Utility crews are out in full force this weekend, working to restore power to more than 150,000 thousand homes and businesses

UPDATE AS OF 2:30 P.M. SUNDAY: Crews have put in long hours overnight and through the day Sunday to restore power to thousands of Puget Sound residents.

The latest numbers of power outages as of Sunday afternoon, reported by local utilities:

Puget Sound Energy: 94,000

Snohomish PUD: 1,500

Seattle City Light: 1,300

Tacoma Public Utilities: 10

Previous story:

Utility crews are out in full force this weekend, working to restore power to more than 150,000 homes and businesses after a powerful windstorm knocked down trees throughout the region.

Many of those trees fell onto power lines, knocking out electricity to customers Saturday night and Sunday morning.

The winds are a bit calmer after the storm blew through.

But a wind advisory is still in effect on SR 16 near the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

So lots of people are surveying damage from the wind, or perhaps chasing their Halloween decorations or garbage cans down the block, after those high winds.

Puget Sound Energy is dealing with the most outages, as more than 138,000 customers are in the dark as of 8:00 a.m. Sunday.

Seattle City Light reports about 5,600 outages, while the Snohomish PUD has about 3,100, and Tacoma Public Utilities has about 350.

Many roads were closed due to fallen trees.

Around 6:00 a.m., crews cleared a fallen tree from U.S. 101 at Green Ridge Drive.

But other problem areas include trees down on U.S. 12 at Anderson Road S.W., SR 702 at Christiansen Muck Rd., SR 702 from SR 7, and Tanwax Boulevard from SR 7.

Traffic is moving smoothly once again on southbound I-5 at just north of the N.E. 50th exit, after a tree fell across two lanes of the freeway near the U-District Saturday night.

The fallen tree landed in the two right lanes of the freeway’s southbound lanes, causing backups for drivers headed into Seattle from the north end around 11:00 p.m.

But the winds are now dying down, and some relief may be in sight.

Forecasters said Sunday will be a wet and rainy day, but the high winds have calmed in most areas.

We are expecting cloudy skies and a lot more rain, with nearly a half inch expected Sunday, with highs near 48 degrees.

Winds will still be breezy, but at just five-to-ten miles an hour.

Sunday night, expect light rain, decreasing clouds, and overnight lows near 43 degrees.

Monday is expected to be partly cloudy and around 55 degrees.

Bicyclists have a new, safer way to pedal into downtown Seattle from the south end.

Bicyclists have a new, safer way to pedal into downtown Seattle from the south end.

On Saturday morning, the city celebrated the opening of a new bike trail with a ribbon cutting along E. Marginal Way S.

The brand new path completely separates bike traffic from the big rigs that use that road.

It stretches for about 1.5 miles, from Spokane Street to the downtown waterfront, an area heavily used by freight trucks on their way to Port of Seattle.

Construction on the $72 million dollar project began a year and a half ago.

The two-way protected bike lane has been open for a couple of weeks.

It was unveiled October 9th.

Five days later, the city reopened E. Marginal Way S. to two-way traffic, after months of construction.

Construction crews are still busy working on a segment of the bike lane south of S. Horton St., on the east side of E. Marginal Way S.

While that work continues, bicyclists can use the shared path on the west side of the street between S. Spokane St and S. Horton St.

Heading north into downtown Seattle, they can then connect to the new two-way bike lane using a new crossing at S. Horton St.

The city has published a map on its website outlining the new detour that links to the new protected bike trail:

(Diagram provided by Seattle Department of Transportation.)

The East Marginal Way Corridor Improvement Project runs along E. Marginal Way S. from S. Atlantic St. to 1st Ave. S.

It is comprised of three sections: north, central and south.

The new bike trail is part of the north segment.

The central segment will eventually add a new shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists south of S. Spokane St., to Diagonal Ave. S.

Because space is limited there, the path will begin on the east side of the street.

Users will then have to cross the street at a crosswalk, and move to the west side.

