A Bothell man is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly killing his wife.

A Bothell man is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly killing his wife in a premeditated attack early Monday morning in Shoreline.

Casey McNerthney, a spokesperson for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office (KCPAO), confirmed the charges against Hector Gonzalez Medina, 43.

“In this case, the defendant is accused of waiting for about 40 minutes under a tree and then shooting at the victim, in this case, through the passenger window of a vehicle, and then shooting some more,” McNerthney said. “Those are really difficult details to read for the many people who loved this victim.”

Prosecutors said a witness told police they overheard Medina threaten to kill Hana Gonzalez over the phone the night before the shooting. Medina is accused of waiting outside a friend’s apartment before firing multiple rounds into her truck.

According to court documents, Medina told police he got angry when he arrived home to find she was not there, so he called her and they argued.

He allegedly told police he threatened to kill her over the phone.

His bail is set at $5 million, and he’s due in court Tuesday.

Bothell incident occurs during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

“This tragedy, coming during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, is a painful reminder of what’s at stake,” David Martin, Chair of the KCPAO Domestic Violence Unit, said. “Domestic violence is not a private matter — it’s a public safety crisis. Behind every statistic is a person whose life mattered — and a family and community left to grieve. Awareness must mean more than recognition; it must drive the change that saves lives.”

This is the 12th domestic violence homicide in King County this year.

“One of my first decisions when I was elected prosecuting attorney was to create a Gender-Based Violence and Prevention Division in my office because attending to the needs of survivors of gender-based violence is a priority for me personally – and it requires the intentional investment of resources, time, and capacity,” King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion said. “It also requires understanding.”

The University of Denver will join the West Coast Conference in July, becoming the league’s 11th member, the conference announced Friday.

The University of Denver will join the West Coast Conference (WCC) — which recently welcomed Seattle University — in July, becoming the league’s 11th member, the conference announced Friday.

“This is an exciting day for DU and an incredible opportunity to continue to advance our exceptional academic and athletic programs,” University of Denver Chancellor Jeremy Haefner said. “The excellence of schools that are part of the West Coast Conference is a perfect complement to DU and will help us continue to recruit the very best students and faculty.”

Seattle University Vice President for Athletics Shaney Fink welcomed the news, calling Denver’s athletics program “competitive” and praising the school’s “strong academic profile.”

“It’s great news for the West Coast Conference,” Fink told KIRO Newsradio on Friday. “On all fronts, it’s really exciting.”

“Having that kind of addition, where it’s still in the West footprint, but it expands it a little bit, gives more prospective students, more eyeballs on the conference,” Fink said. “The student athletes you’re looking to recruit are looking to be in the strongest conference they can, so being stable and having schools that are similar, all of this really helps in the process.”

New conference rivals featured in Monday night basketball game

Seattle University, which joined the WCC earlier this year, will host Denver in a non-conference men’s basketball game Monday night at Redhawk Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Denver’s Vice Chancellor for Athletics, Josh Berlo, said the Pioneers are “pumped up” for the matchup in Seattle.

“We’re gonna get to learn more pretty quickly how we start to match up with some West Coast Conference foes,” Berlo said.

Fink said joining the WCC has been a boost for Seattle U, increasing visibility for its teams both in person and on television.

“All of the reasons that we had our sights on the West Coast Conference, we’ve already seen those come into fruition,” Fink said. “Every one of our teams has had the highest attendance numbers during the [fall] season when we’ve been on the road, tons of alumni support, certainly more eyeballs.”

The WCC will also see a major change next summer when longtime member Gonzaga departs for the Pac-12 Conference.

Alaska Airlines is bringing in an outside party to review its IT systems after three major incidents in just over three months.

In a statement, the airline said it’s engaged Accenture, “a leading global information technology and management consulting firm.”

This comes after a Microsoft Azure Cloud outage knocked out the airlines’ online services on Wednesday, causing delays.

Just the week before, some flights had to be canceled when problems at the airline’s primary data center forced it to ground its fleet for hours. A critical hardware failure at the data center in July also caused an hours-long ground stop and canceled flights.

