, asking for help.

“There were 200 military families who were needing support for Thanksgiving groceries,” Czyzewski told KIRO Newsradio. “That list is now up to 800 families.”

On Tuesday, U.S. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal partnered with the City of Seattle on a resource fair to help other federal workers with food and bills, who were impacted by the shutdown.

One of those workers, Alison Jowers, a furloughed federal contractor, shared, “I was able to stockpile some food, so I have a little bit to get me by. I have rent for November. If this continues, I may not have rent for December.”

Nonprofits stockpile resources in preparation for SNAP benefits running out

Jamie Lynn Wheeler with Northwest Harvest said, while a lot of nonprofits stockpiled food and other resources in anticipation of SNAP benefits running out, they are thinking outside the box for ways to help.

“I’ve even seen, with Halloween around the corner, people trying to provide packaged food from their front doors that way,” Wheeler said.

The Edmonds Food Bank is teaming up with the Feed Me Hospitality and Restaurant Group to deliver extra food and repurposed food to people in need.

“The combination of inflation, increased grocery costs, the shutdown, SNAP cuts, and then already us dealing with food cuts from food we would normally receive,” explained spokesperson Kelly Lewis. “All of that is hard.”

Private companies are also chipping in to help. Instacart is offering customers who receive SNAP benefits 50% off their next grocery order. DoorDash is waiving service and delivery fees for 300,000 orders for SNAP recipients. And GoPuff is donating $10 million to help SNAP recipients.

Bank of America said it’s delivering $5 million to immediately support families and individuals experiencing urgent food needs. The money will go to nearly 100 nonprofit organizations currently addressing increasing needs at the local level in communities nationwide. In addition, the corporation is committing $250 million over the next five years to support food insecurity across American communities.

Washington's officials encourage early ballot returns via drop boxes instead of mail-in voting to ensure timely election participation.

Washington’s top election officials are urging residents to return their ballots early and to use drop boxes instead of mail-in voting, as new U.S. Postal Service (USPS) standards could delay postmarks and deliveries.

King County Elections spokesperson Haley Watkins said some counties started noticing — for the first time — problems during the August primary, when ballots weren’t always marked the same day carriers picked them up. The new USPS rules clarify that postmarks may no longer reflect the day mail was first collected.

“I know several other counties did see a big, big jump in how many ballots were returned too late because they didn’t get that postmark,” Watkins said. “You are not guaranteed a postmark on the same day that you drop your ballot in the mail.”

Secretary of State urges residents not to use mail-in voting

In a statement sent to KIRO Newsradio, Secretary of State Steve Hobbs said voters should “consider using a drop box, going to a voting center, or physically visiting a post office within seven days of the Nov. 4 general election,” adding that his office can’t guarantee ballots mailed later will be postmarked in time.

The Postal Service has issued similar guidance, recommending voters mail ballots by October 29 to ensure on-time delivery. The agency has also stopped counting Saturdays as transit days, reduced afternoon pickups, and slowed some first-class mail delivery standards. Most of those issues, they say, could impact more rural areas.

The new standards come as USPS faces significant financial challenges, with a projected net loss of $6.9 billion for fiscal year 2025. While they’re not necessarily new standards, when it comes to mail-in ballots, fewer postmarks and votes not being counted are new to many election officials across the state.

“You need to make sure that you’re getting your ballot postmarkeFd if you’re going to utilize the mail,” Pierce County elections spokesperson Kyle Haugh said. “You can’t just rely on putting it in the box in front of your home.”

The Washington Secretary of State has provided voters with a map that includes statewide locations of ballot drop boxes and voting centers for the current election.

A chain-reaction crash on Aurora Avenue N injured several people after a driver in crisis ignored a red light.

Several people were injured Tuesday afternoon after Seattle police said a driver in crisis ran a red light, triggering a chain-reaction crash on Aurora Avenue N.

The collision happened around 1:30 p.m. at N. 130th Street. When the officers arrived, they reported finding multiple damaged vehicles, including an overturned van, and debris scattered across the intersection.

Seattle Fire crews treated several victims ranging in age from six to 63, including a man trapped inside the van and the woman who police said caused the crash. All were taken to Harborview Medical Center or Northwest Hospital for further treatment.

Independent Journalist Steve Hickey (PhotogSteve) provided KIRO Newsradio with a video of the multi-vehicle collision.

Investigators said the woman had been driving erratically in the northbound bus lane before running the red light, sideswiping a car, and slamming into a van that flipped onto its side. The vehicle then hit three more cars stopped in traffic.

Police noted multiple 911 callers had reported the woman’s dangerous driving before the crash. She was not arrested but was taken to Harborview for a mental health evaluation. Officers cited her for several traffic violations.

A significant ICE overhaul may impact deportation efforts in Seattle and Portland, raising concerns among local communities.

A major shakeup is underway inside U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and it could hit leadership in Seattle and Portland.

Among those reportedly affected are ICE leaders in Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Denver, Philadelphia, El Paso, New Orleans, Seattle, and Portland, where some could be replaced by handpicked officials from Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Internal tensions rise over deportation tactics

Administration officials noted the changes are aimed at increasing efficiency and meeting deportation targets. But inside the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the mood has reportedly turned “tense” and “combative” as friction grows between ICE and Border Patrol leaders over tactics.

