For Dusty, owner of Craftsman Plumbing, plumbing has never been just about pipes and water pressure.

Seattle has no shortage of plumbers. But few are known by name, and even fewer by heart.

For Dusty, owner of Craftsman Plumbing, plumbing has never been just about pipes and water pressure. It’s about people, and surprisingly, about food.

“I think plumbing and cooking have a lot in common,” Dusty said with a grin. “Both take patience, precision, and respect for the process. And if you do it right, people remember how it made them feel.”

In a city where customer service often feels rushed or impersonal, Craftsman Plumbing has built something different – a culture rooted in mutual respect, clear communication, and a simple
promise known as their “No Mansplaining Guarantee.”

When Dusty isn’t troubleshooting a stubborn leak or installing a new water heater, you’ll probably find him behind a stove. His YouTube channel, Plumber Eats, is a mix of showcasing local restaurants, kitchen banter, and the same down-to-earth charm that defines his work in homes across Seattle.

On a recent visit to Beast and Cleaver, an acclaimed Ballard butcher shop that serves a sandwich at 11:00 am sharp on Thursdays and Fridays until gone. Dusty had chance to learn about the dry aging process with Zach.

“I’ve always loved food because it brings people together,” Dusty said. “Plumbing does that too – just in a different way. When someone’s kitchen sink or water heater breaks, you’re helping restore a piece of normal life. It’s personal.”

That blend of craftsmanship and care has become Craftsman Plumbing’s hallmark. What started as a local service call business has evolved into something more – a reflection of Dusty’s belief that respect and empathy are as essential as any wrench in the tool bag. For Dusty and his team, plumbing is only half the job. The other half is how they make people feel in their own homes.

After hearing countless stories from customers — especially women — who felt dismissed or talked down to by past service providers, Dusty decided Craftsman Plumbing would do things differently.

That commitment led to the creation of the company’s now-famous “No Mansplaining Guarantee.” It’s a promise that every technician will explain problems clearly, without condescension, and with genuine respect for the homeowner’s intelligence.

“People just want to be heard and treated with dignity,” Dusty explains. “We’re invited into someone’s personal space – that’s a privilege, not a right. The least we can do is communicate like equals.”

It’s a simple idea that’s resonated deeply across Seattle. From Ballard to Burien, homeowners have noticed the difference – not just in how their plumbing works afterward, but in how they’re
treated along the way.

In a city known for craftsmanship, creativity, and community, Craftsman Plumbing fits right in. Dusty doesn’t just want his team to fix plumbing problems – he wants them to build trust. That
starts with mentorship. Each new technician goes through hands-on training that focuses as much on communication as it does on technical skill. Respect isn’t just a slogan; it’s a standard. Dusty often joins his team in the field, guiding them not only on how to repair a fixture, but on how to listen, explain, and empathize.

“Seattle homeowners are smart,” he said. “They ask good questions. I tell our techs – never rush an answer. Take the time to teach. That’s how you turn a service call into a relationship.”

It’s an approach that mirrors the city itself – thoughtful, inclusive, and a little unconventional. Just like Dusty’s kitchen experiments on Plumber Eats, there’s a blend of precision and personality
behind every job. When Craftsman Plumbing showed up at homeowner Sarah’s house, her concern was far more than a leaky faucet – it was a sense of being talked down to and dismissed by previous service providers.

After the tech wrapped up the job, Sarah remarked, “After years of dreading plumbing calls, Craftsman was a revelation. The technician explained everything clearly, asked for my input, and made me feel like a valued partner in the process – not a clueless bystander in my own home.”

That sentiment sums up what sets Craftsman Plumbing apart. For Dusty and his team, respect isn’t a marketing line – it’s the foundation of every service call. Whether it’s helping a family in
Ballard, mentoring a new apprentice, or sharing a favorite dish on Plumber Eats, the mission stays the same: to bring care, clarity, and craftsmanship to every home they visit.

In a city that celebrates creativity, connection, and community, Craftsman Plumbing has found it’s niche – not just as a trusted Seattle plumber, but as a reminder that good work starts with good people.

Tyson O’Neill, owner of Generator Supercenter of Puget Sound in Lynnwood, said homeowners must stop treating backup power like a luxury.

When the power goes out in the Pacific Northwest, life changes instantly. For some families, it’s a minor inconvenience. For others, it can mean danger. No heat in the dead of winter. No refrigeration for food or medicine. No ability to plug in medical equipment. Working from home nowadays? You just lost power to your office.

That’s why Tyson O’Neill, owner of Generator Supercenter of Puget Sound in Lynnwood, said homeowners must stop treating backup power like a luxury.

“Everybody who owns a home has insurance on their home,” he explained. “We look at this as being an insurance piece for protecting your home and your investment. Being without power is the most important appliance in your house, because without that, you can’t use any of the other conveniences you rely on every day.”

Safety and security come first

Losing power isn’t just inconvenient — it can be dangerous.

Tyson recalls meeting an elderly couple who needed a whole-home generator because her husband’s declining health required reliable medical equipment.

“They wanted peace of mind, not only for their home, but for him,” he said.

Medical needs aren’t the only concern. As O’Neill notes, storm season always brings a rush of panic buyers.

“People say, ‘I don’t want to go through what I went through last year,'” he said. “Schools are back in session, the weather starts to change, and suddenly they realize they can’t risk being unprepared.”

The point is simple: Waiting until after your neighborhood goes dark isn’t an option.

The process is much easier than you think

For many homeowners, the biggest obstacle is uncertainty — how much it costs, how complicated the installation will be, or whether their home is even compatible. O’Neill explains that’s where Generator Supercenter steps in.

“We send a representative to analyze your home, calculate the load, and determine the right size and placement of your generator. From there, financing can even be handled at the table, and installation is usually just two to three weeks out,” he said.

And unlike one-off installers, the Supercenter doesn’t disappear after the sale. More than 90% of their customers choose ongoing monitoring and maintenance. Every morning, technicians remotely check the health of each unit. If a problem arises, they get priority service before the next storm hits.

Why Generac — and why the Generator Supercenter of Puget Sound?

Generac is the No. 1 generator brand in America, and for good reason. Their latest models feature quieter operation, improved efficiency, and even Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity that allows automatic software updates.

But technology is only part of the story. O’Neill says the difference comes from the people installing and maintaining the systems.

“We pride ourselves on being a servant for the community and the customer,” he said. “Even if someone doesn’t buy from us, our goal is to educate them so they can make the best decision.”

That commitment to service has already earned Generator Supercenter of Puget Sound dozens of five-star reviews. Customers repeatedly praise the company for its professionalism, education-first approach, and reliability in emergencies.

Protect your home. Protect your family.

A standby generator isn’t about convenience. It’s about protecting your investment, safeguarding your family, and ensuring peace of mind when the unexpected happens.

As O’Neill put it, “Being prepared is a good motto. It’s like that Boy Scout model — be prepared. It’s about being in control of your home and your energy, no matter what happens.”

As small and medium-sized businesses in the Seattle-Tacoma region prepare to capitalize on renewed economic momentum and easing interest rates, Bonneville Seattle stands as the premier media partner to amplify their growth.

Is now the time for businesses to gain market share now and for 2026?

With the Federal Reserve having recently lowered interest rates by a quarter point and rumored to lower interest rates two more times by the end of 2025, the economic environment is shifting toward growth, optimism, and increased consumer activity. For businesses, this is a prime opportunity to increase brand presence, capture market share, and drive measurable results both now and for the coming year.

Media advertising thrives in moments of transition. As borrowing costs drop, businesses and consumers alike become more active — launching new initiatives, making purchases that have been put off, and engaging with content. Media platforms, especially those with loyal followers, offer businesses a direct line to consumers who are ready to spend.