During one of the ground stops, a stranded passenger told KIRO 7 TV, “We spent more time waiting in line to try and figure out our canceled flight than it took to fly from China to Seattle.”

The airline said its work with Accenture will include a “top-to-bottom” review and assessment of Alaska’s technology systems. The airline promised to implement recommendations quickly.

Across Washington, government agencies and nonprofits are scrambling to help 930,000 state residents who will lose their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, food benefits starting Nov. 1 due to the ongoing federal shutdown.

On Friday, a federal judge in Rhode Island blocked the Trump administration from halting SNAP benefits that feed 42 million Americans amid the ongoing government shutdown.

During the hearing, an attorney for the Justice Department argued the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program no longer existed because Congress had not appropriated funds for it, and that it was up to the administration whether to tap $6 billion in contingency funds to keep the program running.

The Rhode Island ruling came just minutes after a federal judge in Boston said plaintiffs in a similar case are likely to prevail on their claim that suspending SNAP benefits is unlawful. That judge said she is still weighing a request for a temporary restraining order to maintain the payments.

Gov. Ferguson diverts $2.2M to local food banks

In a last-minute effort, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson is diverting $2.2 million to food banks across the state. Many low-income, no-income, or disabled residents who are SNAP-eligible people rely on food banks for groceries every day.

However, Aaron Czyzewski, Director of Advocacy and Public Policy at the non-profit Food Lifeline, said it may be too late for governments to intervene, and SNAP recipients are now left to rely on the kindness of friends, family, and their communities for help.

He said they are also seeing more and more federal government and military families in need and actively reaching out, asking for help.

“There were 200 military families who were needing support for Thanksgiving groceries,” Czyzewski told KIRO Newsradio. “That list is now up to 800 families.”

On Tuesday, U.S. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal partnered with the City of Seattle on a resource fair to help other federal workers with food and bills, who were impacted by the shutdown.

One of those workers, Alison Jowers, a furloughed federal contractor, shared, “I was able to stockpile some food, so I have a little bit to get me by. I have rent for November. If this continues, I may not have rent for December.”

Nonprofits stockpile resources in preparation for SNAP benefits running out

Jamie Lynn Wheeler with Northwest Harvest said, while a lot of nonprofits stockpiled food and other resources in anticipation of SNAP benefits running out, they are thinking outside the box for ways to help.

“I’ve even seen, with Halloween around the corner, people trying to provide packaged food from their front doors that way,” Wheeler said.

The Edmonds Food Bank is teaming up with the Feed Me Hospitality and Restaurant Group to deliver extra food and repurposed food to people in need.

“The combination of inflation, increased grocery costs, the shutdown, SNAP cuts, and then already us dealing with food cuts from food we would normally receive,” explained spokesperson Kelly Lewis. “All of that is hard.”

Private companies are also chipping in to help. Instacart is offering customers who receive SNAP benefits 50% off their next grocery order. DoorDash is waiving service and delivery fees for 300,000 orders for SNAP recipients. And GoPuff is donating $10 million to help SNAP recipients.

Bank of America said it’s delivering $5 million to immediately support families and individuals experiencing urgent food needs. The money will go to nearly 100 nonprofit organizations currently addressing increasing needs at the local level in communities nationwide. In addition, the corporation is committing $250 million over the next five years to support food insecurity across American communities.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends Sunday, November 2, and clocks will fall back one hour. Subsequently, 4 p.m. sunsets begin next week.

While many are looking forward to extra sleep on Sunday, others are dreading 4 p.m. sunsets.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends Sunday, November 2, and clocks will fall back one hour. Subsequently, 4 p.m. sunsets begin next week.

Say goodbye to 5 p.m. sunsets

The sun will set at 5:53 p.m. on Saturday and then at 4:51 p.m. on Sunday, according to Sunrise Sunset’s website.

Daylight will continue to slowly crawl back each day, with the sun setting at 4:22 p.m. on November 30.

Sunsets won’t return to 5 p.m. until January 24.

Daylight Saving Time ends

When clocks fall back on Sunday, The Associated Press recommends people get out into the morning sun to help their body’s clock reset.