The south section of the project is currently still being designed.

City officials are also still working to identify funding sources.

It is expected to include improvements from Diagonal Ave. S. to the First Ave. S. Bridge, that could include pedestrian improvements at traffic signals and bus stops, construction of missing sidewalks, and better pedestrian and bicyclist connectivity to the 1st Ave. S. bridge.

The funding of the current improvements came from the nine-year “Levy to Move Seattle,” approved by voters in 2015, as well as other local, state, and federal funding sources.

A tragic accident on SR 99 left one teen dead and three injured. SPD seeks answers in this devastating incident.

Officers are investigating after a terrible crash in Seattle on a freeway off-ramp from Highway 99 killed one person and left three others hurt.

Just after 10:00 p.m. Saturday, police said a 16-year-old girl was behind the wheel of a vehicle exiting southbound State Route 99 (SR 99) onto the ramp that drops down to Harbor Island.

Investigators don’t know exactly why, but said the vehicle slammed into a concrete barrier, and then the car went flying off the ramp. They say it plunged 80 feet to the ground, landing upside down on East Marginal Way.

“The vehicle had exited southbound SR 99 at Harbor Avenue and struck the ramp barrier and then plunged about 80 feet to the street below,” Seattle Police Department (SPD) Detective Brian Pritchard said.

Teen boy dies after car plunges off SR 99

The impact ejected a teen boy. Medics transported him to Harborview Medical Center, but he did not survive his injuries.

The driver was trapped in the wreckage. Fire crews eventually got her out.

Two other teen boys got out of the vehicle on their own, with serious injuries.

The three survivors are in either critical or serious condition at Harborview.

The Seattle Police Department’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) is investigating whether the crash was due to high speed, impairment, or if the wet weather played a role.

“Investigators are looking at whether it was speed, whether it was impairment, or weather played a role in the accident,” Pritchard said.

If you have any additional information about the crash or the vehicle’s occupants, you’re asked to call TCIS at (206) 684-8923.

Police say a woman was killed when she was struck by a train near downtown Puyallup early Saturday morning.

Police say a woman was killed when she was struck by a train near downtown Puyallup early Saturday morning.

The collision happened on tracks that cross over N. Meridian Ave., just north of E. Main St.

It’s unclear why the woman was on the train tracks.

Police say the victim appeared to be in her early 50s.

“It’s still being investigated as to who that person is, and we don’t have an i-d on anybody yet,” said Puyallup Police Capt. Kevin Gill.”

The Metro Cities Major Collision Response Team is investigating.

The train came to a stop after hitting the woman, then remained there for several hours.

That blocked several intersections for drivers for most of the morning, Saturday.

The tracks were blocked to vehicular traffic at 5th St., 7th St. and Meridian Ave. during the investigation.

Those intersections were reopened by about 11 a.m. Saturday.

Investigators want to talk to anyone who may have seen what happened.

They are also trying to find any video of the woman prior to, and leading up to, the incident.

“We’re still canvassing for witnesses,” Gill said. “There was a witness on the train. We have to speak to the conductor. If we can review engine video, we’re going to do that as well.”

It’s unclear how fast the train was traveling before it hit the woman.

“The railroad sets their own speed limit, so I can’t speak to how fast the train was going,” Gill said.

Pierce County deputies were involved in a shootout with a domestic violence suspect at a home on Puyallup's South Hill Sunday.

Pierce County deputies were involved in a shootout with a domestic violence suspect at a home on Puyallup’s South Hill Sunday.

Deputies were initially called to respond to reports of gunfire after a 45-year-old suspect allegedly fired shots and threatened three others at a home about a mile south of Puyallup’s South Hill Mall. The home is located on 106th Ave. Ct. E., just east of Meridian Ave.

“There was a woman and two children at the home who had fled the home out of the back window,” Pierce County Sheriff’s Spokesperson Carly Cappetto said.