Why advertise now?

Drive immediate action: Lower rates often lead to increased retail and service activity. Media advertising can convert that momentum into direct response and sales for local businesses.

Lower Interest Rates = Easier Access to Capital: Recent rate cuts are unlocking affordable financing, enabling businesses to expand, hire, and invest in marketing, as well as for consumers who have been putting off large purchases.

Capture consumer attention early: As economic confidence builds, media consumption rises. Brands that advertise now will be top of mind when spending accelerates. Don’t be late to the party.

Optimism Among Local SMBs: 69% of small businesses in Washington are optimistic about 2025, with 78% planning to grow this year.

Leverage emotional momentum: Media connects with consumers in real time, meeting them where they are, making it the ideal channel to ride the wave of economic optimism.

Maximize cost-efficiency: Acting before demand spikes allows advertisers to lock in value and reach.

Media is the heartbeat of consumer engagement. As the economy warms up, businesses that invest in media advertising now will benefit from increased reach, stronger ROI, and a lasting brand impression over their competitors that can lead to gains in market share.

As small and medium-sized businesses in the Seattle-Tacoma region prepare to capitalize on renewed economic momentum and easing interest rates, Bonneville Seattle Media stands as the premier partner to amplify their growth. With trusted local brands such as KIRO Newsradio, MyNorthwest.com, Seattle Sports 710, SeattleSports.com, Seattle Red and SeattleRed.com, along with an internal digital agency, AIM, Bonneville Seattle Media provides businesses with expansive reach, and data-driven advertising solutions that empower businesses to connect with engaged, affluent audiences ready to spend.

Medicare open enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, giving beneficiaries a crucial opportunity to review and change their plans.

Medicare open enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, giving beneficiaries a crucial opportunity to review and change their plans. To help Washington residents prepare, the Office of the Insurance Commissioner has launched a free Medicare Open Enrollment Jumpstart Toolkit — a practical resource designed to simplify the process and reduce confusion and stress.

What the Jumpstart Toolkit includes

✅ A large envelope to organize all Medicare-related mail.

✅ A coverage “menu” to match your Medicare and health cards.

✅ A fill-in form to track changes in your current plan.

✅ Personalized scenarios to help you understand your options.

✅ Information on Extra Help programs to assist with Medicare costs.

What you should do now

Order your FREE Jumpstart Toolkit from the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.

Create a Medicare.gov account if you don’t already have one.

Gather all Medicare mail and keep it in the toolkit envelope.

Watch for your Annual Notice of Change letter from your current plan before Oct. 15.

Why it matters

Medicare plans can change yearly — costs, coverage, and providers may shift. Reviewing your plan ensures it still meets your needs and budget. The toolkit helps you stay organized and informed, whether you’re doing it alone or with a trusted friend or family member.

Visit the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner’s website to order your toolkit and start preparing today.

Free, unbiased help from SHIBA you can trust

Navigating Medicare can be overwhelming — but you don’t have to do it alone. Washington’s Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) program, offered through the Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC), provides free, confidential, and unbiased assistance to help you make informed decisions.

What SHIBA offers

One-on-one counseling from trained volunteers.

Help by phone, online, or in person—whatever works best for you.

Guidance on Medicare plans, including Part A, B, C, and D.

Support with billing issues, appeals, and fraud prevention.

Help creating or navigating your Medicare.gov account.

Why SHIBA is different

✅ No sales pressure — SHIBA volunteers don’t sell insurance.

✅ Trusted by the state — it’s part of the Washington OIC.

✅ Focused on your needs — no commissions or company agendas.

Whether you’re new to Medicare or reviewing your plan during Open Enrollment, SHIBA is a reliable resource to help you understand your options and make confident choices.

To connect with SHIBA, visit the Washington state OIC website by clicking the link here.

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your heating, air conditioning, or heat pump system, 2025 is the year to act.

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your heating, air conditioning, or heat pump system, 2025 is the year to act. Thanks to generous federal tax credits, state rebates, and utility incentives, homeowners can save on energy-efficient upgrades. But these savings won’t last forever; in fact they are set to end on December 31, 2025.

Here is what you need to know:

Federal Tax Credits Are Ending

Under the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C), homeowners can claim:

30% of the project cost, up to:

$2,000 for qualified heat pumps and ductless systems

$1,200 for insulation, windows, doors, and other envelope improvements

Annual cap: $3,200 per household

These credits are only available for systems installed before December 31, 2025. After that, the federal credits will no longer be available.

Stackable local rebates in Washington

In the area, utility providers like Puget Sound Energy, Seattle City Light, and Tacoma Power offer rebates ranging from $300 to more than $8,000 for qualifying HVAC upgrades. These can be combined with federal tax credits for maximum savings.

Installation and maximizing your savings made easy

A trusted HVAC provider will:

Ensures your system qualifies for all available rebates and credits

Offer instant rebates (no paperwork or waiting)

Provides expert installation and documentation for tax filing

Helps you lock in savings before the deadline

Recommendation – Home Comfort Alliance

Compare the Savings: Now vs. Later

Prostate cancer is a very serious disease, but most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it. Many treatment options are available, especially in Seattle.

Tim Hunter spent his entire career in entertainment. The legendary local radio host retired in 2024 after 35 years behind the microphone, but continues heading up his own production company. Always full of energy and ready to crack a joke, the self-described “goofball” was stopped in his tracks upon hearing the two words all too common for men aged 55 and over: prostate cancer.

During his annual physical, doctors observed Hunter’s PSA levels had climbed into “uh oh territory.” Hunter is no stranger to prostate cancer. At his age, he can count at least half a dozen friends who have been diagnosed with and undergone treatment for prostate cancer. In fact, the American Cancer Society states that one in eight men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. For men who are 65 or older, that number climbs to about six in 10. For African American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer, the risk is higher.

Learning you have prostate cancer can come as a shock. There are a lot of things to think about before you and your care team choose the treatment that is best for you. When detected early, prostate cancer is highly treatable. Most men diagnosed with prostate cancer survive. Depending on your unique situation, you will find there are many treatment options available, especially in Seattle.

Hunter immediately began researching treatments. He spoke with his friends and former colleagues who had undergone prostate cancer treatment. He read emails, article links, and books. What he found was that many treatments can be effective in eliminating cancer cells. Hunter thought, “If different approaches can all be effective in curing prostate cancer, which treatment will get me there the easiest, fastest, and with less interruption in my daily life?”

Two radio voices meet

Friends and colleagues of Dave Wyman often quip, “You’ve become the expert on Swedish CyberKnife” to which Wyman usually launches into the slogan, “Five treatments all less than an hour each, less side effects than other treatments, and the most technologically advanced treatment in the Pacific Northwest.” Wyman has endorsed Swedish CyberKnife for prostate cancer treatment on Seattle Sports since 2021. Tim Hunter first heard of Swedish CyberKnife from Dave Wyman, and he’s glad he did. After undergoing successful treatment, Hunter volunteered to share his personal testimonial, hoping others would hear it.

While interviewing Hunter about his prostate cancer treatment experience, Dave Wyman asked, “When you learned about Swedish CyberKnife, you must have thought, ‘this is too good to be true?'” Indeed, Hunter chose Swedish CyberKnife for his prostate cancer treatment and was raving about his experience and results. His treatment was completed in less than a week. Each treatment lasted between 35 and 45 minutes. From the time he left his house to the time he arrived home, about an hour and fifteen minutes in total had passed.

In addition to the swiftness of the treatment course, Hunter appreciated the minimal interruption to his daily life. Most of his friends who had undergone prostate cancer treatment did so with options other than CyberKnife. He heard stories of inserted catheters, wearing diapers, surgery, and weeks of radiation treatment. After Hunter completed his treatment, he remarked, “Huh, that’s it?”