Standard time resets at 2 a.m., so people will either want to set their clocks an hour back before bed or as soon as they wake up.

Clocks will then “spring forward” on March 8 and DST will return.

The American Medical Association and American Academy of Sleep Medicine, among other health organizations, have pushed for standard time year-round, according to The AP.

Research from Stanford University found switching back and forth is bad for health, as organs, the immune system, and metabolism can be disrupted.

“The best way to think about it is as if the central clock were like a conductor of an orchestra and each of the organs were a different instrument,” Jamie Zeitzer, co-director of Stanford’s Center for Sleep and Circadian Sciences, said, The AP reported.

It’s better to have more light in the morning and less at night to keep the natural rhythm, Zeitzer added.

History of Daylight Saving Time

So why have Daylight Saving Time in the first place?

Contrary to popular belief, Benjamin Franklin didn’t invent it. The idea actually came from George Hudson, a New Zealand entomologist, in 1895. Hudson proposed the time change to give himself more daylight hours to study insects, KIRO host John Curley explained.

“He studied bugs, and he wanted more time to look at bugs during the daylight. That’s why he came up with it,” Curley said on “The John Curley Show” on KIRO Newsradio.

While DST was originally adopted to conserve energy, studies have shown it doesn’t significantly reduce energy consumption.

“It doesn’t actually do anything to save energy because people use more AC in the summer,” Curley said.

Farmers have historically opposed DST because it disrupts their schedules, particularly when it comes to feeding livestock.

“Farmers didn’t like it either, because it messed up their cows when it came to feeding time,” Curley explained.

The first widespread use of DST was during World War I by Germany, aiming to conserve fuel. The United States followed suit in 1918 under President Woodrow Wilson, but the practice was repealed after the war. It was reintroduced during World War II by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and later standardized by the Uniform Time Act of 1966 under President Lyndon B. Johnson.

“President Wilson — one of the worst — in 1918, he made it a law. Then it was repealed,” Curley said. “Then FDR relaunched it in 1942, and then LBJ made it officially the law in 196,6 and that’s why we’re stuck with daylight saving time.”

Two people, an adult male and his 7-year-old son, were killed after a boat overturned on the Bogachiel River.

Another person who was also on the boat remains missing.

At approximately 12 p.m. Oct. 30, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a boat accident near Forks. The individual calling reported that he and three others were aboard a boat when it flipped.

The closest location of the vessel was south of milepost 4 off SR 101, southwest of Forks.

The man who contacted law enforcement was able to save himself by grabbing onto a tree before calling 911, reporting that the other three were still in the water.

“Rescue personnel located 35-year-old Christian Akers of Sequim and his 7-year-old son, Wyatt Akers, but sadly, both were pronounced deceased despite lifesaving efforts,” the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office reported. “39-year-old Alfonso Graham of Port Orchard remains missing, and search efforts are ongoing.”

In addition to the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Districts 1 and 6, a Forks ambulance team, the La Push Police Department, the La Push Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the National Park Service all responded to the call to provide assistance.

“The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest condolences to the friends and family affected by this tragedy,” the sheriff’s office continued. “We also share a heartfelt thank you to all first responders for their tireless efforts as the search for Mr. Graham continues.”

While unconfirmed as of this reporting, a family dog may have been aboard the vessel alongside the four individuals.

Waiting, being patient, wanting something and not having it — these feelings aren't as built into children's lives in 2025 as it was in past generations.

We all love convenience, but there is a hidden cost for our kids.

Waiting, being patient, wanting something and not having it — these feelings aren’t as built into children’s lives in 2025 as it was in past generations.

Dr. Becky Kennedy is the clinical psychologist behind the “Good Inside” YouTube series. Like many of us, she loves streaming services, but remembers the days of going to Blockbuster.

“I actually think about how good it was for us growing up to have something as mundane as movie watching be filled with waiting and frustration, because in a way, we were naturally building so many of the muscles that we needed to flex in much more important situations,” Kennedy said.

Dr. Becky talks about three ideas.

1.) Resilience is built, not born.

2.) Frustration is our friend, not our enemy.