The woman, 45, was slightly hurt while escaping. Neighboring houses had to be evacuated due to the danger of stray bullets flying in their direction.

Disturbance becomes an officer-involved shooting

When deputies arrived, there was another exchange of gunfire. At least one deputy fired their service weapon.

The suspect eventually came out. He was injured, but the extent of his injuries is currently unknown, as of this reporting. It’s unclear whether he suffered a gunshot wound.

After he’s released from the hospital, he’ll be booked into Pierce County Jail.

The independent Pierce County Force Investigation Team, comprised of law enforcement personnel from other nearby cities, will take over the investigation into this officer-involved shooting.

It has been an unusually violent weekend for deputies in Pierce County for the last several days, but Cappetto can’t put her finger on the exact reason for so many weapons-related calls.

On Thursday, deputies found a couple dead from gunshot wounds in a bedroom of their Spanaway home, and a 14-year-old girl hiding in another bedroom. Friday night in Parkland, investigators believe a 41-year-old man suffering from mental health issues shot and killed his 63-year-old father.

And there was a succession of domestic violence incidents on Sunday.

“I can’t say why today, particularly, has been a domestic violence type of day,” Cappetto said. “Today, we’ve had three domestic violence calls on the board, all involving weapons. Obviously, this one (the Puyallup shooting) was the most serious, but we have resources being pulled in all different directions. We really do encourage people to get the help they need, and to think about the decisions they are making, and step away from situations when they escalate like this.”

Seattle police say a man struck and killed by a car Friday night was lying in the road, next to a very busy intersection.

Detectives with the police department’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad are still trying to figure out why he was lying in the roadway.

They say around 10:45 p.m., 911 dispatchers received reports about a car-versus-pedestrian collision.

Police say it involved a 31-year-old man.

Investigators say a person lying in the road was hit near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Way S. and Rainier Ave. S., one of the busiest intersections in the city of Seattle.

A Seattle Fire crew arrived and medics started providing medical attention to the victim.

Despite efforts to save the his life, he did not survive.

Medics pronounced him deceased at the scene.

Seattle officers condoned off the area so that investigators could begin processing evidence from the crash area.

Detectives believe the car that hit the man was on MLK Jr. Way S., headed in the southbound direction.

They say it appears the driver fatally struck the victim after driving across all six lanes of Rainier Ave. S.

The driver was cooperative with police investigators.

Police evaluated him and found no evidence he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Officers did not arrest the driver.

Authorities say the King County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on the victim’s body to determine the cause and manner of death.

Officials have not released the identity of the man killed.

Police are asking anyone with information about what happened or who was a witness to the fatal collision, to call the Seattle Police Department’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad, at (206) 684-8923.

Deputies responded around 8:00 p.m., to a home on 142nd St. Ct. S. near C St. S., about a block north of the Sprinker Recreation Center.

When they arrived, they found a wounded victim and quickly got him safely outside the home.

Officers attempted to give him first aid to try to save his life, but the 63-year-old man did not survive.

The man’s son, 41, was also inside the home.

Deputies say the son fled into a bedroom and barricaded himself.

Eventually, he gave himself up.

“After about 20 minutes of negotiating with the suspect, the son came out of the bedroom and was taken into custody,” said Pierce County Sheriff’s Spokesperson Carly Cappetto, in a released audio statement.

Officers immediately took him into custody.

“There does appear to be a mental health component for the suspect and detectives are investigating what led up to the incident,” Cappetto said.

President Donald Trump is sending 300 California National Guard members to Oregon after a judge temporarily blocked his administration from deploying that state’s guard to Portland, California’s governor said Sunday.

President Donald Trump is sending 300 California National Guard members to Oregon after a judge temporarily blocked his administration from deploying that state’s guard to Portland, California’s governor said Sunday.

Gov. Gavin Newsom pledged Sunday to fight the move in court.

There was no immediate official announcement from Washington that the California National Guard was being called up and sent to Oregon, just as was the case when Illinois’s governor made a similar announcement Saturday about troops in his state being activated.

