Public Health – Seattle & King County has confirmed a measles case in an adult resident who may have exposed others to the virus at several public locations across Renton, Tukwila, and Kent.

The individual is believed to have contracted measles while on the same flight as another confirmed case announced by Public Health on Oct. 17.

This latest case marks the 12th measles infection among Washington residents in 2025.

Health officials said the patient visited several public sites during the infectious period, including Toyota of Renton, Valley Medical Center, YangGuoFu Malatang Restaurant in Tukwila, and the Disney on Ice: Let’s Dance event at Kent’s ShoWare Center.

“This individual had been vaccinated against measles,” said Dr. Sandra J. Valenciano, Health Officer for Public Health – Seattle & King County. “While it’s possible for someone who’s been vaccinated to get measles, it’s rare. Vaccinated people who get measles are generally less likely to spread it to others and less likely to have severe outcomes. The measles vaccine remains a very effective tool and has been safely used for over 50 years.”

National data show that 92% of measles cases this year have occurred in unvaccinated individuals, with just 4% in people who have received both recommended doses of the MMR vaccine.

Health officials warn that measles can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a location.

Public Health advises that most people are already immune due to vaccination, meaning the risk to the general public remains low.

However, those who may have been exposed should:

Verify their vaccination history or prior measles infection.

Contact a healthcare provider immediately if they develop a fever, rash, cough, or red eyes. (Call ahead before visiting to prevent possible exposure to others.)

Limit contact with people who may not have immunity, especially infants, pregnant people, and those with compromised immune systems.

Those at highest risk for complications include children under 5, adults over 20, pregnant people, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Deputies were dispatched at around 1 p.m., where as many as seven people were found trapped underneath the tree.

Three of them were taken to the hospital.

A man in his 30s was confirmed dead and multiple people were injured, ranging from severe to minor injuries, PCSO said.

Jazzmyn Soldonia was with her 12-year-old niece when she heard the noise.

“There was a gust of wind, then we heard what sounded like thunder.” Soldonia said, “I was trying to stay calm for my niece, trying to get kids into a safe place and get the kids separated because we heard they had found somebody.”

Soldonia says she tried to look for people pinned under the tree.

“I’m hurting. I have some good scrapes, cuts and bruises. I am very overwhelmed. I want to go home and hug my babies,” she said.

Savannah Davitt says she heard one branch come down, then heard the crack as the whole tree fell.

One branch crushed her booth moments after she stepped outside for the first time for the day.

The tree smashed the booth right next to her.

“Other people weren’t so lucky today and it’s crazy to think that could have been me,” Davitt said.

One year later, explore the implications of the Fall City teen's murder charge and what lies ahead for the community and legal system.

Today marks one year since King County prosecutors say a 15-year-old boy shot and killed his five family members in Fall City.

The court case is in a holding pattern as attorneys decide whether to try him as an adult or a juvenile. That determines how long he is legally allowed to serve in prison if convicted.

They have been trying to make that decision since last year, but a hearing to determine the final ruling keeps getting pushed back.

On October 21, 2024, prosecutors say the 15-year-old, who we are not naming due to age, took his dad’s gun, then shot his parents and three siblings in the head, killing them.

They say he also shot his other sister in the neck, but she played dead and was able to run to a neighbor’s house for help.

Investigators say the teen killed the family, then staged the scene to make it look like his dead brother did it, took a shower, changed his clothes, and called 911.

The surviving sibling told police that it wasn’t true, naming her 15-year-old brother as the shooter.

Fast forward a year, and that teen is still in jail waiting to find out what happens with the impending trial.

The case also can’t move on until psych evaluations are done, but the defense says they are having trouble getting witnesses to interview due to the intensity of the situation.

In July, the defense asked to push the decline hearing until October 2026. This is when the court would determine whether the teen could be tried as an adult. The judge turned that down, saying the date was too far away.

Instead, that hearing was set for April 2026. The teen is expected back in court at least once before then on December 10.

According to the boy’s attorneys, he has no prior criminal history.

Amazon Web Services outage disrupts Ticketmaster, affecting Mariners-Blue Jays Game 7 ticket access and entry.