Post-treatment care

Now that Hunter’s PSA levels have decreased from over 12 to less than 2, he’s on a six-month recall, meaning he has an appointment every six months to monitor his PSA levels. The care he received and continues to receive from Swedish is excellent.

“It’s about what you would expect from Swedish.”

Now, in addition to entertaining and making others laugh, Hunter rejoices in telling others of his experience. He hopes adult men will get their PSA levels checked and, if diagnosed with prostate cancer, schedule a consultation with Swedish CyberKnife at Swedish.org/cyberknifeprostate.

In 7 Steps to a Successful Retirement, CPA and advisor Brian Evans lays out a clear, principle-driven roadmap to help individuals transition from working years to a comfortable retirement.

In 7 Steps to a Successful Retirement, CPA and advisor Brian Evans lays out a clear, principle-driven roadmap to help individuals transition from working years to a comfortable retirement. The book is especially valuable for those with savings but no cohesive plan for how to turn that nest egg into a sustainable, tax-efficient income. Drawing from decades of experience as a CPA and wealth advisor, Evans emphasizes that success in retirement isn’t just about having enough money; it’s about knowing how to use it.

Why Retirement Planning Is Different

In the book, Evans begins by dispelling common myths: retirement planning isn’t just about investment returns. It’s about integrating lifestyle goals, taxes, income needs, and long-term risks. Retirement is complex, and overly simplified strategies can leave investors vulnerable to market downturns, tax surprises, or running out of money. He introduces the metaphor of a tree, flourishing on the surface isn’t enough. What matters is how deep your financial “roots” go.

Step 1: Lifestyle Planning

Most retirement plans start with money. Evans flips that. Instead, he asks, “What do you want your life to look like? What will get you out of bed every day?” Retirement without purpose, he argues, is a recipe for depression. Before budgeting or investing, he recommends defining how you’ll spend your time and aligning your financial decisions accordingly.

Step 2: Cash Flow Planning

The key question isn’t “How much do I need to retire?” but “How much income do I need, and where will it come from?” Evans shows how two people with the same portfolio value may have vastly different outcomes depending on lifestyle and tax strategy. He warns against relying too heavily on the “4% rule” and explains how sequence-of-return risk can derail an otherwise solid plan.

Step 3: Portfolio Planning

Evans presents five core benefits your money can deliver: liquidity, protection, cash flow, growth, and tax advantages. He emphasizes that no investment can offer all five. Instead of searching for a “perfect” investment, retirees should identify their personal priorities and build a blended portfolio using the six available markets: cash, bonds, equities, insurance products, real estate, and alternatives. Diversifying across these markets can help reduce risk while preserving upside.

Step 4: Tax Planning

Taxes are often the largest expense in retirement. Evans provides a practical framework for understanding the four “flavors” of taxation: deductions, credits, tax-deferred income, and tax-free growth. Strategies like Roth conversions, using life insurance for tax-free income, and leveraging 1031 exchanges for real estate investors can help you grow your wealth while you enjoy it in retirement. The goal is not necessarily a zero-tax bracket, but rather an optimized tax profile tailored to your situation.

Step 5: Protection Planning

A comprehensive retirement plan also prepares for potential disruptions: market crashes, lawsuits, long-term care needs, and health emergencies. Evans outlines how tools like umbrella insurance, long-term care insurance, and asset titling can protect your wealth from unexpected events. He stresses that without protection planning, even the best investment portfolio can unravel.

Step 6: Gift Planning

Many retirees want to share their wealth during their lifetime. Whether it’s helping children with college, supporting causes, or contributing to grandchildren’s education, Evans explains how gifting strategies can be structured to be both tax-efficient and emotionally fulfilling. He explores donor-advised funds, gifting appreciated assets, and the importance of documenting intentions to avoid misunderstandings.

Step 7: Legacy Planning

A successful retirement plan doesn’t end when you do. Evans walks readers through essential estate planning tools like wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and so on. Legacy planning isn’t just about transferring wealth. It’s about protecting family relationships, reducing tax burdens, and making sure your money supports the values you care about most.

Final Thoughts

Evans concludes with a concept he calls the “Four Levels of Financial Competence,” encouraging readers to move from basic financial understanding to a stage where they can adapt to changing laws, markets, and life events. He also acknowledges that retirement planning is rarely DIY-friendly. Even sophisticated investors can miss critical blind spots. That’s why he encourages working with professionals who can integrate tax, investment, and lifestyle planning under one roof.

Ultimately, 7 Steps to a Successful Retirement is not just a financial guide. It’s a holistic playbook for building a life of security, purpose, and freedom. Whether you’re five years from retirement or already in it, the book equips you with the insight to grow deep financial roots and weather whatever storms may come.

The Salvation Army’s Seattle Adult Rehabilitation Program (ARP) helps people find healing and lifelong sobriety.

After a recent knee surgery, I find myself on the road to a long recovery. As my leg mends, I contemplate what life would be like in a constant state of recovery.

For men in The Salvation Army’s Seattle Adult Rehabilitation Program (ARP) — a no-cost, six-month addiction recovery program – their journeys have just begun. They enter the program lost, broken, addicted, and hopeless. While long-term healing and restoration with family and friends seems bleak, Captains John and Kyna Kelley see a future full of love, hope, and new beginnings. They believe that every person can be pulled from the wreckage of addiction and fulfill their purpose in life.

As a national and King County advisory board member for The Salvation Army, I wholeheartedly believe in the program and know it transforms lives. In fact, I recently hired a program graduate to work on the Tatley-Grund construction team. He is a living testimony. And so is Tracy Ledoux.

Embracing a new path to redemption

Tracy’s journey is one of many that showcase the life-changing impact of The Salvation Army. After experiencing childhood trauma, addiction took hold of Tracy at an early age, leading him through decades of struggle, from jail time to homelessness, from broken relationships to despair.

“I remember waking up one morning on the floor of a trap house, using my backpack of stolen tools as a pillow,” Tracy said. “I looked around at the people I called ‘friends,’ lost in a haze of fentanyl smoke, and I thought to myself, ‘This isn’t me. This isn’t who I was meant to be.’ That was the moment I knew I had to change.”

With the support of The Salvation Army, Tracy embraced a new path — one of faith, recovery, and renewal. Through the ARP, he not only found sobriety but rebuilt his relationships, restored his self-worth, and reclaimed his future.

“A faith-based program was the last place I wanted to be,” she said. “I had abandoned God long ago. But the deeper I got into the program, the more I realized that maybe, just maybe, letting God in could save my life. And he did.”

How and why the ARP works

In 2024, more than 40 other men like Tracy found redemption and purpose by graduating from the ARP.

The ARP offers a three-bridge approach that allows participants an intensive six-month residential recovery program, an additional two months of in-house work development, assistance finding a job, and an additional six months of independent living in the Charis Place transitional housing facility that provides a supportive sober community. All at no cost.

The Salvation Army’s addiction recovery program works because it focuses on physical, emotional, and spiritual growth. Healing the mind, body, and soul to break the destructive cycle of addiction. In addition, men are equipped with the career, social, and life skills they need to succeed post-graduation by obtaining employment and permanent housing. And when someone graduates from the program, they have a lifelong support network of mentors/sponsors.

“My personal experience with recovery has been life-changing. I also know that it would not have been possible without my health insurance covering the prohibitive cost of inpatient recovery. I know that most people don’t enjoy that luxury. That’s what makes this opportunity through the Salvation Army ARP such a blessing,” KIRO host Spike O’Neill said. “I’ve seen firsthand the care, compassion, and dedication exhibited at the APR, as well as the life-changing results it helps produce. I know the work that they do on behalf of these individuals and the rewards it produces are beyond measure!”