Some ICE officials favor focusing on “the worst of the worst,” including criminal offenders or those with active deportation orders, while CBP has taken a more aggressive, broad-sweep approach that’s drawn lawsuits and community backlash in several cities.

The shakeup comes as deportation totals remain below administration goals. DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, Tricia McLaughlin, responded to possible reassignments in an interview with Fox News.

“We’re all about results, but we have a lot more work to do. We want to really surge those arrest numbers, especially given that through that one Big Beautiful Bill we’ve received the funding to do it,” McLaughlin said. “At this point, we’ve arrested and deported about 500,000 illegal aliens from this country, and 1.6 million illegal aliens have self-deported.”

There have been violent clashes between federal officers, ICE agents, and protestors in Portland and Seattle this past year. Many of those clashes have resulted in injuries on both sides and multiple arrests — especially outside the ICE detention facility in Portland.

A divided federal appeals court ruled that President Trump could send 200 National Guard troops to Portland to quell those protests. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals voted 2-1, allowing the deployment despite objections from local officials and the Oregon Attorney General.

The court found that Trump’s assessment of the situation warranted federal intervention, citing threats to federal personnel and property. However, dissenting judges expressed concerns about the legality of deploying troops in response to largely peaceful protests

On Monday, State Attorney General Nick Brown responded to the court’s decision, telling KIRO Newsradio, “There’s nothing that we see, legally or factually, that would justify troops being sent,” Brown said. “But even more broadly than that, I don’t want to live in an America where the United States military is patrolling our streets.”

There’s no official timeline yet for when the new ICE directors will take over their posts.

Other WA agencies mandate body cameras; Pierce County's policy only suggests deputies 'should' keep them on, raising concerns.

Some police departments require body cameras to stay on. Pierce County’s policy says deputies only “should.”

While many major law enforcement agencies, including the Seattle Police Department (SPD), require officers to keep their body cameras rolling once it’s activated, a policy designed to protect both suspects and officers, Pierce County’s current rules are far less strict.

Right now, Sheriff Keith Swank said in a Thursday press conference, Pierce County policy advised deputies “should” turn on their body-worn cameras, not “shall,” which he said he would prefer. Sheriff Keith Swank said that a single word makes all the difference.

Pierce County body camera policy inconsistencies

That policy gap is now under scrutiny after Pierce County Major Chad Dickerson was charged this week with two counts of vehicular assault in connection with a July crash that injured a family of six, including three children and a pregnant woman.

According to court documents, some deputies who responded to the crash either failed to activate their cameras or turned them off while still at the scene.

Sheriff Swank told reporters Thursday that all deputies who responded that day should have had their cameras on, but admitted his department’s current policy doesn’t require it.

“I believe that everybody at that scene that day should have had their camera on,” Swank said. “And I don’t know if there’s anything I can do about it, but if there is, I will.”

KIRO Newsradio looked at the policies for other major law enforcement agencies around the state, and most of them require, per policy, their officers and deputies to activate their body cameras when investigating a potential crime, including a D.U.I. investigation, and that they do not deactivate their camera until after their investigation at the scene is complete.

“Anytime we’re taking enforcement action or dealing with a crime or investigating a crime, they’ll be on,” Seattle Police Lt. Kirk Waldorf said. “Once we leave the scene and we have no substantial investigative issues, then we can turn them off as we leave.”

At least one department responded that their officers are allowed to mute or deactivate audio and video from being recorded by body cameras, but only when it is a matter of protecting the privacy of a victim or witness, when an individual wishes to provide information anonymously, to avoid recording a confidential informant or undercover officer, when discussing case tactics or strategy, during private conversations with other members or emergency responders.

Possible revisions to the Pierce County body camera policy

At the press conference, Swank said he’s been pushing to change his office’s policy language from “should” to “shall” to remove any ambiguity, but until that happens, deputies are technically not required to keep their cameras rolling.

“I’ve been working with the Union on this policy,” Swank explained. “But we have to negotiate these things; you have to go through a legal process in order to change the policy. I can’t just go in and change the policy.”

Swank also announced an internal investigation into the conduct of deputies at the scene, stating he only learned the details after receiving the charging documents this week.

“As soon as I received this document and reviewed it, and the undersheriff reviewed it, we opened an investigation into all the conduct of the deputies involved that day,” Swank said.

The Washington State Patrol handled the criminal investigation into the crash. Swank said he stayed away from that case entirely to avoid any perception of impropriety.

He did not say how long the internal investigation will take.

A one-pound kitten is safe after WSP troopers rescued it from I-5, showcasing their dedication to animal welfare.

A one-pound kitten found along I-5 near Tacoma is safe, thanks to two Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers who came to his rescue.

On X, WSP troopers explained that after they received multiple 911 calls from people who spotted the kitty on the shoulder of the southbound I-5 near 96th Street, Wednesday, Troopers Bonner and Fath pulled up and discovered him hidden inside the crack of a jersey barrier.

Bonner carefully lifted the frightened animal to safety.