A widespread Amazon Web Services outage disrupted online services around the world Monday, including Ticketmaster systems relied upon for entry to Game 7 of the American League Championship Series between the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays, according to a statement from the Blue Jays.

“Ticketmaster is currently experiencing ticket management issues due to a larger Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage,” the team said Monday afternoon. “We are actively working with both groups to resolve the issue as soon as possible and will share an update in the coming hours. Please check back soon for the latest updates and hold off on managing your tickets as we work through this.”

KIRO 7 News has reached out to the Seattle Mariners to ask if they are having similar issues regarding the scheduled watch party at T-Mobile Park tonight. We also reached out to the Seahawks regarding tonight’s Monday Night Football game at Lumen Field.

The cloud computing outage began early Monday morning and temporarily affected some of the internet’s largest platforms — including Ticketmaster, which depends on AWS infrastructure.

Fans attempting to access their mobile tickets for the decisive Game 7 at Rogers Centre reported error messages and blank screens when trying to retrieve barcodes.

By midday, Amazon said it was seeing “recovery across most of the affected services,” though some users continued to experience delays.

The company attributed the issue to its domain name system, which translates website names into the numeric IP addresses that computers use to connect online.

The outage caused ripple effects across industries — disrupting apps and websites like Netflix, Disney+, Coinbase, and even Amazon’s own Ring and Alexa devices.

Downdetector, a site that tracks service disruptions, said it received more than 11 million user reports across 2,500 companies.

Cybersecurity experts said the incident underscored the world’s heavy reliance on a few cloud providers for essential online infrastructure.

“The world now runs on the cloud,” said Patrick Burgess of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. “When there’s an issue like this, it can be really impactful.”

For baseball fans, the outage could mean last-minute confusion at the turnstiles before first pitch in Toronto.

While no delays to the game itself were announced, Ticketmaster advised customers not to attempt changes or transfers until systems were fully restored.

Amazon said engineers were continuing to implement fixes and expected “a full resolution” within hours.

The AWS outage marks the latest in a series of large-scale disruptions in recent years, with similar incidents in 2021 and 2023 affecting airlines, streaming platforms, and major retailers.

Monday’s issue comes on one of Major League Baseball’s most-watched nights of the year — a deciding game that will send either the Mariners or Blue Jays to the World Series.

Businesses around T-Mobile Park are experiencing record-breaking sales as tens of thousands of fans flock to SODO during the Seattle Mariners’ postseason.

Local establishments are seeing a surge in demand, with sales at the Beer Hall doubling on game days.

The influx of fans is prompting businesses to prepare extensively, from stocking up on kegs to organizing parking for employees.

“It’s an electric environment. You get to be kind of game day vibes, but not actually be in the stadium,” Juice Andrews, owner of The Hall Group, said.

“I don’t know where people are working or where their office is, but I think that there are some empty offices and I think we’ve got some full restaurants, which is pretty wonderful to see,” Michael Hursh, the director of operations at 13 Coins, said.

Juice Andrews reports that sales at The Hall Group increase by 200% on game days. Average beer sales for a day are around 300 per location. At the Occidental location, more than 2,500 cold ones were poured when both the Mariners and the Seahawks played earlier in the postseason run.

Hursh said that 13 Coins had its best Sunday on record.

“We’re just constantly staying on top of it,” Andrews said. “We’re meeting like every single morning and planning and logistics.”

After the 15-inning marathon to advance from the ALDS, a special guest visited 13 Coins. A manager first thought someone was defacing the mural the restaurant has of Seattle history. It turns out, Ken Griffey Jr. saw his picture from one of the playoff runs he was a part of and decided to customize the tribute.

“He just took it upon himself to not only get a little bit of food but sign the wall where his picture is up,” Hursh said.

For Juice Andrews, the season isn’t just about his business; it is personal. As the Mariners started the season in May, he watched his mother’s final game with her before she passed. He went to Game 3 of the ALCS with his wife, who was wearing his mother’s Mariners jacket.