The national average success rate for a six-month addiction recovery program is 10%. The Salvation Army Seattle Adult Rehabilitation Program’s success rate is 38% — nearly four times the national average. When graduates remain connected to the program for at least two years, 86% of alumni stay sober.

Join me in the ‘fight for good’

I urge you to join me in the “fight for good” and support a program that is clearly getting real results. Results that equal transformed lives. Hope renewed. Families restored.

One fun way you can help is by joining me for the Red Shield Classic Golf Tournament on Sept. 11 at Echo Falls Golf Club in Snohomish, benefiting The Salvation Army Seattle Adult Rehabilitation Program. You can donate online or sign up for a team at The Red Shield Classic to benefit The Salvation Army’s Addiction Recovery Program.

As life grows more unpredictable, estate planning is emerging as a critical tool for individuals and families to protect their interests and ensure their wishes are honored.

As life grows more unpredictable, estate planning is emerging as a critical tool for individuals and families to protect their interests and ensure their wishes are honored. Once considered a concern only for the wealthy or elderly, estate planning is now recognized as essential for anyone seeking to safeguard their health, finances, and loved ones.

Why estate planning matters

Estate planning is more than deciding who inherits your assets. It’s about preparing for the unexpected — illness, incapacity, or death — and ensuring that your voice is heard even when you can’t speak for yourself. According to recent reports, many Americans still lack basic estate planning documents, leaving families vulnerable to legal complications and emotional stress.

Key components of a comprehensive estate plan include:

Last will and testament: Specifies how assets should be distributed and names guardians for minor children.

Durable powers of attorney: Designates individuals to make financial and healthcare decisions if you’re incapacitated.

Advance directives: Outlines medical preferences and end-of-life care instructions.

Disposition authorization: Provides guidance on how remains should be handled.

Community property agreement: Included for married individuals to streamline ownership transfer.

Experts emphasize that estate planning isn’t just about death — it’s about maintaining control during life-altering events. Without proper documentation, courts may appoint decision-makers who don’t reflect your values or wishes, which can lead to costly and emotionally draining legal proceedings.

All Orbit Wills documents are reviewed by a licensed Washington attorney from our affiliate law firm, and are available to download within three business days.

When to start planning

Although it’s never a fun topic, the best time to begin estate planning is now. Milestones such as turning 18, having children, or buying property are all triggers for updating or creating a plan. Even young adults should consider powers of attorney, as parents lose legal authority to act on their behalf once they reach adulthood.

For example, when you get married, it is a very important time to update your will, ensuring that your spouse is included in your will, and that you can make sure they’re looked after when you’re gone. Similarly, divorce changes a lot about your life, including your finances. After a divorce, updating your will to remove them as a beneficiary is a crucial step.

Even a significant change in income could require a change or update to estate planning. If a change of income, particularly one that can affect your tax bracket, occurs, it could alter how you decide to distribute your estate. Additionally, if you suddenly become the beneficiary of a trust or inherit a large sum of money or property, it’s important to factor that into your will.

Estate plans should also evolve over time. Financial advisors recommend reviewing documents every three to five years or after major life changes. This ensures your plan remains relevant and reflects current wishes, assets, and relationships.

Making estate planning accessible

Services like Orbit Wills are helping to demystify the process by offering affordable, attorney-reviewed estate plans online. In just 15 minutes, users can begin creating documents that cover asset distribution, healthcare decisions, and guardianship instructions. Plans are delivered within three business days and range from $299 to $799, depending on the age and marital status of the individual.

Orbit Wills also highlights lesser-known facts, such as the legal limitations parents face once a child turns 18. Without a durable power of attorney, parents may be unable to assist with medical or financial matters, even if the child still lives at home. For college students or young adults entering the workforce, this document can be critical.

In addition, Orbit Wills includes state-specific considerations. For example, Washington residents benefit from streamlined community property agreements, which can simplify the transfer of assets between spouses and reduce probate complications.

Estate planning for families

Families face unique challenges when planning for the future. Guardianship designations for minor children are particularly important, as courts will otherwise make these decisions without parental input. Trusts can also play a pivotal role in managing wealth across generations, offering flexibility and privacy while helping avoid the delays and expenses associated with probate.

Orbit Wills provides guidance tailored to family structures and dynamics, whether you’re a single parent, a blended family, or caring for elderly relatives. The goal is to offer peace of mind through clear documentation and accessible legal support.

A growing awareness

As more Americans recognize the importance of planning ahead, estate planning is becoming a standard part of financial wellness. Whether through traditional legal channels or modern online platforms, the goal remains the same: to provide clarity, reduce burdens, and protect what matters most.

In an era where digital convenience meets legal expertise, Orbit Wills stands out by offering solutions that are both accessible and dependable. For those ready to take the first step, resources like orbitwills.com offer a practical starting point — because the future is worth planning for.

Recent studies suggest that Bigg's orcas may have more vocal variation than once thought.

Humans aren’t the only mammals with a lot to say. The region’s orcas are frequently communicating beneath the water’s surface, using a rich vocabulary of sounds.

Unlike the endangered Southern Residents population, whose calls are tightly patterned and used for complex group cohesion, Bigg’s orcas (also known as transients) tend to vocalize less while hunting since their prey (like seals and porpoises) can hear them coming.

But when they aren’t actively on the hunt, they can be surprisingly chatty.

“It’s like turning up the volume on a family reunion,” Puget Sound Express captain/naturalist EJ Tilt said.

Researchers and whale watchers use hydrophones to help track orcas. The recorded calls range from high-pitched squeals to rhythmic pulsing–some even sounding like whistles or clicks from a sci-fi movie. Certain calls can identify not just species, but specific families. Recent studies suggest that Bigg’s orcas may have more vocal variation than once thought.

Last year, two families of Bigg’s killer whales–the T99s and the T36s–moved through local waters, seemingly greeting and connecting beneath the surface. The scene was captured on video by the crew of Puget Sound Express, who also dropped a hydrophone into the water to record a chorus of vocalizations. For many on board, it was their first time hearing orcas “speak” in real time.

“These calls give us goosebumps,” Tilt said. “Each family has its own acoustic signature, and these two groups were being especially vocal. It was likely a mix of communication and social bonding.”

Hearing these wild sounds live offers a sense of connection to the denizens of the Salish Sea.

“It reminds us that they’re not just passing through–they’re talking, interacting, being fully alive out there,” Tilt said.

When it comes to transforming your kitchen into the heart of your home, J&M Remodel stands out as a trusted partner in the Seattle area.

When it comes to transforming your kitchen into the heart of your home, J&M Remodel stands out as a trusted partner in the Seattle area. With a commitment to quality craftsmanship and personalized service, Justin and Mandy Schuder’s family-owned business has been helping homeowners realize their dream kitchens for over two decades.

Understanding your vision

The journey to your dream kitchen begins with understanding your unique vision. J&M Remodel takes pride in listening closely and translating ideas into reality—whether you’re dreaming of a sleek, modern space or a warm, traditional design.

“There are endless possibilities,” J&M Remodel co-owner Mandy Schuder said. “You are not locked into the original footprint—you can think outside the box in terms of moving walls, windows, doors, etc.”

Comprehensive design and planning

J&M Remodel’s process is designed to be thorough and transparent. It begins with an initial estimate, followed by: A detailed, itemized budget, material selection, and permit acquisition.

They guide clients through every step—from consultation to final walkthrough.

“For larger projects, it’s often worth it to have a designer involved,” Schuder said. “It can save you money and headaches in the long run. With J&M purposefully not having in-house design, it allows for multiple professional advocates for the client.”

She also emphasized the importance of planning for long-term goals like resale value, aging in place, and energy efficiency.