3.) Our job is not to bring our children’s uncomfortable emotions to zero.

RELATED STORIES

Parenting advice: Navigating 'digital masculinity' content while raising young boys

<img decoding="async" width="719" height="404" src="https://mynorthwest.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Untitled-design-2025-10-24T114513.417-420x236.jpg" class="sub_art" alt="What does '6-7' mean?
Resilience is built, not born

Let’s start with the first idea.

Resilience-building can start with your child completing a puzzle, but the pathway there can look messy. No kid is going to say, “This is hard, but I can do hard things”.

What actually happens is this: “‘I can’t do it. I really, really want you to do it for me. Please do it for me. Please do it for me,'” Becky said. “Or just something without words, a meltdown.”

I’m sure many parents can relate and agree that moments like this are inconvenient.

But our perspective on how we see it is everything.

“This doesn’t mean my kid is a mess. This doesn’t mean my kid gives up easily,” Becky said. “I can’t get to a place with my kid where they can tolerate and be capable in the mess if they don’t go through the experience of being overwhelmed by the mess. What is our job to remember? I need to show my kid that I can tolerate this situation.”

Frustration is our friend, not our enemy

Now let’s talk about the second idea. Dr. Becky challenges parents to think of frustration as a sign that kids are learning.

Becky believes this concept is most important for parents.

“Because do you know what happens when we hear our kids say, ‘I don’t want to do my math problem. It’s so hard.’ We panic,” Becky said. “We actually think there’s a problem to solve, and then we layer our panic next to our kids’ panic, and no wonder they become less and less able to deal with frustration.”

Children’s uncomfortable emotions can’t be zero

It’s not our job as parents to bring our children’s uncomfortable emotions to a zero.

Kids may experience being left out of a birthday party, but adults get left out of things all the time.

Dr. Becky said it’s important for kids to be prepared for those situations and experience disappointment.

“I don’t know about you, but I really don’t want my adult child to call me and say, ‘Mom, you have to buy me a big house,'” Becky said. “I really don’t want my 25-year-old to call me and say, ‘You’ve got to call my manager and tell my manager why I deserve the promotion.'”

These situations may be laughable, but they actually do happen.

Learning how to be resilient, dealing with frustration, and uncomfortable emotions will benefit parents and kids in the future.

Due to budget restraints, the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA) is laying off 13 staff members, the organization confirmed this week.

Due to budget restraints, the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA) is laying off 13 staff members, the organization confirmed this week.

The layoffs account for approximately 22% of the staff. Additionally, KCRHA removed 15 vacant positions. These decisions are in response to a projected $4.7 million budget shortfall for KCRHA in 2026.

“Earlier this year, we took several steps to address the budget issue, such as enacting a hiring freeze, moving staff to positions to cover essential needs, and significantly decreasing the use of consultants,” KCRHA CEO Dr. Kelly Kinnison said, according to FOX 13. “Ultimately, I made this decision to be a responsible steward of public funds in the midst of financial constraints at the direction of the Governing Board to sustain our successes in paying providers and awarding contracts on time.”

KCRHA is an independent agency, working in tandem with the King County government, that is responsible for coordinating and providing homelessness services.

The budget shortfall occurred once the general fund shrank its budget for KCRHA. The layoffs aim to cut $3.05 million from the organization’s estimated budget. KCRHA will also focus on managing contracts and reassessing its organizational structure.

Multiple people who had been allegedly plotting a violent attack over the Halloween weekend were arrested Friday in Michigan, FBI Director Kash Patel said in a social media post.

Multiple people who had been allegedly plotting a violent attack over the Halloween weekend were arrested Friday in Michigan, FBI Director Kash Patel said in a social media post.

Patel said more information would be released later. But the law enforcement effort appeared to be in the Detroit area.

FBI and state police vehicles were in a neighborhood near Fordson High School in Dearborn. People wearing shirts marked FBI walked in and out of a house, including one person who collected paper bags and other items from an evidence truck.

Dearborn police said in a social media post that it was aware that the FBI was conducting operations in the city and assured residents that there was no threat to the community. A message seeking comment from an FBI spokesperson in Detroit was not immediately returned.