“Ah, such a cutie,” Bonner was heard saying on the WSP social media video.

Fath then jumped on his radio and announced the good news, “We got the cat out.”

This morning, #YourWSP received 911 calls about a kitten stuck on the left shoulder of southbound I5 near Tacoma. Trooper Bonner and Trooper Fath found him hiding under a concrete barrier.

After a quick vet visit, a trooper in @wspd1pio agreed to care for the little guy. pic.twitter.com/p170VHkT4G

— WA State Patrol (@wastatepatrol) October 22, 2025

On the way to the veterinarian, Bonner spoke softly to his tiny passenger, his voice filled with calm and care.

“Good kitty… hiiii,” he said gently from behind the wheel. From right next to him came a small, trembling reply — a high-pitched, delicate meow — as if the kitten knew he was finally safe.

Amid the rescue and relief, the two troopers gave the little survivor a name that seemed meant to be, Trooper.

And in a fitting twist, one of their own from District 1, which serves Pierce and Thurston counties, opened their heart and home to him, giving the once-lost kitten a place where he’ll always belong.

Discover the latest updates on Pierce County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Chadwick Dickerson's alleged DUI arrest and its implications.

Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) Maj. Chadwick Dickerson was charged in connection with driving under the influence and vehicular assault, according to charging documents with the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Dickerson’s charges follow his arrest after a crash near Graham in July that involved a family, including a pregnant woman who was driving.

A 72-hour hold for Dickerson to not contact witnesses or victims previously expired. However, the prosecuting attorney’s office had requested that the sheriff order the witnesses who work with PCSO not to speak with Dickerson, to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

Discrepancies in arrest of Pierce County Sheriff’s Office major

Dickerson’s arrest showed discrepancies between law enforcement over whether Dickerson exhibited any signs of alcohol use and whether he left the scene of the accident after being told to remain until investigators arrived.

“In the Dickerson matter, our office is not filing charges today,” Adam Faber, a spokesperson for Pierce County, wrote in an email. “The State Patrol’s investigation is ongoing, and the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office will continue to review evidence as it comes in.”

At the probable cause hearing for the 72-hour hold, the court imposed conditions to include no contact with witnesses or victims, but those court conditions would expire automatically.

Pierce County Sheriff’s Office major collides with SUV

According to court documents, investigators said Dickerson, a 25-year veteran who oversees all sheriff’s detectives, failed to yield the right of way at the intersection of 132nd Avenue E. and 288th Street E. and collided with an SUV.

“When Dickerson entered the intersection, his Dodge Ram pickup struck the passenger side of the Ford Expedition that was traveling west on 288th,” Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Pierce County Loren Halstrom wrote in an incident report based on Washington State Patrol (WSP) investigations. “The Ford Expedition rolled onto its side and stopped against a fence. The Dodge Ram stopped in a ditch.”

Pierce County prosecutors now say a deputy at the scene, who was described as a technical collision investigator, instructed Dickerson to remain at the scene until WSP Trooper Shannon McKenzie arrived to investigate. However, Dickerson left the scene after his wife picked him up.

“The deputies informed Trooper McKenzie that Dickerson had been picked up by his wife and transported to MultiCare Emergency at 132nd and SR 161,” Halstrom said in a Probable Cause Declaration.

Court documents also said when McKenzie asked if Dickerson showed any signs of impairment before leaving the scene, deputies said no.

“When asked about signs of impairment, deputies on scene informed Trooper McKenzie that they did not observe any and stated there were no odors of intoxicants,” Halstrom stated. “When asked if Dickerson was speaking normally, they advised there was no slurring in his speech.”

Later, at the Urgent Care, WSP said they found several indicators of impairment and arrested Dickerson on suspicion of DUI.

“While speaking with Dickerson about the collision, troopers noted several indicators of impairment, including bloodshot, watery eyes, and a strong odor of intoxicants on his breath,” a WSP press release said.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said they requested WSP to take over the crash investigation, based on the severity of the collision and Dickerson’s position with PCSO.

SUV involved in crash had 6 occupants, including pregnant woman

The six occupants in the Ford Expedition were a 27-year-old woman who was driving and is seven months pregnant, her 30-year-old husband, her 57-year-old mother, and her three children, ages 8, 4, and 3, according to a news release from WSP. The 57-year-old woman suffered several broken bones. The other occupants appeared to be uninjured.

The investigating trooper, McKenzie, also looked inside Dickerson’s Ram pickup truck to check for valuables before the truck was towed.

“The truck appeared to be cleaned out of valuables,” Halstrom said. “There was a storage compartment in the rear seating area that was empty.”

In a statement, a Pierce County spokesperson said, “The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office confirms that one of our majors was arrested over the weekend in connection with this incident. This is a deeply concerning matter, and our thoughts are with everyone impacted.”

A new report from the University of Washington Center for Human Rights is raising alarm over how federal immigration agents may be accessing local police data.

A new report from the University of Washington (UW) Center for Human Rights is raising alarm over how federal immigration agents may be accessing local police databases and what that means for privacy across Washington state.

