Two people, an adult male and his 7-year-old son, were killed after a boat overturned on the Bogachiel River.

Another person who was also on the boat remains missing.

At approximately 12 p.m. Oct. 30, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a boat accident near Forks. The individual calling reported that he and three others were aboard a boat when it flipped.

The closest location of the vessel was south of milepost 4 off SR 101, southwest of Forks.

The man who contacted law enforcement was able to save himself by grabbing onto a tree before calling 911, reporting that the other three were still in the water.

“Rescue personnel located 35-year-old Christian Akers of Sequim and his 7-year-old son, Wyatt Akers, but sadly, both were pronounced deceased despite lifesaving efforts,” the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office reported. “39-year-old Alfonso Graham of Port Orchard remains missing, and search efforts are ongoing.”

In addition to the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Districts 1 and 6, a Forks ambulance team, the La Push Police Department, the La Push Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the National Park Service all responded to the call to provide assistance.

“The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest condolences to the friends and family affected by this tragedy,” the sheriff’s office continued. “We also share a heartfelt thank you to all first responders for their tireless efforts as the search for Mr. Graham continues.”

While unconfirmed as of this reporting, a family dog may have been aboard the vessel alongside the four individuals.

A piece of ammunition from WWII was discovered in Grays Harbor County, prompting an immediate response from the county sheriff's office.

A piece of ammunition from WWII was discovered in Grays Harbor County, prompting an immediate response from the county sheriff’s office.

The piece of ammunition was a possible explosive device located near Simmons Road and Monte Brady Road in Montesano.

“The Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad and the U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team responded to assist with the investigation,” the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office stated. “After X-raying the device, it was determined to be an inert piece of ammunition from a World War II–era Super Bazooka.”

Inert ammunition does not contain gunpowder or an explosive charge to initiate its detonation. A perimeter was still established, with nearby roadways closed off as a precaution during the investigation.

“We want to thank the public for their patience during this incident and remind everyone — if you come across a suspicious or unfamiliar item that could be dangerous, do not touch or move it,” the sheriff’s office continued. “Contact law enforcement immediately. It’s always better to err on the side of caution.”

An atmospheric river is expected to bring heavy rain to western Washington, beginning Friday evening — the night of Halloween.

An atmospheric river is expected to bring heavy rain to western Washington, beginning Friday evening — the night of Halloween.

“The main threat with this system is the heavy rain, though wind gusts in the 20–35 mph range can also be expected for anyone outside as the system moves through,” KIRO 7 meteorologist Morgan Palmer said. “This will not be a repeat of last weekend’s destructive wind event, and now that trees have already been tested by stronger winds this fall, the scope of power outages is expected to be much more limited.”

While this system is expected to be much weaker than last weekend’s storm, one to three inches of rain is estimated to occur.

Washington is home to some of the most atmospheric rivers in the country, most of which occur along the Oregon coast and in the Pacific Northwest. Atmospheric rivers are relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere – like rivers in the sky, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) – that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics.

The average atmospheric river carries roughly the amount of water vapor as the average flow of water at the mouth of the Mississippi River, with exceptionally strong ones transporting up to 15 times that amount.

The record for Halloween rainfall at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is 1.18 inches in 2014.

The strongest downpours should be clear by Saturday morning.

“Rainfall totals of a quarter- to a half-inch around the lowlands can be expected by early Saturday morning, with higher amounts across the northern islands, far northern sections, the coast, and the Strait,” Palmer stated.

A Winter Weather Advisory is currently in effect for the Cascades above 4,500 feet in Whatcom and Skagit counties through 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Thursday marked the grand opening of Washington's newest Chick-fil-A in Marysville.

Thursday marked the grand opening of Washington’s newest Chick-fil-A in Marysville.

To celebrate the opening, which first opened its doors at 6:30 a.m. Oct. 30, customers dressed in cow print — whether it’s a full cow costume or a simple cow-spotted accessory — can enjoy one free entrée.

This location is one of nine restaurants expected to open in Washington by early 2027. In total, this restaurant expansion will create more than 900 jobs in the state.

“Chick-fil-A has always felt special to me — from my first visit to the restaurant, to my time in the Leadership Development Program, and now serving the Marysville community as a local Owner-Operator,” Chandler Reeves, the owner and operator of the restaurant, said in a prepared statement. “As we open the doors of Chick-fil-A Soper Hill, I’m excited to create a place where families can gather, team members can grow, and guests feel welcome.”

Ten people were arrested in connection with three significant, interrelated, drug and gun trafficking conspiracies.