“I wish she were here with me, but it’s really special just to see this happening and knowing that she’s looking from above and helping us through this next push, hopefully, all the way to the World Series,” Andrews said.

KIRO 7 reporter Deborah Horne will retire on Oct. 8 after more than three decades of reporting in the Pacific Northwest.

Deborah began her career as a newspaper journalist before moving into broadcast.

She spent 10 years in Providence, Rhode Island, before joining KIRO 7 in Seattle, where she has worked for the past 34 years.

Follow this link to read additional stories from KIRO 7

Over that time, she has won multiple awards, including regional Emmy Awards, a Gracie Award for Outstanding Local Reporter, and induction into the Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Northwest Chapter.

Her reporting style was marked by fearlessness and empathy, often elevating voices from people living on society’s margins while holding government officials accountable.

Colleagues describe her as regal, commanding, and passionate, with a booming laugh and a willingness to chase stories wherever they led.

Throughout her career, Deborah interviewed a wide range of people — from unhoused residents of Seattle to civil rights icon Rosa Parks.

She once recounted her regret in not fully grasping the weight of her conversation with Parks at the time, a lesson that deepened her approach to storytelling.

Another favorite story came from her early years in Rhode Island, when a group of women staged a strike against their husbands, demanding attention at home.

In addition to her reporting, Horne briefly stepped into Hollywood.

She appeared alongside Robin Williams in the 2009 film World’s Greatest Dad, playing Dr. Dana, a television talk show host.

Deborah has spoken openly about the challenges she faced as a Black woman entering journalism during the civil rights era.

Follow this link to read additional stories from KIRO 7

She graduated as valedictorian of her Virginia high school in 1971, navigating prejudice from both Black and white classmates.

Those experiences, she has said, shaped the resilience that carried her through a demanding career in journalism.

In reflecting on her work, Horne has said her goal was always to “shine a light on places where the light has not shown” and to tell stories that connect people across divides.

Convicted rapist Kevin Coe, known as the ‘South Hill Rapist,’ is now living in Auburn, according to records from the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Coe, 78, registered as a Level 3 sex offender at a home on 15th Street Southeast in Auburn, after plans to place him in Federal Way received pushback.

He is known as Spokane’s “South Hill Rapist.” Coe was released last week by the Spokane County Superior Court after being deemed no longer a sexually violent predator.

“It puts us on guard,” Daryl, a resident of Auburn, said. “I don’t know who decided to put him that close.”

It’s too close for comfort for neighbors who say they were shocked to find out Coe is living just a few homes away.

“I was already concerned that he was going to be in Federal Way… now he’s on my block, actually,” Angel Moran, another Auburn resident, said. “It’s something really concerning.”

“I heard he was going to Federal Way. I did not hear he was coming to the city limits of Auburn,” Patty, a neighbor, said, expressing her surprise. “And I’m just not very happy about it.”

The city of Auburn told KIRO 7 they had no prior knowledge or communication that Coe would be moving into a home there.

Coe was found guilty in one rape case but is suspected of being linked to more than 40 others in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His alleged victims were between 15 and 51 years old.

His presence in the neighborhood has raised concerns among residents about safety, particularly for children.

“They got little ones across the street,” Daryl added. “They got little ones out down the street, you know? We don’t need that here.”

“This is a really peaceful neighborhood, to be honest,” Moran added. “We just have our kids walk into the bus stations and stuff without any problems. But now knowing that’s actually an issue, it’s a little concerning.”

Auburn Police have stated they will conduct check-ins with Coe to ensure he remains at the registered address.

“I’m really on guard. I mean, you’ve got to put them somewhere,” Daryl said. “I think jail is a good place for him.”

At around 5:30 p.m., crews responded to the crash in the Wallingford neighborhood near Meridian Avenue N. and N. 40th Street.

A couple in their 40s driving a minivan with two young girls, aged 7 and 10, had allegedly been hit by a man driving the SUV, according to SPD.

Police said the two cars were at an impasse because of the narrow roadway while driving on Meridian Avenue N.

The driver of the van reportedly tried to find a place to pull over, but said the man in the SUV became angry, flipped them off, and allegedly rammed into the front of their van.