Separately, in May, the FBI said it arrested a man who had spent months planning an attack against a U.S. Army site in suburban Detroit on behalf of the Islamic State group. The man, Ammar Said, didn’t know that his supposed allies in the alleged plot were undercover FBI employees.

Said remains in custody, charged with attempting to provide support to a terrorist organization. The criminal complaint was replaced in September with a criminal “information” document, signaling that a guilty plea is likely.

Associated Press writers Eric Tucker and Sarah Brumfield in Washington and Ed White in Detroit contributed to this report.

The man who shot Washington State Patrol Trooper Dean Atkinson in the face and hand in 2022 was sentenced to more than 25 years on Thursday.

The man who shot Washington State Patrol (WSP) Trooper Dean Atkinson in the face and hand in 2022 was sentenced to more than 25 years in prison on Thursday.

Brandon O’Neel previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder after shooting Atkinson on September 22, 2022, and was sentenced to 309 months.

“I appreciate the work of the court and the jury in this case and am relieved that such a dangerous individual was fairly and appropriately sanctioned,” WSP Chief John R. Batiste wrote in a statement.

Eviction notice triggers violent response

On September 22, 2022, an eviction notice was served on O’Neel’s residence, but officials found a note on his door with a specific sentence underlined.

“Evict me and I will execute any cop or manager you send period,” the note read, according to probable cause documents obtained by KING 5.

Inside the residence, a sign with the word “bomb” on it was found, prompting an evacuation and a WSP bomb squad response to clear the area. A bomb was not located inside the residence.

O’Neel was not home at the time of the WSP response, but returned home at approximately 5 p.m., and was no longer able to enter his apartment.

A witness relayed to a police officer that a masked man stopped his car in the road near the 1300 block of W. Poplar Street shortly after 5 p.m.

O’Neel’s car was stopped next to Atkinson, who was in a fully-marked police vehicle. The witness claimed O’Neel exited his vehicle and fired four or five shots at Atkinson, according to probable cause documents obtained by KING 5.

After the shooting, Atkinson was able to drive himself to Providence Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries. He was subsequently flown to Harborview Medical Center.

Atkinson’s father, Dean Atkinson Sr., detailed the chilling scene as Trooper Atkinson arrived at the hospital.

“[Trooper Atkinson] walked up to the ER door. It’s a secure facility kind of like this and banged on the door,” Atkinson Sr. said, according to KIRO 7. “His hand prints and blood were on the glass door of the ER. There was a blood trail from his car to the door. He protected himself with his hand when he got shot, and that’s what caused the hand injury.”

Law enforcement later identified O’Neel as the suspected shooter, who had already fled the scene.

O’Neel traveled to Oregon before deciding to change directions and head back into Washington. Officers stopped O’Neel on SR 125, and he was arrested.

A piece of ammunition from WWII was discovered in Grays Harbor County, prompting an immediate response from the county sheriff's office.

A piece of ammunition from WWII was discovered in Grays Harbor County, prompting an immediate response from the county sheriff’s office.

The piece of ammunition was a possible explosive device located near Simmons Road and Monte Brady Road in Montesano.

“The Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad and the U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team responded to assist with the investigation,” the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office stated. “After X-raying the device, it was determined to be an inert piece of ammunition from a World War II–era Super Bazooka.”

Inert ammunition does not contain gunpowder or an explosive charge to initiate its detonation. A perimeter was still established, with nearby roadways closed off as a precaution during the investigation.

“We want to thank the public for their patience during this incident and remind everyone — if you come across a suspicious or unfamiliar item that could be dangerous, do not touch or move it,” the sheriff’s office continued. “Contact law enforcement immediately. It’s always better to err on the side of caution.”

There are many Halloween activities happening in Seattle Friday night.

Halloween is a favorite holiday for many, and it’s even better this year that it is on a Friday!

Let’s dive into some, cause it would be impossible to list all, of the Halloween activities going on Friday night.