Ten people were arrested in connection with three significant, interrelated, drug and gun trafficking conspiracies.

The arrests were conducted by the Seattle Police Department (SPD) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a culmination of a year-long investigation.

“These defendants were trafficking fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin on the streets of western Washington,” U.S. Attorney Floyd stated. “These drugs take a heavy toll on our community. Worse yet, this group trafficked in dozens of firearms – some of them high powered assault style weapons. Yesterday alone, law enforcement seized 34 firearms.”

Authorities seized approximately 100,000 fentanyl pills, more than 30 guns, and $40,000 in cash.

“This violent organization not only trafficked dangerous drugs but was responsible for putting firearms on our city streets,” Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes stated. “I’m thankful for the great work of our Seattle Police officers and our federal partners.”

Arrests took place across 12 locations, including at a property in Centralia. At this property, authorities uncovered more than 25 kilograms of fentanyl powder, 90,000 fentanyl pills, and two dozen firearms.

The arrests were a part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice (DOJ) to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.

DOJ confirmed that the defendants appeared in the U.S. District Court in Seattle earlier this week.

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) caught another driver using a fake passenger in order to ride in the HOV lane.

This fake passenger fit the Halloween theme, with WSP Trooper Rick Johnson calling it a “scary HOV violation.”

Additionally, Microsoft was named the best place to work for women by Forbes earlier this year.

Forbes ranked a total of 900 companies. To be considered for the ranking, companies must have more than 1,000 employees and operate globally.

Microsoft, based in Redmond, has approximately 228,000 employees worldwide.

Rounding out the top 10 are Delta Air Lines, Alphabet, Adobe, BMW, NVIDIA, Sony, IBM, Apple, and the Lego Group.

Forbes surveyed more than 300,000 people across more than 50 countries to determine the ranking, asking questions such as how much they would recommend their employer to family and friends, how competitive the pay is, career advancement opportunities, and efforts to achieve a healthy work-life balance.

PeaceHealth announced it is laying off 241 employees, citing financial and operational realities.

The layoffs impact approximately 2.5% of the company’s workforce. The majority of the positions affected are administrative roles. Vancouver’s Southwest Medical Center is among the facilities affected.

The Catholic nonprofit health system stated that the decision was difficult, but necessary to ensure long-term sustainability. The cuts came just weeks after Chief Executive Charles Prosper claimed federal cuts and changes to health care could impact PeaceHealth in numerous ways, according to Cascadia Daily News.

Earlier this year, PeaceHealth reduced its workforce by 1% and eliminated 18 leadership roles.

PeaceHealth is holding a “ritual of honoring, release and renewal” to “honor those who are leaving the organization,” according to Cascadia Daily News.

The health system employs over 16,000 people across the Pacific Northwest.

Two iconic Seattle venues, Madame Lou’s and Here-After, are closing their doors, City Cast Seattle, a podcast and newsletter, confirmed.

Two iconic Seattle venues, Madame Lou’s and Here-After, are closing their doors.

City Cast Seattle, a podcast and newsletter following the ongoings of the Emerald City, confirmed the closures after staff at both venues received emails from management.

The date for the closure is potentially as early as mid-December, City Cast Seattle stated.

The Crocodile, an independent music venue hall, owned and operated both Madam Lou’s and Here-After. Madam Lou’s was named after the infamous Seattle iconoclast, hosting everything from all-ages punk shows to dance nights.

Here-After is a 100-seat comedy club and movie theater that hosts touring comics, local monthly comedy showcases, live podcast tapings, selected films, and intimate performances by musicians.

“It’s absolutely devastating. We were really excited about them opening and taking that leap to open a bigger space because it offered more diversity,” Leigh Bezezekoff, co-director of the Washington Nightlife Music Association, told City Cast Seattle. “It’s heartbreaking when any music ecosystem loses their small rooms because that is a building ground for so many artists of all genres to work out, get experience on stages, connect with fans and build their fanbase.”

The Crocodile reinvented itself after moving a few blocks from its original spot in 2020. The new space allowed the music venue to have a 750-capacity showroom, a 300-capacity venue, a 100-seat comedy club and movie theater, a daytime café, an alley restaurant-bar, and a 17-room hotel in the 1954 Sailors Union of the Pacific building, formerly El Gaucho.

The building is located at First and Wall Street. The Crocodile also operates Hotel Crocodile and Oodalalee, which are expected to remain open, as of this reporting.

MyNorthwest reached out to the Crocodile for comment.

Certain Bellevue spots and roads could be home to new speed safety cameras after city leadership identified 37 potential locations.