Collaborative approach with professional designers

Rather than relying on a single in-house designer, J&M partners with multiple professionals to give clients a broader range of creative input.

“We feel it’s better to have more outside choices to give our clients more advocates,” Schuder explained. “When you work with a design-build company, you get a lot of repetitiveness. We want our clients to have options of difference to match their ideal kitchen.”

Embracing the latest kitchen trends

J&M Remodel stays ahead of the curve by incorporating the latest innovations, including smart home technologies and flush and enhanced cabinetry. Also, soft, warm color palettes for a cozy, inviting feel.

Their designs strike a balance between modern functionality and timeless style.

Quality craftsmanship

At the heart of J&M Remodel is a commitment to quality. Their in-house crew—many of whom have been with the company for years—ensures consistency and care in every detail.

“All of J&M’s work is done in-house, except for specialty licensure tasks,” Schuder said. We have a crew that has been with us for a long time. We are a family-run company and interact with each other as family.”

Customer satisfaction

J&M Remodel is known for its transparency, professionalism, and client-first approach. They understand that remodeling is a major investment and work hard to make the process smooth and stress-free.

“Budget is a challenge at times,” Schuder shared. “Materials have increased, subcontractor pricing has gone up, but we do everything we can to bid accurately before we start the project—and work with the client if things need to change.”

Clients consistently praise the team’s clear communication, flexibility, and dedication to getting it right.

Bringing your dream kitchen to life

For J&M Remodel, the most rewarding part of the job is seeing a vision come to life.

“Watching a beautiful idea come off the plan-set and seeing the thrill of our happy clients who get to enjoy their new space—that’s what it’s all about,” Schuder said.

They also take pride in supporting their crew’s growth:

“We’ve seen many of our guys buy their first homes while employed with us, get married, etc. Employing a great crew and watching them grow professionally is one of the best parts of what we do,” Schuder continued.

A remodel you can trust

At J&M Remodel, every kitchen is more than just a project—it’s a personal investment in your home and your future. With a foundation built on family values, long-term vision, and a passion for craftsmanship, Justin and Mandy Schuder have created a remodeling experience that’s as thoughtful as it is transformative.

Discover how Lacey Mayor Andy Ryder benefited from CyberKnife's non-invasive treatment, changing his life in just five days.

Andy Ryder was confirming last-minute details with his wife prior to their trip to Palm Springs. They were flying out the next day for a week-long respite to replace the gloomy and cold Washington Spring with much-needed California sunshine and warmth.

While on speakerphone, Andy received a notification saying his test results were ready to view. The blood rushed to his head as a feeling of panic overwhelmed him. His suspicions were confirmed when he opened his email and read the words no one ever wants to see: “You have cancer.”

Diagnosed with prostate cancer at the way too early age of 48, Andy didn’t know what to think. Moreover, he didn’t want “cancer patient” to define him. Andy Ryder is the city of Lacey’s longest-serving mayor, in office since 2014 and currently serving his sixth term. He’s also the longest-serving current mayor in the state of Washington. Additionally, Andy is a business owner, husband, and incredibly active in his community.

After digesting the news with his family, Andy’s mind immediately went to treatment. His primary care physician referred him to several specialists and set up meetings. Andy and his wife attended the appointments and took stock of their options: surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy.

The doctors he met with highly recommended surgery, but that didn’t sit well with Andy and his wife. They thought surgery to be incredibly invasive, painful, and with a long recovery time. After prostate surgery, patients are required to wear a catheter, which can be incredibly uncomfortable. There was also the threat of permanent damage to nearby vital nerves, negatively affecting urinary and sexual function.

Other options required considerable treatment time and recovery. Having a busy schedule with what amounted to be two full-time jobs, being out of commission for several months was a non-starter.

Andy and his wife didn’t feel any of the treatments were the right one, and there was another factor in the equation—they failed to create a strong connection with the care teams and physicians they met. Treatment for cancer, specifically prostate cancer, is a very delicate and personal matter. Forging a strong connection and relationship with the treatment care team was an unchecked box. Back to square one and feeling frustrated about the process, Andy gained optimism from a familiar source.

Lacey mayor hears about Swedish Cyberknife on Seattle Sports

A lifelong Seattle sports fan and Seahawks, Mariners, Sounders, and Sonics season ticket holder, Andy was listening to his favorite radio station (Seattle Sports) when he heard the familiar and trusted voice of former Seahawk and afternoon drive radio host Dave Wyman describe a revolutionary treatment for prostate cancer.

Andy turned up the volume, “Five-day treatment course with each session lasting less than an hour. The treatments are non-invasive and have far less side effects compared with other treatment options. Additionally, this technologically advanced treatment precisely targets only the cancer cells while sparing nearby organs, nerves, and tissue. The treatment is CyberKnife and is available right here in Seattle at Swedish.”

A rush of optimism overcame Andy. Not only did a treatment option exist that quelled his fears, but it was endorsed by a person he trusted from a reputable media source. Andy immediately got in touch with Swedish CyberKnife to see if the treatment was too good to be true.

Finding the right doctor

Dr. Daniel Landis spends most of his evenings like virtually every parent in western Washington, taking turns with his wife, shuttling their kids around from school to activities. His day job is treating cancer, and he’s exceptional at it. Harvard-educated, Dr. Landis earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Washington, studying resistance to chemotherapy in cancer treatment. He’s received the Seattle Top Doctor Award more times than he’d humbly admit and is a 2024 Seattle Magazine and Seattle Met Magazine Top Doc Award winner. Dr. Landis is just one of several accomplished physicians at Swedish CyberKnife.

Andy first met Dr. Landis during a Zoom consultation. Andy was taken aback by Dr. Landis not pushing a treatment on him like he had experienced with other doctors. Instead, Dr. Landis patiently answered every one of Andy’s questions. It was clear Dr. Landis was not only an expert in prostate cancer and treatment but also had a tremendous bedside manner. It became clear that Swedish CyberKnife was the right treatment Andy and his wife were searching for, and this was the care and relationship he was seeking.

Going through the week-long treatment

Andy scheduled treatment to begin in September 2024 during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. He selected a week, Monday to Friday, for his five consecutive treatments. He could have commuted each day, but decided to stay in Seattle with his wife and make a week out of it. After such a stressful and uncertain time in his life, Andy was so relieved and excited for his treatment that he wanted to have fun with it. He scootered to the Swedish campus each day and wore funny outfits. Treatments consisted of lying down for about 45 minutes while the robotic arm seemingly hovered above him and rid him of his prostate cancer. Andy listened to music and even took a quick nap. By the time Friday came around, he couldn’t believe it would be the end of the major portion of his treatment. He felt sad saying goodbye to the team at Swedish CyberKnife and Dr. Landis.

Immediately after treatment, Andy felt tired but reported no side effects. Two weeks after his treatment commenced, Lacey’s sister city in Poland sent a large delegation to visit. Andy spent the entire week with the party, showing them around, and attending functions. The delegation from Minsk Mazowiecki could not believe that just two weeks prior, he was undergoing prostate cancer treatment. Had Andy chosen any other treatment option, he does not believe he would have been able to fulfill this very important obligation.

Lacey mayor celebrates being cancer free after using CyberKnife

Andy is cancer-free. He carries the youthful exuberance of a man half his age. More importantly, he carries a perspective that can change and save lives. He’s proud of his prostate cancer treatment and encourages any adult male who will listen to get their PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels checked annually. A simple blood test is all it takes. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in males. On average, one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.

If diagnosed with prostate cancer, Andy recommends doing research with your family and care team about treatment options. Based on his experience, he strongly recommends to begin by scheduling a consultation with Swedish CyberKnife.

Discover effective lifestyle changes to lower blood pressure and enhance your overall health during National High Blood Pressure Education Month.