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said that 101 California National Guard members arrived in her state Saturday night by plane and more were on the way. Kotek said there has been no formal communication with the federal government about the deployment.

“This action appears to (be) intentional to circumvent yesterday’s ruling by a federal judge,” Kotek said in a statement Sunday. “There is no need for military intervention in Oregon. There is no insurrection in Portland. No threat to national security. Oregon is our home, not a military target.”

A Portland Police spokesperson declined to comment on whether California National Guard members were already in the city. A spokesperson for Kotek said Sunday he could not verify the current location of the Guard members who arrived in Oregon on Saturday, directing questions to the Defense Department. A department spokesperson declined to comment. There was no immediate comment from the White House.

Newsom, a Democrat, said in a statement that California personnel were on their way Sunday and called the deployment “a breathtaking abuse of the law and power.” He said these troops were “federalized” and put under the president’s control months ago over his objections, in response to unrest in Los Angeles.

“The commander-in-chief is using the U.S. military as a political weapon against American citizens,” Newsom said. “We will take this fight to court, but the public cannot stay silent in the face of such reckless and authoritarian conduct by the president of the United States.”

A Trump-appointed federal judge in Oregon on Saturday temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s plan to deploy the Oregon National Guard in Portland to protect federal property amid protests after Trump called the city “war-ravaged.” Oregon officials and Portland residents alike said that description was ludicrous.

U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut, who was appointed by Trump during his first term, issued the order pending further arguments in the lawsuit. She said the relatively small protests the city has seen did not justify the use of federalized forces and allowing the deployment could harm Oregon’s state sovereignty.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said Sunday that the city continues to seek legal means to halt any National Guard deployment.

“This action circumvents the court’s decision and threatens to inflame a community that has remained peaceful,” Wilson said. “Our legal team is coordinating with our partners and will immediately pursue all lawful steps to enforce the judge’s order and protect Portlanders’ rights.”

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in Portland has recently been the site of nightly protests.

Trump has characterized both Portland and Chicago as cities rife with crime and unrest, calling the former a “war zone” and suggesting apocalyptic force was needed to quell problems in the latter. Since the start of his second term, he has sent or talked about sending troops to 10 cities.

Trump authorized the deployment of 300 Illinois National Guard troops to protect federal officers and assets in Chicago on Saturday.

A road rage incident in north Seattle ended with a family of four having to escape their burning mini van.

A road rage incident in north Seattle ended with a family of four having to escape their burning mini van.

Police say an angry and hostile driver slammed his SUV into their van because the vehicle was blocking a narrow residential roadway and he couldn’t get through.

Around 5:30 Saturday night, near Meridian Ave. N. and N. 40th, the two vehicles both came to a stop, in a situation police called an “impasse”.

The family told officers when the driver of a Toyota 4 Runner couldn’t pass, they saw an irate driver through the windshield, visibly angry, yelling at them.

They say the exasperated driver threw up his hands, then flipped them off.

Even that adverse reaction from the annoyed driver couldn’t prepare the family for what happened next.

They say the 25-year-old driver then decided to gun it, ramming his expensive four-wheel-drive SUV, smack dab into the front end of their mini van.

The impact crunched the inside of their engine compartment like an accordion and ignited a fire.

Inside the smashed vehicle, a husband and wife and their two girls, ages ten and seven in booster seats, were suddenly horrified from the impact that had set their vehicle ablaze.

Luckily, they were able to quickly escape from the burning van and no one was seriously hurt.

When officers arrived they found the two vehicles in the middle of the roadway.

Police say the collision pushed the family’s van backwards.

The victims’ vehicle had significant front-end-collision damage and burn marks.

Firefighters said when they arrived the front of the van was engulfed in flames.

Fire crews sprayed foam on it to put out the fire.

The suspect’s Toyota sustained only minor damage.

Officers immediately arrested the suspect.