Seattle police said the impact caused the van to catch fire, but the family of four was not injured.

The driver of the SUV was arrested at the scene without incident and was booked into the King County Jail, charged with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon and property destruction, according to SPD.

According to UW, the man entered the classroom during a lecture, interrupted the session by making Nazi salutes, and shouted insults at both the instructor and students.

Video posted online shows several dozen students and the instructor following him out of the lecture hall and chase him toward Drumheller fountain.

The group huddled around the man until University of Washington Police officers arrived and took him into custody.

The university said the case is still under investigation, but criminal charges are expected to be referred to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

UW said it is “committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment and will continue to do everything possible to ensure our community’s safety.”

South Sound ranches are losing thousands of dollars to a unique crime: thieves ordering up hundreds of bales of hay, only for the charges to be reported as fraud.

South Sound ranches are losing thousands of dollars to a unique crime: thieves ordering up hundreds of bales of hay, only for the charges to be reported as fraud.

It started like any other at Kimball’s Ranch in Yelm. A new client began ordering truckloads of hay on a credit card.

“We delivered about 460 bales,” Stephanie Kimball said.

Follow this link to read additional stories from KIRO 7

The ranch has been in her family for generations. It’s a labor of love.

Crews with the ranch made about four deliveries before getting an unusual call: the charges had been labeled as fraud.

Between product, delivery, and labor, the ranch was out around $10,000.

“A small farming business, it’s a large impact for us,” she said.

Kimball’s Ranch wasn’t the only one targeted.

“Everything was checking out really nice,” Jacob Moody with EPH Hay & Cattle said. “It looked like we were going to get a new customer.”

In total, EPH Hay & Cattle lost about $24,000 in a similar scam.

Both Moody and Kimball were alerted to photos on Facebook that matched photos their own employees had taken. In one shot, you could see a Kimball’s Ranch truck (covered by a drawing of a horse). They believe the thieves took the product and attempted to sell it online.

“You see that he’s selling it for $10 a bail,” Moody said.

Thurston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to KIRO 7 it was investigating the case.

“Everyone that is affected by this is a family-run business, and there’s already enough like pressure on family-run businesses,” Moody said. “You do this and like that directly affects, you know, our kids. Like that takes food out of their mouths.”

“Our best thing we can do is try and get the word out to everybody else,” Kimball said. “And hope that someone brings these people down because it’s stealing. It’s not right.”

Co-ringleader arrested in Rainier Beach home amid illegal grow operation investigation.

The suspected co-ringleader of an illegal marijuana grow operation was arrested in her Rainier Beach home.

In all, five people were arrested, including a woman and her husband, also described as the “co-ringleaders.”

Coordinated arrests went down early Wednesday morning in Seattle, Federal Way, Tacoma, and Lakewood.

Neighbors say they long suspected something illegal was going on there. For one thing, they could smell it.

Lakewood Police began investigating complaints about this house back in 2021. The investigation languished until last June, leading to the boarded-up windows.

“At 4:20, we saw spotlights and heard ‘8-3-1-9, come out with your hands up,’” that was the early morning wakeup call on Wednesday morning for Toni Porturas and her neighbors around Maybelle Lane Southwest.

“I have pictures of them,” said Porturas. “They’re backing out of the house, the cops have their guns drawn.”

She saw 56-year-old Hui Chen, identified as a ringleader, and another alleged accomplice.

That scene was repeated at three different homes in two counties early Wednesday morning.

A reported 11 state and local agencies from Pierce and King Counties, led by Lakewood Police, moved in to break up what they say was an organized illegal marijuana grow operation.

Chen’s wife, 65-year-old Eileen Hy, also described as a ringleader, was arrested in Seattle at their Rainier Beach home with the Lake Washington view.

Were you surprised? A neighbor was asked.

“Yeah, yeah,” said the neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous. “They were very quiet people down there.”

Did he have any inkling they were growing marijuana?

“None at all,” he said.

The couple came to the attention of law enforcement back in 2018 when the house they owned in Federal Way caught fire, exposing a marijuana grow operation. It was there that, last week, two additional accomplices were taken into custody.