For families in Seattle, Seattle Parks and Recreation is putting on free events across town, including the CID Spooktactular treats event from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Hing Hay Park, the Tot Halloween Carnival from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Queen Anne Community Center, the Carfield Creepy Carnival for Kids from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Garfield Community Center, and Halloween Night at the Ridge: Tricks, Treats and Tunes at the Delridge Community Center from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Teens can also check out the free Halloween Carnival at the Garfield Teen Life Center at 7.

Not enough free family fun for you? Well how about Waterfront Park Frights and Delights where you can trick or treat along the waterfront and enjoy performances and all the costumes. That party runs from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. There’s also the Haunted Boo-Levard at Kent Station from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., where there will be more trick or treating, carnival games and prizes, and lots more. There will also be kid-friendly scares, treats, and themed booths at the Trunk or Treat on the Lawn of the Stone House Cafe from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Halloween activities in Seattle include movies, parties, festivals, and more!

In Fremont, it is a big day for the Fremont Troll as it is Trolloween. There will be live music and the theatrical pageant to kick off the event, leading to the Haunt of Fremont, which is a costumed procession through Fremont. The fun starts rain or shine at 7 PM.

Beetlejuice and the sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice are being shown for free at Freeway Park on Friday, starting at 7 p.m. Remember to bring your own blankets, chairs, and maybe even umbrellas to enjoy the movies.

For those 21 and up looking for a more adult celebration, there are PLENTY of Halloween parties at bars and clubs across the region. Search for your favorite place, and there’s a good chance you’ll find a party.

On Saturday and Sunday at Town Hall Seattle, you will find the Seattle Catrinas Festival. This is a celebration of the Day of the Dead that features music, folklore, art, food, and culture. There will also be an altar where you can place flowers, pictures, and mementoes of loved ones who have passed. There will be activities for the kids as well. The Seattle Catrinas Festival is Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

For all the fans of cats out there, you’ll want to check out the Sea-Meow Convention at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall this weekend. This has everything a cat lover could ask for, including merch, a kitten alley where you can cuddle with kittens, panels, workshops, presentations, and plenty more. You can even bring your cat … if they can follow the rules. Sea-Meow is Saturday and Sunday.

If you wanted to get that toy you always wanted growing up but weren’t able to, you might want to head to the Washington State Fair Events Center this weekend for the Washington State Toy Show. There will be over 250 vendors showing off toys, comics, collectibles, and more. You’ll need a ticket to get in, but kids 12 and under are free.

How are you celebrating Halloween? Let me know at paulh@kiroradio.com.

Seattle police chief discussed the department's staffing surge, potential drone use, and the CARE team.

The Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) current workforce includes 1,200 sworn officers and 631 civilian employees, according to the city’s website. The department rebounded from a low point in April 2024, when it had just 424 active officers — the smallest force since at least 1957.

SPD hiring back on track

SPD Chief Shon Barnes said the department is on pace to hire its 150th officer in the next couple of days.

“The people want to come here and work. They want to come here and be a part of what we have going on in the Seattle Police Department,” Barnes told “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio.

He added that the department is not losing as many officers to other agencies, but instead, officers are retiring.

“We’re not seeing as many. I think we’ll definitely see a higher net. My goal is a net of 100 for this year. Last year, we had a net of one. So if you do the percentage markup, that’s better,” Barnes shared.

Police drones in Seattle next?

Moving on to the topic of drones, as the Redmond Police Department currently uses the technology to nab suspects, Barnes sees the need for the crafty devices in Seattle.

“With FIFA coming up, we’ll have drone detection systems up, obviously, and some of our partners, especially those that are assigned to FIFA, federal partners, will have drones that are up,” he explained. “And it’s just about keeping people safe, being able to see what that call is or what it is not.”

However, he did acknowledge that residents could have privacy concerns.

“Every city has a different tolerance for technology, and so we have to see what the tolerance for technology here is in Seattle,” he said.

Seattle police chief makes case for CARE team

As for responding to a crime, Seattle is expanding its Community Assisted Response and Engagement (CARE) team. The CARE Department is Seattle’s third branch of public safety and operates the 911 Communications Center and the Community Crisis Responder (CCR) Team, according to the city’s website.

However, critics worry the CARE team may be ill-equipped to handle dangerous 911 calls.