Now that locations have been identified, the city is conducting a public awareness campaign to encourage the community to voice their opinions on the camera system.

By December, the Bellevue City Council will decide whether to move forward with the cameras or not. The soonest they can be installed is mid-2026.

“Bellevue’s Vision Zero Initiative is working to make sure everyone gets home safely — no matter how they travel,” the city stated. “The goal is to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets by 2030. One of the most important ways to reach that goal is by encouraging safe speeds.”

Bellevue’s Vision Zero plan, similar to Seattle’s, is a directive to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injury collisions on city streets by 2030.

Each camera will also include a minimum 30-day warning period before citations are issued.

The cameras are planning to be installed in priority areas with a history of severe crashes and street-racing hot spots, including Bellevue Way N.E., Coal Creek Parkway S.E., Forest Drive S.E., Lakemont Boulevard S.E., and several downtown streets.

“Speed remains a top contributing factor in serious and fatal collisions,” Andrew Singelakis, Bellevue’s transportation director, told KIRO 7. “By identifying strategic locations for speed safety cameras, we’re taking a proactive step to protect people walking, biking, and driving in Bellevue.”

An informative session will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, to give the Bellevue community its first chance to voice opinions or concerns regarding the speed safety cameras. Click here to join the meeting online.

The Tacoma City Council is considering a proposal that would further expand the city’s camping ban.

The Tacoma City Council voted to expand the city’s camping ban, KIRO 7 reported Wednesday.

Council passes previous Tacoma camping ban in 2022

The previous ban was passed in 2022 after Council member John Hines drafted the measure in response to a sharp increase in public health and safety concerns reported by community members regarding areas near Tacoma shelters.

Three years later, Hines asked to expand the city’s no-camping ordinance.

“I am a firm believer that we need to provide shelter and housing for people to end homelessness,” Hines said, according to KIRO 7. “At the same time, we have to keep our public spaces open and accessible to the public.”

Hines cited a 7% decrease in service calls for homelessness-related complaints in 2025 compared to 2024.

Supporters stated the proposal is about public safety, while critics argue it criminalizes homelessness. Violating the no-camping ordinance results in 30 days in jail, a $250 fine, or both.

Under the new proposal, Hines added an option for violators to attend Therapeutic Court, where individuals can engage with services in exchange for having their charges dropped.

“It’s a policy that really focuses on making people move from one place to another and clean up whatever they leave behind, and there’s just not enough of a focus on solving the people’s situation,” Rob Huff, the community relations manager for the Tacoma-Pierce County Coalition to End Homelessness, told KIRO 7.

A suspect in possession of large amounts of counterfeit money and fake IDs was arrested after fleeing multiple traffic stops by law enforcement overnight Sunday.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office receivied a tip that a person fled Centralia Police Department in a vehicle, prompting multiple deputies to search for the suspect. After a short time, deputies found the driver heading toward Tenino.

Thurston County deputies pursued the suspect, who attempted to evade police. One deputy was eventually able to spike the car.

“As the driver tried to flee on I-5, one of the wheels fell off the car and the driver surrendered,” Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders wrote on Facebook.

When the suspect was arrested, deputies uncovered a “large amount” of counterfeit money and fake IDs. The suspect had multiple warrants out for their arrest, including third and first-degree theft, multiple counts of forgery, multiple counts of theft of a motor vehicle, and multiple counts of ID theft.

The suspect was also involved in a fraud incident last week in Tumwater, and is expected to face additional charges.

“Nice job by night shift deputies to get a career criminal off the road!” Sanders continued in his post.

As Game 7 approaches, "Seattle's Morning News" on KIRO Newsradio fielded texts from listeners detailing their journey as fans of this franchise.

The Seattle Mariners are playing in a Game 7 for the first time in franchise history.

If the team wins, it erases the distinction of being the “only MLB franchise to never reach the World Series.” If the M’s lose, it’ll be among the most disappointing results to a season in the city’s history.

As Game 7 approaches, “Seattle’s Morning News” on KIRO Newsradio fielded texts from listeners detailing their journey as fans of this franchise, and how essential a victory Monday night would be.

“Would we even be Seattle if it didn’t come down to game 7?” one listener wrote in.

“I’ve been an Ms fan since the beginning. My dad took me to games at the Kingdom and I got to meet Spike Owen,” another listener texted in Monday morning. “I then got to take my dad to a game at (then Safeco) he’s been gone 20 years, I want to go to the WS for him. You guys got me crying now.”