Under WA’s Keep Washington Working Act, local agencies are prohibited from assisting federal immigration enforcement. However, researchers said at least eight local law enforcement agencies, including the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and police departments in Arlington, Auburn, Lakewood, Richland, Sunnyside, Wenatchee, and Yakima, shared automated license plate reader (ALPR) data directly with U.S. Border Patrol at some point this year.

More alarmingly, the report revealed federal agents accessed data through direct data sharing and through what researchers call “back door” access from at least 10 police departments that never granted explicit permission, between May and August 2025.

According to UW, those local agencies included Black Diamond, Centralia, Chehalis, East Wenatchee, Eatonville, Ellensburg, Grandview, Mukilteo, Prosser, and Renton. In other cases, local officers reportedly conducted searches on behalf of federal immigration agencies.

Flock Safety data used by U.S. Border Patrol

The data comes from Flock Safety, a private company whose cameras automatically record license plates to help track stolen vehicles and identify suspects. But the UW study found that the technology, increasingly used by police, school districts, and even homeowners’ associations, is also being tapped by federal immigration authorities in ways that may violate state law.

“Both locally and nationwide, the rapid expansion of Flock ALPRs has generated controversy; many have expressed concerns related to privacy impacts and the systems’ possible use for civil immigration enforcement and/or to criminalize access to reproductive healthcare,” the report stated. “Similarly, ALPR data is among the forms of surveillance that could be used to criminalize those seeking gender affirming healthcare, as privacy advocates have warned.”

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) said Flock Safety and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in Texas used Washington state license plate data to investigate people seeking reproductive healthcare, including, EFF claims, a woman’s self-managed abortion.

EFF alleges deputies accessed Flock’s system under the guise of a “missing person” search, but EFF claimed records they obtained show they were pursuing an abortion-related case.

Since then, Johnson County Sheriff Adam King has denied any link to Texas’s abortion ban, and Flock Safety called the media reports “false” and “misleading.”

City of Auburn condemns U.S. Border Patrol’s use of Flock Safety system

On Tuesday, MyNorthwest reported that the City of Auburn publicly condemned the U.S. Border Patrol’s use of its Flock camera system, including a post on the city’s Facebook page, after it discovered agents used it without permission.

However, new information shows city officials and the police department may not have fully understood how to prevent access to their data. On their Facebook page, the city explained it was aware the U.S. Border Patrol gained direct access to their Flock camera system, and added, “We want to state clearly: this access occurred unknowingly to us.”

The issue is also raising questions about the transparency of Flock’s technology, whether local police fully understand who can access their data, and whether local agencies understand how to set up the technology according to their departments’ policies.

Further down in their post, they said, “After learning via the report that Flock’s ‘National Lookup’ feature may have allowed unintended access through a shared national network, Auburn Police leadership immediately acted and has since turned off that feature…”

Flock’s systems are now deployed in at least 80 cities, six counties, and three Tribal governments in Washington. UW researchers said that as the network expands, so does the risk that local data could be used for surveillance or immigration enforcement, despite state protections.

Across the country, many lawmakers have embraced the use of technologies like Flock as a powerful tool to help federal agents investigate specific, legally justified operations — from immigration enforcement to organized crime and trafficking.

Florida is considered by many as the poster state for teaming up with federal officials. It recently received a boost in federal funding, including $38 million, after entering into what Governor Ron DeSantis called a “historic agreement” with ICE through the 287(g) program, which empowers state and local law enforcement agencies to help federal agents. The funding is part of $1.7 billion being distributed nationwide under President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill.”

According to UW, the findings in their report deserve serious attention. The reports concluded Washington residents have a right to know whether police agencies using Flock and other surveillance systems are complying with state law, including the Keep Washington Working Act.

“The proliferation of these technologies impacts the rights of all Washingtonians. And at a time when many of our neighbors are being subjected to raids by federal immigration authorities, which may result in fates as dire as their being forcibly disappeared, Washingtonians expect that our government exercise particular caution in sharing data with the federal agencies involved in such abuses,” researchers said. “And on the basis of that information, Washingtonians deserve a robust public discussion about the degree to which we authorize the use of these technologies in our communities.”

Experience the quiet reverence at T-Mobile Park before the Mariners' first pitch, where anticipation fills the air.

Before the gates swing open and the crowd pours in, there’s a certain stillness that settles outside T-Mobile Park.

The sidewalks are quiet. The crisp scent of autumn hangs in the air. And soon, every inch will overflow with fans draped in navy and teal — each carrying their own story of hope and belief, but also loss.

“To be a Mariners fan, you have to be comfortable with heartbreak,” longtime M’s fan Scott Kim explained.

Standing near the statues of the greats outside the stadium’s home plate entrance, Ken Griffey Jr. and Edgar Martinez, you can almost hear the echoes of seasons past — the cheers, that heartbreak, and the familiar refrain of “maybe next year.”

Lee Jones has been saying it for more than two decades.

“I actually had a World Series ticket years ago when they almost made it,” Jones explained.

To be a Mariners fan is to live in the echoes of the past and find meaning in the wait, and faith in the game. That’s what makes it matter more when it happens here in Seattle. When a team catches fire in October.

When players like Gilbert, Julio, Polanco, and the Big Dumper deliver moments, they aren’t just highlights on a jumbo screen. They remind us how to believe again, and they are woven into our city’s very fabric.