He did not put up a struggle.

The mother told police she was frightened at the thought of what else the enraged driver might do.

But investigators say the suspect did not interact in any way with the family after he rammed their van.

The mother says she told the suspect to stay at the scene and called 911.

Later, she told police she feared for her own life and for the safety of her two children.

A police report indicates she also told investigators she felt the other driver had struck their van “on purpose out of anger.”

Authorities say it’s likely the driver of the SUV will be charged with four counts of felony assault for using his vehicle as a deadly weapon.

He could also be charged with property destruction.

Police took the suspect into custody and booked him into the King County Jail.

Tow trucks hauled off both vehicles from the scene.

Seattle Police detectives in the Homicide and Assault Unit are still gathering details about the suspect, the apparent willful destruction, and the risk of injury he allegedly caused to others.

They’ll pass that information to prosecutors for possible criminal charges.

The Washington State Patrol says a multi-agency investigation into the sexual abuse and exploitation of children has resulted in the arrests of 13 people in Spokane County.

Officers made the arrests over several days.

The investigation focused on suspects accused of sexually abusing, or being involved in some way, in the exploitation of children in the Liberty Lake area, just east of Spokane.

The investigation, dubbed “Operation Liberty Lake” involved agents with the Department of Homeland Security, the Border Patrol, the FBI, and 13 other local police agencies.

The state patrol says more than 20 law enforcement officers, agents, and staff led to the success of the operation.

A total of 14 people were taken into custody, but one person was not arrested.

“Our detectives worked tirelessly with our local and federal partners to identify and arrest those who prey on the most vulnerable in our community,” said Chief John Batiste of the Washington State Patrol, in a released statement.

“Protecting children from exploitation is one of the most important responsibilities we have as law enforcement officers, and we will continue to pursue these offenders relentlessly,” he said.

The Spokane County prosecutor is reviewing the case for potential criminal charges.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Washington is also assisting in the investigation.

Most of the suspects live in, or near, Spokane or Spokane Valley.

Others have addresses in various cities in Washington and Idaho.

That includes the cities of Coeur d’ Alene, Sandpoint, Fernwood and Rathdrum, Idaho, as well as Chattaroy, Washington, just north of Spokane.

The suspects range in age from 21 to 64.

Officers arrested all 13 suspects in the last week.

“Protecting our community, especially our most vulnerable, from sexual predators is one of our highest priorities,” Liberty Lake Police Chief Damon Simmons said in a released statement.

He added that his city was proud to have hosted the operation, working with other local and federal agencies to make the arrests.

“This collaboration strengthens our ability to hold offenders accountable and keep our neighborhoods safe,” Simmons said.

The Spokane County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the Assistant United States Attorney are now reviewing the cases.

Those agencies will decide whether criminal charges will be filed against each individual.

The suspects in custody could face a number of charges, including rape of a child, communication with a minor for immoral purposes and sexual exploitation of a minor.

The state patrol’s Missing and Exploited Children Task Force (MECTF), led the investigation.

That agency is an affiliate of the Internet Crimes Against Children, a national network of law enforcement organizations that focuses on the use of technology to exploit children.

Investigators are still gathering information to assist prosecutors with filing charges.

Anyone with information that might help, or with knowledge about the identity of victims potentially involved, is asked to contact METCF at mectf@wsp.wa.gov.

The state patrol released the following list of local and federal agencies involved in the arrests:

• Washington State Patrol

• Homeland Security Investigations

• Benton County Sheriff’s Office

• Chelan County Sheriff’s Office

• Federal Bureau of Investigation

A gunman opened fire inside a Michigan church during Sunday services before apparently setting the building ablaze, killing at least one person and injuring nine before police shot him, authorities said

Hundreds of people were inside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township when a 40-year-old man rammed his vehicle into the front door, then exited the vehicle and started shooting, Police Chief William Renye told reporters.

The suspect is believed to have set the church on fire, Renye said. Flames and smoke could be seen for hours before the blaze was put out. First responders were then sifting through the wreckage.