“Lost my dad this May. He was a Lefebvre believer and season ticket holder at the Kingdome,” another listener texted. “He was so stoked about this team and had high hopes for this season. He was right. Refuse to lose! LFG!”

After outlasting the Detroit Tigers in an epic, 15-inning Game 5 of the ALDS, the Mariners had a commanding 2-0 lead in the ALCS against the Blue Jays after stealing a pair of wins at Toronto’s Rogers Centre. The Blue Jays won three of the four next games, including two at T-Mobile Park, to even the series.

“In ’95, I was in the Kingdome watching Edgar make Mariners & Seattlites dreams come true!!!” a KIRO listener texted. “It was so amazing it blew our minds and is indelible, forever etched in our minds.”

The Seattle Mariners are 6-0 when they play on the same day as the Seattle Seahawks.

“Go M’s for my dad, Frank, in Heaven — lifelong, diehard fan!” one “Seattle’s Morning News” listener wrote. “We used to drive up to ‘Cheapskate Hill’ above Sick’s Stadium to watch!!!”

Fans are dipping into every favorable superstition they have, including paying for “Etsy witches” to cast spells. This trend started when a local fan spent $16 for a curse-lifting spell from a “witch” on Etsy, a global online marketplace for handmade gifts and crafts, to break a bad losing streak. An incredible winning streak followed after the Etsy witch cast the spell, creating a viral sensation in the process.

“Good Morning Beautiful People! GO MARINERS!!! I’m keeping the good witchy vibes going here,” a listener texted.

“Again, I wish the announcers calling the game were Dave & Rick,” one listener, Randy, wrote. “I listened to them every night while washing dishes at a restaurant in Bellingham while going to Western.”

The Seattle Mariners are going with right-hander George Kirby as their starter for Monday night’s do-or-die Game 7. The Toronto Blue Jays will counter with two-time All-Star right-hander Shane Bieber.

“I saw my 1st Ms game in 1979 at the Kingdome, Floyd Bannister was the starting pitcher against the Tigers,” another “Seattle’s Morning News” listener wrote. “Willie Horton hit his 300th HR, and the Ms won 4-3. Long suffering … that’s 46 years ago, for those keeping track!”

Game 7 of the ALCS is set for 5:08 p.m. Monday at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Radio coverage will be on Seattle Sports, with the TV broadcast airing on FOX and FS1.

A man was arrested after a car chase attempting to evade police led to a standoff in Port Ludlow, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

A sergeant with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office attmepted to conduct a traffic stop after spotting a vehicle traveling more than the posted speed limit on Oct. 19. The driver ignored the traffic stop, speeding off and ignoring police until he reached his driveway.

“Commands were given to the driver who did not cooperate and resisted arrest,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office stated on Facebook. “Pepper spray was released in an attempt to subdue the driver, but he was able to make it into his house.”

Shortly after he made it into the home, neighbors called 911, claiming the man was walking through their backyard with a shotgun.

After creating a barrier in the residential area, the sheriff’s office was able to locate the suspect in a heavily wooded area using drone technology and a K9 unit. The suspect was booked into Jefferson County Jail, while the shotgun was recovered nearby.

“The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all the agencies who assisted in a safe resolution,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office stated.

You can tell a lot about a person by how they make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Unfortunately, one part of the process divides families.

You can tell a lot about a person by how they make a PB&J sandwich.

For me, it starts with good, hearty wheat bread. Not that soft, sugary stuff pretending to be healthy. The kind with little seeds that make you feel like you’re doing something good for your body while you’re about to eat half a jar of peanut butter.

Chunky peanut butter. Always chunky. The kind that fights back. If your forearm doesn’t get a workout spreading it, you’re doing it wrong.

And raspberry jam. Never grape. Raspberry. Preferably that Danish kind that comes in the navy-blue plastic bucket. It’s like the champagne of jam. If you know, you know.

Now, here’s the secret. Peanut butter on both sides of the bread. Keeps the bread from getting soggy. I’m always surprised when people don’t know this.

But then comes the part that divides families.

RELATED STORIES

Harger: Seattle’s 'shame mail' to Aurora sex buyers is long overdue

Ursula: The real 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' is not what you think

Harger: It's time for an adult conversation about the justice system

The controversial choice to use the same knife for the same sandwich

After I finish the peanut butter, I don’t get a new knife for the jelly. Nope. I wipe the knife clean, and I dip it right in. Half of you just gasped while the other half is applauding. And I know who you gaspers are. You’re the people who use a separate, dedicated spatula just for mayonnaise.