T-Mobile Park has long been called a cathedral by the tracks — a place where every clap carries a memory, and every cheer feels like a prayer.

And when the Mariners take the field again tonight for Game 4, that familiar hum will return – growing louder with every pitch.

Because here in Seattle, we don’t just watch baseball. We feel it. We live it. And we believe in it together.

Before the gates open for Game 5 in the American League Division Series, T-Mobile Park is a stadium that sits in hushed anticipation.

Before the gates opened for Game 5 in the American League Division Series, T-Mobile Park is a stadium that sits in hushed anticipation. Every empty seat waiting to hold a story. And in that quiet, you can almost hear the great radio calls from legendary play-by-play announcer Dave Niehaus describing Ken Griffey Jr.’s two-run home runs, bringing back the ‘Old Time Religion’, or Randy “The Big Unit” Johnson striking out Tim Salmon to beat the Angels for the American League West Division title in 1995.

There’s a music to the stadium you can’t find anywhere else. A rhythm in the crowd, a crescendo of tension and joy that swells with every pitch. At T-Mobile, the noise combines into one beautiful melody, and hope rings louder than the roar itself.

There are so many memories I remembered while walking alone through the park early Friday morning, hours before first pitch. King Felix Hernandez pitched a perfect game from the mound just over my shoulder in 2012. Edgar Martinez sent the Mariners to the ALCS in 1995 on the same property that was once home to the Kingdome.

Today, we watch stars like Julio, J.P., and a guy nicknamed The Big Dumper. We won’t ever forget Cal Raleigh’s single-season, 60 home runs – and he did it playing catcher.

All of those memories unfolded right here in Seattle – in the cathedral we call our ballpark. It is a place alive with the spirits of past legends and, hopefully, in Game 5, the birth of new ones.

Of course, every cathedral needs a choir. And you can bet that choir, fans of the Seattle Mariners, will show up, singing together, at least for one more night.

Two hours before the first pitch of Game 1 in the American League Division Series (ALDS), the sidewalks outside T-Mobile Park pulsed with anticipation.

Two hours before the first pitch of Game 1 in the American League Division Series (ALDS), the sidewalks outside T-Mobile Park pulsed with anticipation.

Classic ’80s hits spilled out from Hatback Bar & Grille as fans lined 1st Ave S. in SODO in the October air — the kind of crisp, electric breeze Seattle hasn’t felt in nearly a quarter-century.

Among the crowd were Scott Kim and his 17-year-old son, Brayden, who walked shoulder to shoulder toward the ballpark, decked out in white, cream, and blue Mariners jerseys. They waited a long time for this.

“Oh, I’m super excited,” Brayden said with a grin across his face.

For the first time since 2001, the Mariners have entered the postseason as division champions. After years defined more by heartbreak than highlights, Seattle is finally back in the playoffs, and for the Kims, it was more than just a game.

Scott explained that he talks about the game with his son.

“How the pitches are going, how the batters are approaching a certain at-bat,” he said, but they also use that time to catch up. “Then we’ll talk about school. We’ll talk about life, his girlfriend.”

Brayden was born seven years after the Mariners last won the AL West. His first memorable Mariners moment came watching Cal Raleigh smash home runs in this year’s derby on his TV. A live playoff game with his dad is different.

Playoff atmosphere electric in Seattle

“Sitting with my dad at the ballpark is something to treasure,” Brayden said. “It’s just quality time. And something really special.”

On the concourse, the familiar call of “Cold beer! Ice cold beer!” echoed between the food stalls. Fans in vintage Griffey jerseys and Julio Rodríguez tees shuffled to their seats. Among them was 49-year-old Mike, who was spending the night with his 74-year-old father, Dale.

“My brother’s not here,” Mike admitted with a smile. “He’s pretty jealous.”

But for Mike, that just means more one-on-one time with dad, something increasingly rare and all the more valuable during a playoff run.

“I’ve been a fan, high water or low,” Dale explained. The two have long lost count of how many national anthems they’ve stood for or how many seventh-inning stretches they’ve shared. But this one was different.

“Especially during a championship series,” Mike said. “It’s cool to be able to experience it and create memories together.”

As the game unfolded, the crowd swelled with every pitch. In the bottom of the eighth inning, as Julio Rodriguez rocketed a shot into left field, bringing in Cal Raleigh from second base for the go-ahead and game-winning run, the stadium erupted, strangers and families high-fived and hugged. And somewhere in the roar of the stadium, the real victory became clear.

“This is the first playoff run we’ve had since he’s been alive,” Scott Kim said, nodding toward Brayden. “To share it with him? I’m super excited.”

For a city starved of postseason baseball, the most meaningful win, perhaps, wasn’t on the scoreboard. It was in the seats, passed down between generations.

As the deployment of 200 National Guard troops to Portland has been postponed, Rob McKenna said he won't be surprised if a federal judge declares it illegal.

As the deployment of 200 National Guard troops to Portland has been postponed by “a couple of days”, former Republican Washington State Attorney General, Rob McKenna, said he won’t be surprised if a federal judge declares the deployment illegal before it happens.