“We do believe we will find some additional victims once we find the area where the fire was,” Renye said.

Scott Bennett, supervisor of Grand Blanc Township, said the shooting and fire is “a tragedy that nobody wants to encounter.”

Police said they did not yet have a motive for the fire or shooting.

The church, circled by a parking lot and a large lawn, is located near residential areas and a Jehovah’s Witness church.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement that her heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. “Violence anywhere especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” she said.

The shooting occurred the morning after Russell M. Nelson, the oldest-ever president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at 101.

The next president of the faith is expected to be Dallin H. Oaks, per church protocol.

The Seattle Storm is looking for a new head coach after the team announced it will move on next season without Coach Noelle Quinn.

The Seattle Storm is looking for a new head coach after the team announced it will move on next season without Coach Noelle Quinn.

Quinn has led the team for four-and-a-half years, and departs after a disappointing 74-73 loss to the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday.

The loss on the road in Game Three of the series eliminated the Storm from the first round of the WNBA playoffs for the second year in a row.

The 40-year-old Quinn made history as the team’s first female black head coach, following the abrupt resignation of former coach Dan Hughes.

Storm General Manager Talisa Rhea released the following statement:

On behalf of our organization, I would like to thank Noelle for her time with the Storm. Her commitment to the ongoing success of our organization and to furthering the development of our players was second to none. She put us in a position to win at the highest levels of the game and for that, we are grateful.”

The team finished seventh in the standings this year, with a 23-21 record.

Prior to her coaching career, Quinn played for the Storm twice as a point guard, during the 2013-14 season, and from 2016 to 2018.

She was also a member of the Storm’s 2018 WNBA championship team.

After retiring as a player, Quinn immediately began serving as an assistant coach with the team.

In 2020 the team promoted her to associate head coach.

A wrong-way driver on I-5 who took off from a crash Friday night, was killed several hours later when he was hit by an SUV.

A wrong-way driver on I-5 who took off from a crash Friday night, was killed several hours later when he was hit by an SUV.

Police say the man was struck and killed on the southbound off-ramp to North 175th, nearly eleven hours after he had hit a Washington State Department of Transportation vehicle in that same area.

The state patrols reports the first crash happened around 7:40 p.m Friday.

They say no one was hurt when the driver, headed north in the southbound lanes of I-5 near N. 175th, struck the DOT vehicle.

Troopers say the man who caused the crash took off on foot from the scene.

Officers were not able to locate him.

The following morning, just before 6:00 a.m., investigators say Washington State Patrol dispatchers got a 911 call from a driver who said he had just struck a pedestrian.

The driver said someone had jumped in front of their Acura MDX as the SUV was exiting southbound I-5 onto N. 175th.

Troopers and medics arrived shortly after the SUV struck the man.

They attempted life-saving efforts, but he died at the scene.

Investigators believe the man hit was running from the left shoulder to the right shoulder of the off-ramp before he was struck.

After investigating both collisions, troopers say they believe the person killed was the same wrong-way driver that was involved in the hit-and-run collision with the DOT vehicle several hours earlier.

Troopers say the driver of the Acura that hit the pedestrian, a 42-year-old Lake Stevens man, was not hurt.

Investigators say he showed no signs of impairment and won’t be charged.

The state patrol has notified family members of the man killed of his death.

He has been identified as Colton K. Petit, 24, of Granite Falls.

The collision came just a few hours after another deadly crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Just after midnight Saturday, troopers say a 27-year-old man from Independence, Missouri was in the median of I-5, two miles north of Longview.

Investigators say he then tried to run across the southbound lanes of the freeway.

A 43-year-old man from Gresham, Oregon, driving a Honda CRV, was headed southbound on the freeway when he struck and killed him.

The man hit died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV was not hurt.

Cleanup crews said they’ve recovered close to 900 gallons of diesel fuel and lube oil from Sinclair Inlet, after a 130-foot tugboat sank in Bremerton.