With May being National High Blood Pressure Education Month, now is a great time to reflect on staying healthy.

About half of American adults have high blood pressure, but only about 25% of them have it under control. Undiagnosed or untreated high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can put a person at higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious health problems.

MyNorthwest spoke with Western Washington Medical Group Cardiologist Dr. Thomas Richardson, Jr. about five lifestyle changes that can help you lower your blood pressure.

Start the day with exercise and a well-rounded breakfast

The best way to start the day is with exercise and a healthy breakfast, according to Richardson. He encourages people to exercise first thing in the morning, as he found it’s harder for most folks to get moving after work.

“You’ll feel better and be more productive during the day, and if you do it consistently every day, it’ll lower your blood pressure,” he said.

As for breakfast, get rid of the cereal, along with the bacon and eggs, recommends Richardson. Instead, try slow-cooked oatmeal with fruit.

“People tend to eat the same thing for breakfast every day,” he added. “So it’s an easy meal to kind of decide, okay, this is what I’m going to change.”

Moving to the afternoon and evening, Richardson said people should be aware of what types of snacks they’re eating.

“Snacks are big source of sodium, and especially when people are at work. They’re dealing with stress, and if you have food around you that’s unhealthy, full of sodium, you’re going to eat whatever’s around you,” he shared. “So if you just make a habit of, every weekend, when you’re shopping, making sure that you get a lot of healthy snacks, you’re always going to the office with some fruit, some nuts, some vegetables, healthy things that you can eat.”

Richardson said snacking awareness will not only lower blood pressure but also can improve overall health.

Make healthier food choices

Looking more at diet, Richardson noted that cutting out red meat and processed foods in favor of a plant-based approach can also promote good health.

“The standard American diet is from animal products, so beef, chicken, turkey, pork, eggs, dairy products, plus processed food, and all of those things together will increase a person’s blood pressure,” he shared.

Most of the sodium that people get from their diet comes from processed food, and the added sodium that is put into that food. So, to reduce sodium intake, Richardson recommends moving in the direction of a plant-based diet.

“If someone goes to a whole food, meaning no processed food, plant-based diet, that means eating vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds—no meat, no eggs, no dairy—that can lower their blood pressure about 12 millimeters of mercury, which is the same effect as a full dose of blood pressure medication,” he said.

Prioritize a good night’s sleep

Going into the night, the next habit that impacts blood pressure is sleep. Richardson said getting less than six hours of sleep a night will raise blood pressure.

“Really, trying to get seven to nine hours of restorative sleep every night will help lower the blood pressure,” he shared. A good night’s rest also supports immune health, blood sugar regulation, attention, and mental and physical well-being.

Cut back on alcohol and smoking

Another lifestyle change Richardson recommends is cutting back on alcohol and smoking.

“Generally, for heart disease or for overall health, the less alcohol you drink, the better,” he said. “If you do drink alcohol, try to limit it to one drink a day, because more than that will tend to raise blood pressure. So trying to avoid that and trying to avoid smoking will reduce your risk.”

Get your blood pressure checked

Richardson said that many Americans don’t know they have high blood pressure and only find out when they start experiencing symptoms like headaches, blurred vision, or difficulty breathing. But if you get checked before that happens, high blood pressure can be managed successfully to help you avoid serious problems later.

Amid High Blood Pressure Awareness Month, these tips offer a strong starting point for a healthier lifestyle.

If you are under a lot of stress, have a family history of high blood pressure, or simply would like to get checked, the best place to start is with your primary care provider. Get started today with the caring team at Western Washington Medical Group.

Life in the Pacific Northwest offers stunning natural beauty—from misty mornings to evergreen-covered hills—but it also comes with its share of challenges, including increasingly frequent windstorms and power outages.

These outages can leave families without heat, lights, internet, and refrigeration for hours—or even days. Battery backup systems offer a reliable, seamless solution by instantly supplying power the moment the grid goes down, helping homeowners stay safe, comfortable, and connected.

Electrical Design Specialist: Power outages ‘disrupt lives’

“Power outages are more than just an inconvenience—they disrupt lives,” said Gaige Gray, Electrical Design Specialist at Home Comfort Alliance. “Our battery backup systems provide fast, silent, automatic power. It’s seamless and safe.”

Whether it’s keeping the HVAC running, the fridge cold, or lights on during a blackout, battery systems ensure your home remains functional no matter the weather.

Why use battery backups?

Battery backup systems are a smart investment for Washington homeowners, offering:

Unmatched reliability: Stay powered during outages caused by storms, downed lines, or infrastructure failures.

Energy independence: Reduce reliance on the utility grid and keep critical systems running when it matters most.

Year-round peace of mind: Ensure comfort and safety during extended outages—especially important for families with medical or remote work needs.

Cost efficiency: Avoid expensive peak utility rates by using stored power when energy prices are highest.

Home Comfort Alliance gives homeowners an advantage

Home Comfort Alliance goes beyond simply installing a system—it provides long-term peace of mind. The company’s licensed electricians handle everything: consultation, system design, permitting, installation, and ongoing support.

“We’ve seen these systems change lives—especially for families that experience frequent outages or rely on medical equipment,” Gray said. “This isn’t just backup power. It’s about protecting your home and your peace of mind.”

Battery backup is more than a convenience—it’s a smart investment in resilience, comfort, and control. Home Comfort Alliance helps residents stay powered through whatever the Pacific Northwest weather brings.

Discover how State Roofing and Exteriors is expanding with new offices in Western Washington, enhancing service for homeowners.

For more than five decades, State Roofing has been a trusted name for homeowners across Western Washington. Now, the company is launching a bold new chapter—unveiling a refreshed identity as State Roofing and Exteriors, along with the opening of new office locations.

“We’ve always been known for roofing, but our expertise has grown far beyond that,” said Justin Shirley, CEO of State Roofing and Exteriors, during an interview on the “Home Matters” podcast with KIRO Newsradio and KTTH. “We’ve been building decks, installing windows and siding, and transforming the exterior of homes across the region for years — now our name reflects the full scope of what we do.”

While roofing remains the cornerstone of the company’s business, Justin emphasized the rising demand for comprehensive exterior solutions.

“Last year alone, we completed over 750 residential roof installs — but that was only part of the picture,” Justin said. “We also completed countless decking projects, siding installations, window replacements, and even some insulation work. Our rebrand is about helping homeowners see us as the all-in-one exterior partner we’ve always been.”

A full range of services

Many homeowners are still discovering the breadth of what the company offers. Justin shared a recent experience that underscores the value of making that message clear.

“A customer came in asking about roofing,” he recalled. “When they saw our showroom and samples, they asked, ‘Wait — do you also do decking?’ And I told them, absolutely. We’ve done decking for decades. The conversation quickly turned into a full exterior consultation. They wanted us to look at their siding and windows too. That’s exactly why this rebrand is so important — people deserve to know everything we can help them with.”

That mindset shift also brings up another important factor for homeowners: financing.

“Most of the homes we work on are older, and when you’re looking at your roof, you’re often noticing other areas that need attention too — like the siding, or the windows,” Justin said. “Rather than stretching out multiple projects over several years, many families prefer to bundle everything together and get it done at once. We work closely with trusted banks and financing partners to help make that possible.”

New offices in Snohomish and Pierce Counties

The rebrand also comes with major growth. After decades of calling Monroe home, State Roofing and Exteriors has expanded its footprint with a new corporate office and showroom in Tacoma, along with a second office now under construction in Marysville.

“Monroe will always be part of our story, but we’ve grown beyond what that single location can support,” Justin said. “In January 2023, we opened a beautiful showroom and office in Tacoma. It’s fully staffed, open from 8 to 6, and ready for anyone who wants to walk in, talk with our team, and explore options for their home.”