Toni Porturas says the state needs stiffer laws to combat this.

“If I want to put a storage shed in my yard,” said Porturas, “I’ve got to get a permit from the city of Lakewood. How about a grow operation? So, I don’t know what else to say.”

She and other neighbors say some people showed up here Saturday and cleared more stuff out of the house with the help of Lakewood police, even though neighbors were told this remains a crime scene.

According to the Pierce County jail roster, all five people have bailed out.

Following a Tuesday night victory that clinched a playoff berth, MVP candidate Raleigh addressed the crowd and created one of the hottest-selling merchandise items for M’s fans.

The Seattle Mariners are back in the postseason for the first time since 2022.

Additionally, for the first time in nearly a quarter century, the Mariners are champions of the American League West, clinching the division title after a 9-2 win over the Colorado Rockies that saw five home runs hit by M’s players — including two by catcher Cal Raleigh, pushing his season total to 60.

But before the division was clinched, when the Mariners pulled off a dramatic, come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Rockies Tuesday night to seal the team’s playoff spot, MVP candidate Raleigh addressed the crowd and created one of the hottest-selling merchandise items for M’s fans.

“Might as well go win the whole f****** thing,” Raleigh told the crowd.

The line is a reference to the movie ‘Major League.’

Simply Seattle has already created T-shirts of that quote, and VP Jake Smidt said it’s arguably one of their best-selling shirts they have.

It seemed everyone in the crowd enjoyed Cal’s unfiltered moment, including his own dad, Todd Raleigh.

“I was standing next to his mother and ‘did he just say that?’ And she’s like ‘yes.’ So, the old Major League Jake Taylor … you know … I guess considering everything that has gone into it. So, I thought, ‘yeah, it’s ok.’ We will have to talk to him about cleaning that up a little bit. I thought for the moment and everything, it was pretty good actually,” Todd Raleigh said.

During our conversation with him, Raleigh said watching his son’s historic season has really been one to remember.

“It hasn’t really sunk in, though. When you hear about Johnny Bench, Micky Mantle, Ken Griffey Jr, you’re like, ‘those guys are great players.’ Cal is just Cal. I guess I haven’t quite processed it. I try to enjoy the journey as much as possible,” he said. “But it’s been so great and the fact that they are winning on top of that and the games are meaningful and he’s happy,” he continued.

He said that they have been there for Cal through the highest of highs and lowest of lows, and that they will always support their son.

“I can’t miss this. I’ve worked my whole life for this stuff. There’s nothing like playoff baseball. I’m not going to miss it,” he said.

Some MLB fans have arrived at ballparks this month to discover their digital tickets missing and already resold on platforms such as SeatGeek and StubHub.

Some Major League Baseball fans have arrived at ballparks this month to discover their digital tickets missing and already resold on platforms such as SeatGeek and StubHub, according to The New York Times.

In a statement to The Athletic, MLB said scammers gained access to fans’ tickets through the Ballpark app, which is used by all 30 teams, including the Seattle Mariners.

The league stressed that the system itself was not breached, but “bad actors” obtained or guessed fans’ login information from other compromised websites.

Follow this link to read additional stories from KIRO 7

“The Ballpark app is operating properly and continues to process tickets for millions of fans who attend MLB games. There is no evidence that this was a breach of the MLB system,” the league said. “Bad actors then have utilized leaked or stolen credentials from other websites in efforts to access the accounts of MLB fans.”

The issue began surfacing around Labor Day, according to a league source familiar with the situation, who was not authorized to speak publicly. MLB has not said how many fans have been affected.

Boston Red Sox fan Nancy Morrisroe said she was locked out of her seats for a September game against the Pittsburgh Pirates despite confirming them on her Ballpark app before leaving home.

By the time she walked the half-hour to Fenway Park, the tickets had vanished.

“I get into the box office, and it was so many people in there saying, ‘I just bought them off of StubHub, I just bought them!’” Morrisroe said.

She described the experience as “incredibly vulnerable” and said her call to MLB’s customer service line over Labor Day weekend took more than an hour.