Cleanup crews said they’ve recovered close to 900 gallons of diesel fuel and lube oil from Sinclair Inlet after a 130-foot tugboat sank in Bremerton.

At approximately 4 p.m. Wednesday, a boat called the “Dominion” sank next to a dock at the Bremerton Marina.

On Friday, officials set up a unified command team to deal with the leaking fuel that consisted of the Coast Guard, the Washington State Department of Ecology, and private contractors.

Officials at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound said the first reports of the sinking tug came in to their headquarters Wednesday afternoon.

The boat’s owner reported an unknown amount of diesel fuel and about 200 gallons of lube oil were aboard the vessel when it sank.

Authorities deployed a containment boom and used absorbent pads to try to recover the product from around the Dominion.

A supplemental boom was also put in place to collect fuel and oil that shifted with Puget Sound tide changes.

Contractors are also using vacuum trucks and skimmers to recover the leaked product. The Coast Guard is trying to keep boat traffic from interrupting cleanup efforts.

It has established a “no-boating zone” from the Manette Bridge to the Bremerton Ferry Terminal.

Non-commercial vessels are being kept out of an area that extends 200 yards from the Bremerton Marina breakwater.

On Thursday, a day after the tugboat sank, divers conducted sounding operations to try to determine how much fuel remained in the vessel’s tanks. It’s unclear exactly what caused the tug to sink, but an official investigation is underway.

The Coast Guard is implementing an Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund to help pay for the cleanup operations and to help prevent damage to the environment.

Officials at the Washington Department of Ecology have also put together two shoreline cleanup assessment teams.

They will monitor the area for any damage to wildlife due to oil or fuel in the water.

State officials are asking anyone who has observed oiled wildlife to call a special hotline at (800) 22-BIRDS. Officials want people to report details about where the affected areas are, what was seen, and what wildlife was affected by pollution.

Officials are also asking people to avoid the area.

Contractors trained to deal with spills are working to clean up the pollution.

Authorities say no help is needed from anyone wishing to volunteer, by assisting with the cleanup operation right now.

In fact, they say people who come to take a look at the spill scene may actually hinder the teams who are responding to the spill.

Coast Guard officials say there is also a team currently working on a salvage plan to raise the vessel.

According to the Department of Ecology, two shoreline cleanup assessment teams conducted surveys along Point Washington Narrows from Lions Park south to the Manette Bridge.

They did find some weathered oil in that area, but authorities said it’s unlikely any of that oil came from the Dominion.

Crews will conduct at least one more shoreline survey for the incident.

As of Friday, officials said there have been no reports of affected birds or other wildlife.

Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson threatened legal action if plans to clean up the Hanford Nuclear Reservation are put on hold.

Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson fired a shot across the bow at the U.S. Energy Department Friday, threatening legal action if plans to clean up the Hanford Nuclear Reservation are put on hold, or cancelled completely.

The governor attended a press event in the Tri-Cities Friday, joining state political leaders, tribal officials and labor representatives.

“If the Department of Energy moves away from starting up the waste treatment plant, it would be a stunning waste of resources, a violation of multiple legal agreements, and in some ways most importantly, a slap in the face of workers that have spent decades at that location,” Ferguson said.

For years, the U.S. has produced plutonium at Hanford for nuclear weapons, which has left behind potentially-dangerous radioactive contamination.

Cleanup efforts involve a process known as “vitrification,” or turning the waste into a more stable glass form.

Federal officials were scheduled to start that procedure next month.

However, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D) WA has reported that federal officials now say they may delay or even alter those plans.

In 1989, the U.S. Department of Energy signed what is known as the “Tri-Party Agreement,” along with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Washington State Department of Ecology.

The agreement is supposed to ensure the cleanup of radioactive and hazardous waste at Hanford is done in compliance with federal and state laws.