The Marysville office, located just off 88th and State Avenue, will serve as the northern hub for the company.

“Even without signage up yet, we’re seeing people come in just from recognizing our trucks,” Justin shared. “It’s exciting to see that kind of trust already building in the community.”

With a strong presence now covering both the north and south ends of Western Washington, the company is well-positioned to serve homeowners from Vancouver to the Canadian border — and everywhere in between.

“From Tacoma, we can serve the South Sound and even reach over to the Peninsula,” said Justin. “And Marysville gives us coverage across Snohomish, Skagit, and beyond. It’s all part of our goal to be the most accessible and dependable exterior contractor in the region.”

Looking ahead

As State Roofing and Exteriors steps into this new era, the mission remains the same: to deliver exceptional service, high-quality craftsmanship, and lasting solutions that homeowners can count on.

“This rebrand isn’t just about a name change—it’s showing our customers that we’re able to provide a solution for all their exterior needs,” said Justin. “We’re proud of our history, and even more excited about what’s ahead. Whether it’s roofing, siding, windows, or decking, we’re here to help homeowners protect and improve the place they call home.”

With expanded services, new showrooms, and a continued focus on trust and integrity, State Roofing and Exteriors remains committed to being held to a higher standard since 1968—and that promise continues to guide everything they do across Western Washington.

Struggling with Medicare expenses? Discover programs that can help you save significantly each month on premiums.

If Medicare costs are stretching your budget, help is available. You may qualify for programs that could save you up to $185 each month on premiums, deductibles, copays, and prescription drug expenses. That’s more money back in your pocket—to buy groceries, pay rent, fill your gas tank, or even treat a friend to lunch.

There are two programs that can help you save.

Medicare Savings Programs

The first is the Medicare Savings Programs. This program helps qualified people on Medicare, pay for all or part of their Medicare premiums.

It may cover Medicare for those on Part A premiums (if the person has any costs), Part B premiums, coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles.

Low-Income Subsidy

The second program is the Low-Income Subsidy. This program helps qualified people on Medicare pay their Part D prescription drug plan costs.

Depending on income and asses, individuals may qualify for a full or partial subsidy to help pay for premiums, deductibles, copays, or the donut hole/coverage gap (this is when Medicare temporarily stops paying for your prescriptions and you must pay the entire cost of medications).

To find out if you qualify or to get help signing up for these programs, call 1-800-562-6900 and ask for your local Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisor (SHIBA) program or visit the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner’s website.

SHIBA is a free, unbiased, and confidential program of the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner. It does not sell anything and only offers education and counseling on Medicare options.

Deciding when it's time for senior living can be challenging. However, a senior living community can be a positive step toward ensuring safety, health and happiness.

Deciding when it’s time for senior living can be challenging. However, a new community can be a positive step toward ensuring safety, health and happiness.

Here are five key signs that it may be time to consider making this important transition:

Increasing care needs

One of the first indicators is the need for more personalized care. If daily tasks such as bathing, dressing and medication management are becoming difficult, it may be time to consider a community that offers tailored support. CarePartners Senior Living provides individualized care plans to ensure each resident receives the necessary assistance while maintaining their dignity.

Safety concerns

Concerns about safety, such as frequent falls, wandering or difficulty navigating the home, can signal it’s time for senior living. Communities like CarePartners provide a secure environment with professional oversight, ensuring residents are safe and supported.

Video: What kind of Senior will YOU be?

Declining health and well-being

If there are noticeable changes in health, such as weight loss, dehydration, or unmanaged medical conditions, senior living can offer comprehensive support services. CarePartners offers amenities like weekly housekeeping, linen service, and chef-prepared meals, ensuring residents’ health and well-being are prioritized.

Social isolation

Loneliness and social isolation can have severe impacts on mental and physical health. Senior living communities provide opportunities for social engagement through a variety of activities, social gatherings and special interest groups. CarePartners communities include amenities like libraries, game rooms and common areas to foster social interaction and a sense of community.

Caregiver burnout

Family members or friends providing care can experience burnout, which affects their health and ability to provide care. Transitioning to a senior living community can relieve this burden, allowing caregivers to focus on their well-being while ensuring their loved one receives professional care and support. CarePartners offers compassionate and supportive services, helping families make the transition smoothly.

It’s important to understand and evaluate options when it comes to exploring senior living options. It’s necessary to consider the level of care, location, cost and amenities available. CarePartners Senior Living Communities offer various options, including Vineyard Park and Select communities, which provide quality care tailored to individual needs.

CaresPartners Senior Living provides several options

Vineyard Park offers quality assisted living at competitive prices, focusing on wellness and independence. Located in several areas in Washington State, including Puyallup, Bothell, Mountlake Terrace, Covington, Lynden, North Creek, Bremerton and Mercer Island, these communities provide engaging social activities and personalized care.

For those with financial constraints, CarePartners’ Select communities offer quality assisted living and accept Medicaid admissions. Locations include Charlton Place in Tacoma, Maplewood Gardens in Spokane, Everett Plaza in Everett, Arbor Assisted Living, Olive Grove in Phoenix and Ocotillo Place in Scottsdale.

Senior living should blend care with independence and convenience. CarePartners provides services like scheduled transportation, general maintenance and chef-prepared meals, along with a variety of amenities to promote a fulfilling lifestyle.

Regional Director: ‘The light came back into their eyes’

There are vast benefits to a senior home. One is that senior facilities offer an all-inclusive lifestyle that eliminates the worries of home upkeep and property taxes. Residents can enjoy their golden years without the burden of maintaining a home.

Social support is another benefit as interaction is vital for the well-being of seniors. Living in a senior community provides ample opportunities for social engagement and community involvement, ensuring that residents remain active and connected.

“I’ve seen on numerous occasions someone coming from home that lived alone that moved in and the light came back into their eyes because they are developing friendships, partaking in activities, eating healthy food,” Amanda Kirilenko, Regional Director of Sales and Marketing of CarePartners Senior Living, told MyNorthwest.

Lastly, a major benefit is consistent medical support. Medical care and safety are paramount for seniors. Senior communities offer round-the-clock medical support and are equipped to handle various health needs, ensuring residents’ well-being.

Recognizing the signs that it’s time for senior living and understanding the available options can help make the transition smoother. Contact CarePartners Senior Living Communities online to learn more about how they can provide the care and support needed for a comfortable and fulfilling life.

Safeway and Albertson’s launched the Nourishing Neighbors program to ensure everyone has access to nourishing food every day.

Food insecurity is a pressing issue that affects several thousands of people in Washington. In response to this challenge, 10 years ago, Safeway and Albertson’s launched the Nourishing Neighbors program. This initiative aims to ensure everyone, including children, seniors and families, has access to nourishing food every day.

History of Nourishing Neighbors

Nourishing Neighbors reflects Safeway’s commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity. Since its inception, the program has implemented various initiatives to combat hunger. These include funding breakfast programs for children, providing summer meals, connecting families to federal nutrition programs and supporting school pantries. The program also focuses on holiday dinners and weekend backpack programs, ensuring children have food to take home when school is not in session

In 2023 alone, Nourishing Neighbors helped provide more than 40 million meals to those in need. The program also donated gift cards to 250,000 families, allowing them to purchase food for the holidays, and pledged $9 million in grants aimed at addressing the root causes of hunger.

Why give to the program?

Supporting the Nourishing Neighbors program is crucial for several reasons.

One of those reasons is addressing immediate needs. Donations help provide immediate relief to those struggling to put food on the table. This includes funding for meals and groceries that can make a significant difference in the daily lives of individuals and families. Another reason is supporting long-term solutions. Beyond immediate relief, donations support long-term solutions to food insecurity. This includes grants for innovative programs that tackle the underlying causes of hunger, such as poverty and lack of access to nutritious food.