The Oregon State Department of Military blamed the delay on “administrative tasks” that most likely include figuring out logistics like transportation to the ICE detention facility in S.W. Portland, housing, and food for the soldiers. There’s no word on whether the soldiers will be armed or not.

The lawsuit, filed last week by the Oregon State Attorney General and City of Portland in U.S. District Court in Oregon, claims the Trump Administration does not have the authority to deploy or send troops anywhere to conduct law enforcement operations. McKenna explained that attorneys must convince a judge that President Trump’s action violates an almost 150-year-old federal act that places limits on the use of U.S. military forces.

“In fact, it may violate a law called the Posse Comitatus Act, which expressly prohibits the use of troops for law enforcement purposes,” McKenna said.

Portland protests lead to Trump’s National Guard deployment

After weeks of sometimes violent exchanges between Homeland Security Officers, ICE Agents, and protestors that have involved the use of rubber bullets, pepper spray, and rock throwing, which have resulted in multiple injuries on both sides, Trump declared Portland a “war-ravaged” city that needed law and order.

Wednesday, on Truth Social, Trump seemed to up the ante on that rhetoric, saying Oregon Governor Tina Kotek was living in a “dream world.” He also labeled Portland a “never-ending disaster.”

However, the deployment delay has raised new questions about what exact duties National Guard troops will carry out in Portland. According to a National Guard spokesperson, the 200 troops have been undergoing training to learn “special rules for the use of force” they can and cannot use within U.S. borders. McKenna said what Trump hopes to accomplish remains murky.

“It isn’t clear what the President thinks he’s accomplishing here except he wants a crime-fighting role and he thinks this is the way to get it,” McKenna said. “In his first term, there were riots. I’ve heard speculation he regrets he didn’t take a stronger reaction at that time.”

So far, training costs for the guardsmen have reportedly reached $3.8 million. Governor Kotek has estimated final costs of their potential deployment could cost taxpayers more than $10 million.

Speaking to local media, a former Oregon Guardsman and Republican State Representative, Alex Skarlatos, said the troops will most likely focus on protecting federal property and ICE Agents coming and going from their facility.

“At the end of the day, it’s going to be a lot of peacekeeping, and I imagine their presence is going to try and tone down outside of the ICE facility in particular,” Skarlatos said.

Skarlatos, who served in Afghanistan, is also known for his role in stopping a terrorist attack on board a moving train from Amsterdam to Paris in 2015.

Previous judge ruled against Trump

On Monday, Oregon and Portland officials followed up their lawsuit with a motion for a temporary restraining order. While the case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Michael Simon, an Obama appointee, there’s no timeline for a ruling.

Earlier this month, a federal judge cited the Posse Comitatus Act in his ruling that the administration broke the law in its use of the military in Los Angeles. McKenna said that, in the Oregon suit, it might be clear which way the judge will rule during oral arguments.

“Sometimes the way a judge asks questions or makes statements, you can get a clue on how they’re going to rule,” McKenna explained. “The fact that Charles Brier in Southern California already ruled against the Administration on this question might also be a preview.”

During a government shut down, many others deemed "essential workers," will be forced to work without pay until the shutdown ends.

The U.S. government officially shut down Wednesday at 12:01 a.m., after federal lawmakers failed to reach a compromise on funding, leading to some 750,000 workers across the country, including 77,000 in Washington, being furloughed.

Many others deemed “essential workers,” from active-duty members of the military and federal police officers to TSA Agents and air traffic controllers, will be forced to work without pay until the shutdown ends.

However, as Democrats and Republicans point political fingers at each other—Republicans are advocating for a short-term funding measure that would extend current funding levels until November 21, 2025.

They argue Democrats are obstructing progress by insisting on health care provisions as part of any deal, while Democrats are pushing for the inclusion of health care subsidies and other provisions in the funding bill, stating that they will not support a bill that does not address these concerns. Everyday Washingtonians could soon begin to feel the fallout.

Flying amid a government shutdown

If you are flying, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) spokesperson Perry Cooper recommended getting to the airport early.

“Our big reminder for travelers is to just think of it like a busy time period as you’re coming to the airport,” Cooper said. “Think of those regular things to get here early.”

At all eight U.S. military bases across the state, small businesses, from restaurants to dry cleaners and more, rely on military pay. With some 60,000 active-duty military personnel going unpaid, the impact could ripple through local economies.

“These are real things in the lives of people,” Army veteran Alonzo Sirmans explained. “When you have this affecting their finances, it really increases their anxiety.”

U.S. Postal Service unaffected

The U.S. Postal Service will be unaffected, and mail will continue to be delivered every day. Social Security and Medicare will continue to be sent out. However, federally funded food programs might be impacted, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits, which were, coincidentally, adjusted Wednesday to include larger monthly benefits.

If Congress does not pass a funding bill or continuing resolution soon, under the Antideficiency Act, agencies must halt nonessential operations and furlough staff until funding is approved.

Programs like SNAP, which is controlled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, would be affected, as seen during the 2018 government shutdown under President Donald Trump’s first term.