Even though the Department of Energy announced on Thursday that the work will continue, Gov. Ferguson expressed doubts about whether the Trump Administration is serious about the commitment.

“We have a consent decree. It’s been in place for a long time and that obligates them to move forward,” Ferguson said. “This is a carefully-constructed, seriously-negotiated agreement.”

He said if the federal government delays the cleanup work, Washington state will take legal action.

“There is zero chance we are backing down on this. I want to be crystal clear to everybody about this. There is zero chance that we are going to lose. This going to go forward. That is going to happen, whatever that takes,” Ferguson said.

The U.S. government is obligated, under a federal court order, to treat 56 million gallons of radioactive waste stored in Hanford’s underground tanks.

U.S. taxpayers are footing the bill.

The Hanford Waste Treatment Plant, which has taken decades to develop for dealing with millions of gallons of radioactive waste, has cost the government an estimated $30 billion.

Ferguson and other community leaders say they’re concerned about any potential changes to the federal cleanup timeline.

Gov. Ferguson said his battles to enforce cleanup at Hanford date back to the days he served as an assistant attorney general in Washington state, when he worked on legal action against the Obama Administration.

“It’s not about who occupies the White House,” said Gov. Ferguson. “What it is, is about the federal government, each and every time we’ve had to go to court, upholding its obligations and its responsibilities and its promises to the people of this community, to the people of this state, and to the workers.”

State Republican Party Chair Jim Walsh has criticized Ferguson and Murray, saying their concerns are exaggerated. He has characterized rhetoric from state Democratic officials over potential delays as “fear-mongering.”

Forest fires across the state continue to grow in size, decreasing air quality for those who live in the Puget Sound region and the rest of the Evergreen State.

Forest fires across the state continue to grow in size, decreasing air quality for those who live in the Puget Sound region and the rest of the Evergreen State.

You’ve probably noticed the smoky haze and the orange sunsets.

The Air Quality Index for Seattle, Bellevue and the Kent Valley on Sunday was rated as “moderate” by the Washington Department of Ecology.

But it is “unhealthy for sensitive groups” in Wenatchee, Moses Lake and Yakima.

In Colville, the air quality is considered “unhealthy”.

A total of 14 fires are still burning across the state.

The largest include the 10,000-acre Bear Gulch fire, near Lake Cushman in the Olympic National Forest, the 10,000-acre Lower Sugarloaf Fire east of Lake Wenatchee, a 13,000-acre fire known as the Rattlesnake Fire near the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, and the 14,000-acre Crown Creek Fire along the upper Columbia River, east of the Colville National Forest.

The Perry Fire, in the North Cascades, west of Ross Lake, has forced the closure of several areas, trails and camps.

Officials are warning of heavy smoke in that area.

North Cascades National Park public affairs officials say fire suppression teams have not been able to use helicopters or planes to battle the flames the last few days, due to smoke and low visibility.

Fire crews on the ground are working to contain the fire, but are being hampered by extremely steep, difficult and rugged terrain.

While there are 14 fires currently burning in Washington state, some are just a few hundred acres.

The larger fires with active firefighting efforts right now include the following areas:

Bear Gulch Fire – 10,000 acres, 9% contained, Olympic National Forest

Perry Fire – 1,500 near Highway 20 and Ross Lake in the north Cascades

Wildcat Fire – 7,500 acres just east of Mount Rainier near Bumping Lake

Labor Mountain Fire – nearly 2,000 acres north of Cle Elum

Lower Sugarloaf Fire – 10,000 acres, east of Lake Wenatchee in the Wenatchee National Forest.

Pomas Fire – 3,500 acres west of Lake Chelan

Rattlesnake Fire – 13,500 acres, near Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area

Lynx Mountain – 3,000 acres near Colville Reservation in Ferry County

Tacoma Creek Fire – 2,700 acres, on the boundary between Stevens and Pend Oreille Counties

Crown Creek Fire – 14,000 acres, 5% contained, upper Columbia River east of Colville National Forest.