Barnes noted that when someone calls the 911 center, which is no longer operated by police, the responders go through a list of questions to assess the situation. One of those questions is if there are any dangerous weapons involved. If the answer is no, then the CARE team will be dispatched.

“For most calls, you go to them, it could be nothing, and then you’re like, ‘Why am I here?’, CARE team could help. Or you could go to calls and it comes out as nothing, and then it turns quickly, but they all have the capability to give us a call, or get on the radio, or not intervene at all if they think it’s going to be dangerous,” Barnes explained.

Seattle space to house beer hall, 2 new restaurants

In April 2024, Sea Creatures signed the lease to take over the former F.X. McRory’s space, which closed in 2017 after 40 years of service at the location.

“Pioneer Square has always had a special energy — beautiful old buildings, art, sports, history, music and creativity all living side by side,” Jeremy Price, designer and co-owner of Sea Creatures, stated in a news release, according to The Puget Sound Business Journal. “We’re excited to add three new places for people to gather, eat, drink and hang out.”

Lowlander Brewing will be a brewery and beer hall that can accommodate approximately 100 guests in its 2,500-square-foot space. The brewery will also include an outdoor seating area equipped with a 12-foot-wide TV wall and a food menu featuring sausages, fries, and salads.

Un Po Tipsy will sit right next door, serving New York-style pizza by the slice inside its 1,200-square-foot restaurant space. The pizza spot will offer cocktails, wine, and canned beers alongside its pizza offerings.

My Oh My will be a fine dining experience with Sea Creatures describing the menu offerings as “Rome meets London meets Seattle,” according to The Puget Sound Business Journal. My Oh My will have a capacity of only 32 guests for its dinner service within a quaint 1,000-square-foot space.

The Sea Creatures restaurant group currently operates nearly a dozen restaurants across Seattle, including Wilmott’s Ghost, located inside The Spheres.

It also managed The Whale Wins, a James Beard Award-winning restaurant in Fremont that had its last day of service on Tuesday after it was forced to close. Eater Seattle reported the restaurant had been losing money for a number of years.

More than 100 people came to a resource fair at Seattle City Hall for federal workers.

U.S. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal spent the day in Seattle at City Hall.

There, she partnered with the city to put on a resource fair for federal workers who have been impacted by the government shutdown.

“I was thrilled to be able to propose this to the City of Seattle, and today is all about providing federal workers with as many resources as we can,” Jayapal said.

More than 100 people came in the first 45 minutes of the fair.

“I was able to stockpile some food, so I have a little bit to get me by. I have rent for November. If this continues, I may not have rent for December,” furloughed federal contractor Alison Jowers said.

Some were worried, depressed, and anxious about the near-term future for their families.

“It’s not easy not knowing if the Department of Defense is going to pay service members. I will have to shoulder all of our bills — two car payments, a mortgage in Georgia, rent in Seattle, groceries for both places. And, it’s going to be tight,” Caressa, who lives in Seattle while her husband serves in the military in Georgia, said.

Impacted workers were offered help and support for things like food, rental and mortgage assistance, as well as information about transportation, and help with utilities.

“We want to support our customers through these uncertain times as they navigate financial challenges. Our customer care team is prepared to work with anyone impacted so they don’t have to worry about their utility bills while waiting for their paychecks,” Andrew Lee, General Manager and CEO of Seattle Public Utilities, said.

Several organizations participate in Seattle resource fair

A number of community and government partners participated, including Seattle City Light.

“We know that in times of financial uncertainty, it can be hard to ask for assistance. We want customers to know that there are options available for everyone, and we want to help,” Dawn Lindell, General Manager and CEO of Seattle City Light, said.

Other agencies and organizations participating were Seattle Public Utilities, Food Lifeline, BECU, Essentials First, United Way of King County, Washington State Employment Security Department, and Workforce Development Council of Seattle – King County.

“The City of Seattle cares deeply about our residents and communities, especially those facing hardship because of the federal shutdown,” Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell said. “We also know affordability pressures are real for many families across our city. That’s why we’re connecting federal workers and people of all occupations to resources they can use right now.”