“If a shutdown extends beyond mid-October, USDA could technically tap its contingency reserve funding to cover SNAP costs,” Gina Plata-Nino, Interim Director at Food Research & Action Center, explained. “Under the prior administration, this reserve stood at $6 billion, but it is unclear how much remains available or whether the current administration would choose to use it.”

Federal workers could be impacted

Of the 77,000 federal workers who could be impacted across Washington, the decision on which workers will be classified as “essential” and which will be furloughed is an agency-by-agency decision.

Federal services, including national parks and museums, will close, and many government functions will be halted. Furloughed employees typically receive back pay once the government reopens, but essential workers may not receive timely compensation unless specific legislation is passed.

Members of Congress and Trump will continue to receive full pay during the shutdown.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the ICE building in Portland on Sunday after President Donald Trump announced Saturday he would send troops to Portland to handle “domestic terrorists,” claiming that ICE facilities in the city are “under siege from attack by Antifa.”

“It would be an understatement to say that I am so disappointed at the irresponsibility of our federal government,” Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said in response to Trump’s decision to deploy federal troops.

Standoff between ICE agents and protesters in Portland

Earlier on Monday, there was a standoff between protesters and ICE agents, with protesters shouting and masked agents taking photos from rooftops. However, so far, there has been no violence.

Travis Decker's remains are analyzed by experts to uncover psychological insights, says Chelan County Coroner Wayne Harris.

Chelan County Coroner Wayne Harris told KIRO Newsradio it is impossible to determine how murder suspect and fugitive, Travis Decker, died or when.

Harris said Decker’s torso and cranium remain missing. Therefore, they cannot determine whether he committed suicide or suffered from a fall, and the lack of other remains rules out any toxicology reports.

“There were a few leg bones, a couple of arm bones, some vertebrae, some ribs, and a foot, and they were scattered in about five different locations, at an elevation of about 4200 feet,” Harris said. “Unless another hiker finds a cranium and the forensic anthropologist can examine it and determine that he may have fallen, or if there is a bullet hole in his skull.”

Earlier this week, Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison said the remains investigators found included most of Decker’s remains, but not all of them. He described them as skeletal, including part of a spinal column, feet, and other bones.

During a press conference Thursday, Morrison said Decker suffered injuries in the time after he allegedly murdered his three daughters at the Rock Island Campsite near Leavenworth. However, he did not comment on the nature of those injuries or what may have caused the injuries.

“He succumbed to those injuries, whatever those injuries were,” Morrison said during a news conference. “We’re going to hear back from our coroner’s office if they are able to get a cause of death or a time of death.”

Harris now said there’s no way to determine whether Decker suffered any injuries.

“Not without any further bone parts that we can look at, no, we have no idea,” he explained.

After investigators found bloody handprints left by Decker on his truck at the original crime scene, speculation grew about a possible attack or bite from Decker’s dog that was eventually rescued and taken to an area humane shelter.

However, Harris said, “the anthropologist did look at the few bones he had, and he could not see any fractures in them, didn’t see any animal activity, like any teeth marks in the bones.”

Travis Decker’s remains found on Grindstone Mountain

The remains were found on September 19 on Grindstone Mountain, about 0.74 miles from the crime scene at the Rock Island Campground outside Leavenworth, where Chelan County deputies discovered the bodies of 9-year-old Paityn, 8-year-old Evelyn, and 5-year-old Olivia Decker on June 2.

During Thursday’s press conference, Morrison thanked Washington State Patrol Forensic and Operational Psychologist Dr. Stacy Cecchet, who specializes in criminal behavioral analysis, for analyzing several pieces of evidence and pointing investigators toward the Grindstone scene.

“She had highlighted an area of interest on Grindstone Mountain, she even ‘guestimated’ about what elevation we were looking at,” Morrison said. “She brought a different perspective that we had received from the FBI or the Marshal’s Service.”

In a post on LinkedIn, Dr. Cecchet said, “I am honored to have supported the Washington State Patrol and partner agencies in the Travis Decker case. While the outcome is deeply tragic, I am grateful to have played a role in bringing some measure of closure to the Decker family and the community through this collaborative effort.”

After an initial look at the conditions of the remains and how spread apart they were, Morrison said investigators now think Decker may have died days or even hours after the deaths of his daughters.

“Based off the information we have, it appears that the potential of him going directly up Grindstone Mountain shortly after the event or within that day would be pretty consistent,” Morrison said. “We’ll look at the time frame once we hear back from the Coroner’s Office, and hopefully, we can get a clearer picture of what was the cause of death.”

U.S. Marshals Service declares Decker dead

The U.S. Marshals Service declared Decker dead on Tuesday. In the motion, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington, Marshals and federal prosecutors asked a judge to dismiss an arrest warrant for Decker based on DNA results from clothing found near the skeletal remains found by investigators.

However, Morrison said he believed the Marshals’ conclusion was premature because not all DNA results were back from the Washington State Patrol’s Crime Lab—including the skeletal remains that were discovered. By Thursday, those results confirmed DNA from the clothing and bones did match Decker.

Decker had been on the run since May 30 after, investigators said, he kidnapped and murdered his daughters during a court-ordered custody visit. The massive manhunt that followed led tactical teams to areas around Blewitt Pass, the Teanaway Valley, and Snoqualmie Pass in neighboring Kittitas County. Investigators said they never found any signs during those searches that Decker was dead or alive.