The program also positively impacts the community. By donating, individuals can contribute to the well-being of their local communities. Nourishing Neighbors works with local nonprofits and community organizations to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most. This localized approach helps build stronger, more resilient communities. The program especially focuses on empowering children and families. Ensuring that children have access to nutritious food is essential for their growth and development. Programs funded by Nourishing Neighbors, such as school breakfast and summer meal programs, help children thrive academically and physically.

Lastly, supporting Nourishing Neighbors encourages volunteerism. Donations also support volunteer initiatives, encouraging community members to get involved and make a difference. The program’s Million Hour Volunteer Rally, for example, mobilizes volunteers to support local nonprofits and neighbors in need.

The Nourishing Neighbors program is a vital initiative in the fight against food insecurity. By addressing both immediate needs and long-term solutions, it plays a crucial role in ensuring that everyone has access to nourishing food. Donations to this program not only provide essential support to those in need but also help build stronger, more resilient communities. As we continue to face the challenges of food insecurity, programs like Nourishing Neighbors remind us of the power of collective action and the importance of supporting our neighbors.

The Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP), located in Seattle, steps into the realm of folklore and fantasy with its upcoming exhibition, “Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form.”

In collaboration with the renowned Barbican Centre in London, the limited-time exhibition journeys through the rich, multifaceted world of Asian visual storytelling, paying homage to its historical roots while exploring new age digital innovations.

Visitors will discover a myriad of key creators, characters, and beloved publications — ranging from rare Japanese woodblock prints and traditional graphic narratives to Hindu kavaads and iconic Japanese manga. The exhibition showcases over 400 works from around the globe, making it the continent’s largest-ever collection of original Asian comics.

“There is no single Asia, but rather a diverse range of countries, each with its own network of historical, political, spiritual, and artistic cultures,” Barbican Curator Paul Gravett, who collaborated with over twenty international advisors on the exhibition, shared. “The term ‘manga’ refers not to a singular style, but to an almost infinitely variable art form, covering subjects that range from children’s stories to adult-only fantasies.”

“Asian Comics” unfolds across six dynamic sections, each offering a unique lens on the diverse and ever-evolving landscape of Asian comics:

‘Mapping Asian Comics: A Journey Through Graphic Realms’

Welcoming guests into the world of vibrant graphic storytelling, “Mapping Asian Comics: A Journey Through Graphic Realms” sets the scene with a rich tapestry of historic techniques, themes and visual styles.

Moving beyond the familiar domain of Japanese manga, this section celebrates the boundless creativity and cultural depth of graphic art from across Asia — ranging from the intricate illustrations of India to the dynamic narratives of the Philippines, Indonesia and China.

More on MyNW: Country star Morgan Wallen has 2 Seattle shows on his ‘I’m the Problem’ tour

‘Fables and Folklore: Reimagining Myths and Legends’

Folklore deeply depends on those who are telling the story. This section takes a closer look at how authors have preserved the profound history of Asian comics while breathing new life into ancient myths and legends.

Over the years, comics have transformed into a powerful gateway, introducing many to the foundational ideas and legendary figures of Hinduism, Buddhism and other spiritual traditions of the region.

Graphic art is not just a relic of the past but rather a living, breathing force that continues to captivate, adapt and shape the modern world.

‘Recreating the Past: A Graphic History’

Comics continue to provide an open platform for survivors and witnesses. From propaganda and critique to storytelling and commentary, these timeless tales shed light on overlooked histories and unheard voices, adding diversity and dimension to events and stories that are often ignored by mainstream media.

‘Stories and Storytellers: Artist Biographies’

Here, the museum delves into the lives of the creators who have shaped the world of comics, exploring their journeys, creative processes, and personal stories.

From the masterminds behind iconic franchises to independent visionaries, “Stories and Storytellers: Artist Biographies” surveys the spectrum of Asian comics, highlighting the innovators who have and continue to mold the medium.

Other news: Seattle’s culinary scene shines as James Beard Awards semifinalists announced

‘Censorship and Sensibility: Freedom and Expression’

“Censorship and Sensibility: Freedom of Expression” illuminates the complexities of politics, violence, sexuality and other adult content across the genre.

While many complex or controversial works have been banned or destroyed in their country of origin, they are often celebrated as invaluable artifacts of creative expression and political freedom elsewhere. Please note, this section is 18 years and up and may contain instances of nudity and violence.

‘Multimedia: Beyond the Printed Page’

Finally, the last section, “Multimedia: Beyond the Printed Page,” reflects on how the influences of graphic narratives are infused in other mediums, including television, fashion, cinema and more.

Fandom and community are the pillars of Asian comics, and fans continue to recreate the stories and characters through cosplay, campaigns and more.

Inside the space, the museum encourages guests to explore various interactive opportunities, including a reading station filled with manga anthologies, a replica of Takashi Fukutani’s studio and a motion-capture installation that invites visitors to control a building-sized construction robot, reminiscent of the renowned mecha robots from 1980s and 1990s manga.

Other display moments highlight anime and manga-inspired cosplays by local artists, such as Kitkatwombat, creator of the “Yukari Hayasaka” cosplay from “Paradise Kiss,” and Stephanie Piper, creator of the “Oscar François de Jarjaye” cosplay from “The Rose of Versailles.”

For our music fans, there will be a broadcast performance of Hatsune Miku — a virtual pop star who began as a piece of vocal synthesizer software but has since transformed into a multimedia phenomenon, appearing in manga, anime and as an animated hologram.

“Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form” will be open at MOPOP from March 8, 2025, through January 4, 2026. Those interested can purchase tickets online now and be among the first to experience this incredible new exhibition.

The exhibition was curated and organized by the Barbican Immersive. The City of London Corporation is the owner, founder and principal funder of the Barbican Centre.

Billings Middle School’s curriculum is distinctively centered on social justice, preparing students to be the leaders of tomorrow. This commitment to equitable education is evident in every classroom and activity, aiming to empower young minds to make a meaningful impact in the world.

A cornerstone of the Billings experience is the daily Advisory Program. Here, students are grouped into small, supportive communities, each guided by a caring advisor. This personalized attention ensures that every student is known, supported and championed in their academic and personal pursuits.

Billings stands out with its hands-on, dynamic learning approach. Grounded in the latest neuroscience research, the school’s curriculum goes beyond traditional grade-level expectations. Students engage in a variety of immersive activities, from conducting field experiments to simulating real-world scenarios, making learning both exciting and effective.

Billings Middle School facilitates real-world experiences

One of the unique aspects of Billings is its expeditionary trips. These adventures take students out of the classroom and into the real world, exploring local ecosystems, historical sites and diverse communities. Such experiences deepen their understanding and allow them to apply their knowledge in practical, impactful ways.

Founded in 1979, Billings has a long-standing reputation for excellence. Today, the school blends academic rigor with a rich array of arts and athletics programs, ensuring a well-rounded education.

The vibrant community at Billings is built on core values like individuality, inclusivity, exploration and social justice. This supportive atmosphere fosters not just academic success, but also personal growth, critical thinking, and a love of learning. Parents and guardians play a crucial role, actively engaging and investing in their children’s educational journeys.

Billings is a leader in expeditionary education, seamlessly integrating experiential learning with project-based pedagogies. The result is a comprehensive, child-centered program that nurtures social, emotional and academic growth. Through a social justice lens, Billings tackles systemic inequities, encouraging students to engage in self-expression and critical thinking.

Accredited by the Washington State Board of Education and affiliated with several prestigious associations, including the National Association of Independent Schools, Billings upholds the highest standards of educational quality and accountability.