Morrisroe, a season-ticket holder since 2007, eventually received seats for the game. But she said she continued having trouble with the app even after changing her password.

“There needs to be two-factor authentication (when transferring tickets) or something,” she said. “There needs to be some sort of safeguard … Now we’re going to be going into the postseason with a lot of money involved.”

Discussions about the problem have spread online.

One Reddit thread had 78 comments as of Friday morning, including screenshots that appeared to show the New York Mets warning fans about “unrecognized transactions.”

The Mets did not respond to The Athletic’s request for comment.

Fans with tickets to games involving large-market clubs such as the Red Sox and Mets appear to be more common targets, according to the league official, because those tickets typically fetch higher resale prices.

StubHub did not reply to multiple requests for comment.

SeatGeek said only that it could not comment while investigations are ongoing.

MLB is urging fans to take immediate precautions. The league advised users to reset their passwords with something new and unique, to log out of all MLB applications, and then log back in with the updated password before leaving for a game.

“We are working tirelessly to address this matter and protect our fans,” MLB said in its statement. “We want all of our fans to have a great experience when they come to the ballpark and we are sorry that some fans have had to deal with an issue related to their tickets.”

The league has promoted its Ballpark app as a success story in recent years.

In 2022, MLB said 32 million tickets were scanned through the app, with 99.5% of fans retrieving tickets successfully, up from 85% in 2021.

Parents at Jennie Reed Elementary School in Tacoma say they are concerned following a fight outside of the school on Monday.

Parents at Jennie Reed Elementary in Tacoma are frustrated after police say a person approached cars outside the school and started a fight with a parent.

Parents claim the district never notified them about it after.

The incident occurred on Monday. During a fight with a parent, teachers say the suspect reportedly threatened to ‘get their child’ and was punched by the parent before leaving the scene.

“Why isn’t my school notifying me that this is happening, so that way we can address it appropriately?” said Stephenie Troftgruben, a district parent.

“It worries me, because at the end of the day, my child goes to the school,” another parent told KIRO 7. “I need to make sure that my child is safe at all times.”

On Tuesday, police reported an unrelated fist fight a few blocks from the campus, where a gun was mentioned but not seen. Parents said they were not informed about this incident either.

Parents said they learned of the incidents after campus staff members were sent an email that week.

Tacoma Public Schools deployed district staff to cover the shortages and maintain school operations.

TPS is conducting an internal investigation into the sickout, which could result in job losses and affect teaching certificates.

The Seattle Public Schools Board has postponed its decision on whether to reintroduce police officers to Garfield High School.

The Seattle Public Schools Board has postponed its decision on whether to reintroduce police officers to Garfield High School.

On Wednesday, the board decided to delay the vote to make the pilot program’s language clearer about the officers’ roles.

Some parents and students spoke in support of the proposed one-year pilot program with Seattle police. It aims to bring a School Engagement Officer (SEO) to the campus to build relationships and respond to emergencies.

“We have been ignored and silenced,” Rilan Springer, a former Garfield student, said. “There’s been no action so far to do anything to stop gun violence. Garfield’s kids are in danger every single day they go to school.”

Students made their case to district officials about the need for SEOs.

“I know that we need safety in our school because not only have I seen students hurting each other. I’ve seen an adult hurting students,” student Jade Warren said.

The district removed School Resource Officers (SROs) district-wide in 2020, and if they return, they will not be involved in school discipline and will not wear police uniforms.

“We need SROs in our school and we need police in our school, but we cannot accept the racist police officers and misogynistic police officers those who wish to hurt us,” Warren added.

Michelle Sarju, a Seattle school board director, highlighted the need for more information before moving forward with the pilot, “Back this up with effective research because at the end of this what we want to know — is this beneficial for students?”

Dr. Tarance Hart, the principal of Garfield High School, expressed support for the pilot program but urged for a timely decision, stating, “I want the pilot to sort of tell us a lot about what it can look like or and perhaps we find that this is not right for Garfield at the moment.”

The board has unanimously voted to postpone the decision until their next meeting on October 8th, with the possibility of an earlier vote if a special meeting is convened.