Look, I’m not trying to start trouble. I just hate being wasteful. Why dirty another knife? Why make the dishwasher run early? I’m not here to keep Big Dishwasher in business. I swear, every time I grab a second knife, I can hear the dishwasher groan. I start worrying: is this the knife that finally tips it over the edge?

Like, one more utensil and suddenly we’re calling a plumber and taking out a second mortgage. It drives my wife absolutely insane.

She’ll open the jam jar, see that little peanut-buttery swirl, and act like she’s discovered a crime scene. It’s like I’ve defiled the kitchen. I say I’m saving water. She says I’m a monster.

She’ll hold it up like evidence. “CHARLIE… what is THIS?” I respond, “That is efficiency.”

“That is disgusting,” she retorts.

I tried to explain it’s no big deal, but she looks at me like I’d just confessed to putting ketchup on ice cream.

But you know what? This is what real relationships are built on. Not the big stuff. Not communication or trust. It’s this. The eternal question: Do you need two knives for one sandwich?

And for those of us brave enough to say no, we are the unsung heroes of the kitchen. Saving water. Saving soap. Saving marriages. Because if love can survive a little cross-contamination, it can survive anything.

Next time, we’re tackling something even more divisive: The top sheet and why it’s not optional, it’s civilization. Unfortunately, I’m apparently the only person in my house who believes in it.

Several cars were towed this week from an empty commercial lot near the Lynnwood light rail station after fans parked there in order to take public transportation to Wednesday's Mariners game.

Several cars were towed this week from an empty commercial lot near the Lynnwood light rail station.

Dozens of fans parked their cars there in order to take public transportation to Wednesday’s Mariners game, only to find that their vehicles had been towed.

On “The Gee and Ursula Show,” Dana Tackett claimed she thought it was OK to park there.

“There were no signs. We know how to look for signs with no parking,” Tackett said. “There was no fencing. There were probably about, I would say, 20, 25 other cars there.”

According to Tackett, who didn’t know it was private property, the tow company collected and removed approximately 50 vehicles Wednesday night during the Mariners game.

“On that direct lot itself, or the driveway that we came in on, there is absolutely nothing that says no parking or private property,” Tackett added. “Nothing.”

The new Lynnwood City Center Light Rail station has a parking lot that fits 1,900 cars, but it fills up very quickly. Tackett and many others had to pay $400-650 to get their vehicles back.

“Everybody was doing the exact same thing, all of us Mariners fans walking across the street back to the transit center to step on the light rail to get down to Seattle,” Tackett said. “So we parked and then we came back after the game, and the lot was almost empty.”

Gee sides with towing companies

“I just want to say, if my kid had that happen to him, and he’s like, ‘Dad, I can’t believe this happened,’ I would say, as a parent, ‘Well, technically, you parked on someone’s private property,'” KIRO host Gee Scott said. “I know I sound like a jerk.”

“People have parked there for months with no issue,” Andrew Lanier, the producer of “The Gee and Ursula Show,” said. “There is not adequate space at light rail. Period. This is an issue at every single light rail station.”

Tackett revealed to the show that she intends to fight the fine in court.

“You can’t give them the broom to hit you with,” Gee responded. “Ursula, let’s say you’re the owner of this tow company. Hear me out. The [property] owner calls Ursula’s tow company. ‘Hey, Ursula, I need you to come get all of these cars.’ My question to you, Ursula, is, do you say, ‘I’m sorry, Mr. Owner. I will not be doing that because I think that those people are enjoying themselves at the game, and it’s just not right.’ Do you take your business elsewhere? Is that what you do?”

“You know the answer is going to be no, but I probably wouldn’t get into that business, and maybe I wouldn’t be looking for those opportunities to really stick it to them,” Ursula responded.

A 4-year-old child was found dead in an apartment building in North Seattle Thursday afternoon, the Seattle Police Department reported.

A 4-year-old child was found dead in an apartment building in North Seattle Thursday afternoon, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) reported.

Patrol officers with the SPD were called to respond to reports of a possible suicidal person in an apartment building on the 6600 block of Roosevelt Way N.E. When the officer arrived, they found a woman having an alleged behavioral health crisis and an unresponsive child.

“Police began emergency life-saving measures. The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) arrived and continued life-saving care,” SPD stated in its crime blotter. “Despite all life-saving efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries, and SFD pronounced him deceased at the scene.”

The suspect, a 45-year-old woman, was taken into custody and booked into King County Jail without incident. It was confirmed by SPD that the suspect arrested was the deceased child’s mother.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to determine the cause of death of the 4-year-old, while SPD’s homicide unit is leading the investigation examining the child’s death.