While investigators still wait for a complete identification of the remains, they are also waiting for an official cause of death. Morrison told KIRO Newsradio he hopes their findings finally bring the case to a close and, hopefully, closure to family and friends—especially the girls’ mother, Whitney.

“If anything, we hope she will sleep better at night, she wouldn’t be looking over her shoulder,” Morrison said. “But we understand nothing we do is going to reverse this travesty and bring her daughters back.”

Morrison said Decker’s remains will be released to his family at an appropriate time in the future.

Travis Decker, the man accused of killing his three young daughters, Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia, at a campground near Leavenworth, has been declared dead by the U.S. Marshals Service.

Travis Decker, the man accused of murdering his three young daughters, has been declared dead by the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service.

DNA from skeletal remains found by investigators in a remote area near Rock Island Campground matched Decker’s, the sheriff’s office announced during a press conference Thursday.

The U.S. Marshals Service declared Decker dead earlier this week, but Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison wanted to wait until all DNA results were returned from the Washington State Patrol’s Crime Lab.

“We want to make sure what we have from clothing matches up with the remains and all of our other evidence, but I think we’re on the right path,” Morrison told KIRO Newsradio Tuesday. “I think that’s just being cautious and thorough with our investigation.”

In a motion filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington, federal prosecutors asked a judge to dismiss an arrest warrant for Decker based on DNA results from clothing found near the skeletal remains where the bodies of his daughters—Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5—were found on June 2.

The remains were found on September 19 on Grindstone Mountain, about 0.74 miles from the crime scene. Morrison said the area was so inaccessible that search crews had to be flown in by Spokane County helicopter. Drones and cadaver dogs ultimately helped locate the remains.

Some of the clothing found near the body matched what Decker was last seen wearing. Investigators said they also recovered personal items, including a bracelet and a key fob that is consistent with the fob to Decker’s pick-up truck that was left at the scene.

Decker was reported on the run since May 30, after, according to investigators, he allegedly kidnapped and murdered his daughters during a court-ordered custody visit. The massive manhunt that followed led tactical teams to areas around Blewitt Pass, the Teanaway Valley, and Snoqualmie Pass in neighboring Kittitas County. Investigators said they never found any signs during those searches that Decker was dead or alive.

Morrison said another reason he was waiting for all DNA results to be returned is to dispel rumors that Decker killed a fourth person and swapped clothing.

“We’re also aware of some narratives that got out there that he simply killed someone else and left their remains on the mountainside,” Morrison said.

Investigators are still waiting for an official cause of death. Morrison told KIRO Newsradio that by closing the case, he can hopefully bring closure to family and friends.

Sheriff reveals more ties to discovered human remains and Travis Decker

Human remains, thought to be those of Decker, were discovered in a remote location south of Leavenworth, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office reported.

On Friday afternoon, Morrison confirmed in a press conference that the clothing, a distinctive bracelet, and chewing tobacco found with the body belonged to Decker.

A massive, multi-agency search led to the discovery of the human remains. Those involved with the search included the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, the U.S. Border Patrol, the U.S. Forest Service, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI.

“While positive identification has not yet been confirmed, preliminary findings suggest the remains belong to Travis Decker,” the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office wrote in its announcement.

Clothing and other personal items linked to Decker were found with the remains, Ryan Moody, Chief of Special Operations in the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, told KIRO Newsradio Thursday night. The remains were found earlier this week on Grindstone Mountain, a few miles from where the girls’ bodies were found.

“Was it a surprise? Yes and no,” Moody said. “I’d say we were always hopeful that we would find him. But, you know, after this long, you try not to get your hopes up.”

The Sheriff’s Office is currently processing the scene, assisted by WSP’s crime scene response team, which will be followed up with DNA analysis.

“It was a huge relief,” Moody said. “Especially to see it in, like, my detectives’ eyes — the amount of work and the amount of stress that they’ve gone through, and just the day-to-day, constant work that they’ve put into this, along with all our other partners who put just as much work into it. And most importantly, the reason we do it is for the closure for Whitney, and for her to be able to kind of move on.”

Whitney is the girls’ mother.

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office has contacted the Decker family with their findings.

Authorities were prepared for years-long investigation to find Travis Decker

Authorities were prepared to search for years to find Travis Decker.

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference last month that revealed the FBI was leading a major search effort near Leavenworth for Decker.

Peter Orth, spokesperson for the FBI Seattle Field Office, said authorities were conducting a detailed grid search in an area that spans about a quarter mile around the campsite, where the bodies of Decker’s three young daughters were found.

“Nearly 100 FBI and partner agencies personnel on the ground to participate in this search operation,” Orth said. “We (had) specialty teams from the federal government and local partner agencies all deployed for this operation.”

Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison said federal, state, and local agencies combed the rugged terrain near the scene of the crime at Rock Island Campground.

Harrell’s budget includes a new B&O tax that will be included on a ballot for voters to decide. Also incorporated is a permanent public safety sales tax, according to Seattle City Budget Office Director Dan Eder.
